One of the main things I hope this video illustrates is that Liam is a victim. The exposure to drugs while he was developing caused his brain to become malformed. As a result, he now struggles with anger and impulse control. Children with ODD are often labeled as "bad" children, but it is much more complex than that. Also, I just want to point out that it is entirely possible for a child to be diagnosed with ODD without exposure to drugs in utero.

I've had a kid with ODD in one of my jobs, and theirs was due to severe abuse. One of the sweetest kids I've ever met, SUPER self aware, and they were working SO hard to grow from their past. The fact that Liam said "if I could find a human friend" broke my heart. He seems like a very sweet, smart child, and he's very well spoken. I hope he finds some wonderful friends soon.

Im not completely sure of what they mean but from my own research and experience that a lot of the time ODD is used by parents to neglect their own place in their child’s behavior and emotional responses. For me it was used as a way to discredit my questioning and concerns about my education or my autistic meltdowns and just being defiant or just me “discrediting authority”. A lot of people with autism and adhd disagree with the diagnosis in general but i think it just needs to be diagnosed less frequently because its obviously a thing that people deal with on a Neurological level but it also agree that its very often sed as a way to silence neurodivergent voices. I hope this gives some insight but please let be know if I’m misunderstanding

Totally relatable! I understand her completely. I have experienced that with my own child. In fact, I was told one time that my child was one of the hardest children her therapist had ever had to work with. Her therapist was supportive and at least fought for us to get the help we needed when my child was a teen. Unfortunately, he kept getting doors slammed in his face, figuratively, too.

It's funny to hear him talk, the way he reasons and converses, and what he talks about because I was on opiates as a teenager till late 20s, and I have lot of those exact same problems and I did not have them before I was on oxycontin/Dilaudid/fentanyl. Basically even if you're smart enough to learn something your brain gets like, taxed, just completely gives up at times and no amount of motivation will fix it, you just have to wait. Like I can do multivariable calculus but I can be in a class, and I'll feel it coming on, where suddenly my brain is not doing anything useful. I can't even do a derivative. I can't remember the law of sines (sina/a = sin/b). I can't factor. I don't know what i^2 is. Can't do multiplication without a calculator. I made it through some grad school by coming up with tricks to not have to know everything. But over time subjects like that build into themselves too much, and so you need to know all of it simultaneously, and it should be easy to remember, in order to do the simplest problem in any class. You can miss kind of a day of something like multivariable calculus and catch up on a day when your brain is working, but that's not true for something like abstract algebra. At the higher levels having a barrier like that is damning.

I sadly understand this boys sense of humor. He uses the horrible things he went through as a joke to help take back the power he felt he lost at a very young age. My mom was never a drug user when she was pregnant, but my father was an addict. I lost him a few years after I was born. I use the trauma and pain I had as jokes to make myself feel better about what happened. One day this boy will find a good group of friends who understands and supports the jokes because they know it’s not it ever be harmful.

Do you not slow down when you see a cop in traffic in hopes that he doesn’t catch you going 10 over and then immediately speed up when you’ve passed him? Most of us abide by the rules when it’s convenient to keep us out of trouble but would break them if they stood between us and something that really matters, again we see that everyday. Have you every analyzed what rules are and what it means to have rules? Who comes up with the rules? In our case it would be a governing body, what exactly qualifies them above anyone else to determine what can or can’t be done in life? How egotistical do we have to be as humans to sincerely believe we can make rules that tell people how they have to live? When you look at the wonder that is life and existence how on earth do you get convinced that rules that are man made get to govern any of how this works? Following rules simply implies that it is ok to have someone else’s view imposed upon you and that you have to fall in line with that, I don’t need there to be a law to say that I shouldn’t harm someone because I understand that on my own and can govern myself accordingly. Nobody needs a law to tell them they should or shouldn’t do something because we already possess that ability to determine those things naturally, if you are unable to see right from wrong on your own then it’s time for some introspection

I have Pathological Demand Avoidance (a profile of autism, similar to ODD) and I can def relate. I think a lot of times people think that we break the rules because we want to hurt other peoples' feelings, but it's mostly just taking back what little power we have. People also assume the worst from us, and when you're treated like a bad person for trying your hardest, then it feels like there's no point in trying. What I really needed growing up was someone to talk to me as an equal, and be willing to listen. Liam's mom is doing a great job, and I hope they find the support system they need soon.

Definitely over whelmed and is worried about his future. She feels alone in this. She is trying her best but the village is no were to be found. This is a good example how messed up our society is and why we have so many shootings and homeless. People just look the other way when they are children then when they become adults the village is still no were to be found. There is a lot of good in this world and this woman is one of the good. Adopting this child knowing he would have some special needs. I have a lot of respect for her. Hopefully she can keep him on a straight path. I felt so sorry for her when she said that, it's true, my aunt has a disabled child and she's so alone, she lives in a different country so all we can do is help her financially but it's not fair, I hope to get them legally into the states so she can get much deserved help and my cousin can get the therapy he needs. Liam, I was not born with opioids in my system, but I share every single one of your diagnoses and from what I could see in this interview, you act *exactly* like how I did when I was a kid. A big part of what makes life with these disorders so tough - at least for me - is that a lot of people who don't think and act like we do can be so dismissive of anyone who acts even a little 'different'. I want you to know that there are lots of people like you out there; as well as people who aren't like you, but who will find you all the more charming and interesting to be around because of it. Liam's mom could also meet other parents on line. There are many of us with children who share at least some of Liam's challenges! It would be good for her to speak with other parents who've found ways to avoid some of the conflict. Sometimes, with some children, just asking a different way can be all that's necessary. Sometimes, to-do lists ('star charts', for example) with lists of tasks that need to be done - in conjunction with some sort of reward (a game together, an offer to talk about Roblox (or another preferred topic) - can be helpful. Sometimes they're not. Sharing both, the useful and the less-so, can be helpful to any parent - especially a parent of an intelligent, opinionated child like Liam (and like my son as well).

A child with normal brain development can improve behavioral issues over time. Liam has a whole different set of challenges, including Autism which does not change over time. He will always be different, I agree he is highly intelligent. He’s very witty too. I hope he continues to get the support he needs and finds a way to thrive in life. I think it’s important not bypass his challenges while holding him in high regard.

He will always be ODD, ASD and ADHD. It will not change. He can learn to mask and to some extent cope. It is a huge mountain to climb and it is a never ending task. So it is like dishwashing, you will never get to a point where you can let it go and just not do it without things crumbling.

Yeah probably someone whos witty might help in therapy (like with the shirt thing she says "I bet you can't get your shirt on in 5 minutes" or "Wear your shoes first" "that doesnt make sense I'll wear my socks first". I dont think he has a motive besides wanting control, and doing that sort of thinking might guide him towards certain behaviors but it is hard to avoid being manipulative/not be manipulative towards him since it feels like the biggest thing that may affect him in the future

Congrats to the mom BUT (!!!) that ODD have a lot to do with her being a single mom and he just didn't see her as an authority figure because she may be afraid of educating him the real way thinking in his past! This should be changed immediately if they want to save this child's future. All of his adulthood depends on that. He doesn't follow orders because he never had been "punished" the right way nor had dealt with the real consequence of his actions. This excessive protection can led to him ending up in an mental institution to save him from prison!

Also, not all neighborhoods are suitable for play outside (I don't know what their neighborhood is like, but a place off a busy street with no sidewalks, for example, isn't the kind of place in which children should be allowed to play outside without adult (or older responsible teen) supervision).

I was a little like Liam. I had a head injury as a baby and I’ve got severe ADHD on top of that. I had a disdain for rules as well. I benefitted MASSIVELY from after school art classes with a very understanding art teacher who let me paint whatever I wanted. Art is for rule-breakers and he let me learn on my own while sneaking some guidance in there. If it weren’t for my dirt bike and my art classes I’m pretty sure I would’ve ended up in jail. I am now an art teacher hoping to impact kids how my precious art teacher did for me. Liam is SMART and funny. Once he finds an outlet or two I think he will figure it out.

Although exhausting, I can tell Liam's mother whole-heartedly loves him the way he is. She has accepted that this is Liam. Given how many different diagnoses he has, he is incredibly well balanced and well articulate. Sheesh. This situation is beyond rough. This lady’s continuous stress level is through the roof. Her eyes dart when there’s a loud noise, she’s jumpy, she’s always on alert and on the lookout. Imagine what that does to your body and hormones. I know the kid has a lot of issues and as a perent its definitly good to differienciate these issues to bad behavior but i think beeing a little strict might go a long way. I can only admire this woman for beeing able to go through this everyday but when it comes to the emotional manipulation i think its important to enforce rules at these moments even if the kid is disabled. Its the same with people justifying devious actions from autistic people. Strictness goes a long way. You dont need to be as hard on the kid as you would a normal kid but even with all those disorders you can understand if you arendoing something bad. For example when he threw her food away, he knew his mom would get upset about that so he definitly understands when ever he is doing something he is not supposed to do and he keeps doing it because he gets away with it

you can see that while Liam has been diagnosed with a lot of things, he is also incredibly smart! The fact that he was on Chat GPT in this interview and wanting to save up his allowance to buy the Meta VR. He has insane interest in technology and I see a great career in that field for him! I think with time, he can learn to regulate and manage his emotions. He is also lucky to have his mother. His mother is saving his life - don't think he knows it yet though. If Liam had the wrong caregiver he could easily become his worst self but with the caring guidance and love she brings, I can see him going to a much better future :)

ODD was nearly a breaking point for me to deal with. Finding patience and understanding is extremely difficult when raising a child with strong ODD. I was fortunate to have a good child psychologist which made a world of difference over the years. My child is now much lower on the ODD spectrum now. She had the self knowledge by around age 11 to realize the issues with ODD and she worked hard to understand it and learn to manage it. It could improve with professional support.

A similar issue occurs with people with down syndrome. If you baby them and do everything for them their entire life, they grow up to be extremely dependent and unable to do anything for themselves. On the opposite end, if you raise them as a "normal" person (with some exceptions due to mental and physical limitations) they'll grow into very independent and capable people. I've seen both sides many times, the parents mean well and are doing their best, but their parenting has a crucial effect on how their child turns out.

I’m honestly really disappointed in this video. Most of it was talking about how difficult Liam is and how hard it is to be around him, IN FRONT OF HIM. From this video I can already tell that Liam has so many interesting things to say, he’s smart, he’s funny, he has a great imagination, he’s very technologically gifted. Are these disabled kids only deserving of praise and friendship if they’re easy to get along with? This mother needs and deserves help and support. This must be exhausting emotionally and physically. I pray that she gets the professional help she needs to help her son. It is hard to navigate the broken healthcare system. Without help, things may just get tougher for her and her son. Liam will struggle with the effects of his birth. He is very intelligent. I am an adult with ADHD, bipolar, OCD and a history of oppositional defiance. This is due to genetics and neglect. I was bullied a lot for being different. My first real friend was in 5th grade which helped me socialize better. But it has been a long road. I personally relate to Liam. I hope he knows that he will find the right people someday if he remains open to new possibilities. I now try to use my defiant nature for good such as standing up for others. Exaclty. He tries. I think him saying "no, I'll put my shirt on first" when being told to put his pants on is his way of working around the problem. He knows he needs to get dressed and he wants to do it in order to go on with his day, but his brain tells him that if he does it the way he was told, he's losing the interaction somehow. So he'll "put his shirt on first" so his mom doesn't "win" but they can still get through their morning routine. It's hard, but I think they're both really trying. I hope they get the support they need, 'cause, as she said, it can get more dangerous as he gets older if it's not handled properly

I really relate to this. I also have ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression and a few similar disorders that have turned out to be largely genetic and/or treatment resistant. I’m now 20 and in college, studying to be a teacher. I never thought I’d get this far, until I got the chance to meet other people like me and realized that there were people who really understood me and that I could be successful like them, despite my struggles. Liam, you’re not the only one. I would have loved to have a friend like you as a kid (my friends at your age were stuffed animals). The world can really suck sometimes, but we will make it better. And I know you’ll find more people like you someday too, who really understand what it’s like. In the meantime, I’m glad you’ve got Larry and your family! I’m cheering for you :) And mom, you’re incredible. Thank you for trying to understand even if you can’t experience what it’s like.
