I'm curious to see if this holds up... I was watching and saying over and over, you are getting rid of a lot of high level corrosion protection, plating/anodizing, etc. and replacing it with paint. Just wondering how that will look in two years...
@oldshovel4 жыл бұрын
I am interested also with the cranks. I’m learning how to anodize are home so I may be doing that in the future on these. The other cranks I’ve done this on have held up ok though. For the chainrings they were just painted before. The spray.bike paint may or may not be as durable as the original but it’s hard to say; I guess I’ll find out.

I can't imagine it'd last long on the actual teeth but I think it'd last for quite some time on the face on the chainring, that area tends to get quite dirty though so you'd probably have to clean it quite regularly to still be able to notice the gold colour

So I've recently started working on a few bikes myself to help with my quarantine time. They're nothing particularly great or amazing but I have a Gary Fisher Big Sur (1997 I think) that I snagged from a dumpster at an apartment complex I used to live at, a Giant Rincon (also 1997ish I think) that I fished out of the Charles River with a magnet, and my Mongoose Expert Pro from when I was a kid. These videos plus RJ The Bike guy have been great so I appreciate them. Would you maybe have any suggestions for someone that doesn't have a full on buffing wheel or gear to sandblast with those old cranks/sprockets?
@oldshovel4 жыл бұрын
Sanding up to 3000 grit can do a lot but you won’t get a mirror polish without some sort of buffer. Using a car buffer and polishing compound may do it or a small buffing attachment on a drill or drumel tool.

Normal spray paint sprays wet, which means it's hard to use well and tends to run, whereas spray.bike sprays dry like a powder (some kind of wizardry), meaning that it's a lot easier to use, and makes far less mess. Durability wise I'm not sure there's much difference, although I guess that depends on how many coats you use
