HOW TO Delete your Future Shock:
• HOW TO: Install Future...
Can't figure out how to remove the blank top cap on your Future Shock 1.5 equipped Specialized Diverge, Roubaix, Ruby, or Sirrus? Need a run down on how to swap boost springs? Need to access the headset for service? I tried to cover all bases in this bike tech video on the new Specialized Future Shock 1.5 system.
Related:
How to adjust Future Shock stem height using spacers (standard headset spacers DO NOT work):
• Specialized Future Sho...
The Future Shock 1.5 system is an update to the original Future Shock debuted on the Specialized Roubaix in 2017. It comes standard on many of the new Specialized bikes including the 2021 Diverge in this video. Servicing the Future Shock 1.5 is slightly different than its predecessor and also a bit different than its damped counterpart, the Future Shock 2.0.
Support the channel and pick up some stickers (and Future Shock spacers).
Thanks!!
www.thebikesauce.com/
Also, if you damage your Future Shock top cap like I almost did, you can order a replacement with this part number:
support.specialized.com/home/...
One suggestion was to loosen the stem bolts and use the friction of the stem against the top cap to remove it. This method was unsuccessful for me, but worth a shot if you’re having trouble removing the top cap.
Comments / questions are always welcome!

You need to loosen the stem pinch bolts before trying to loosen the top cap if it feels really tight. Once you’ve done this, firm downward pressure with your thumbs normally enables you to gain enough friction to unscrew the cap without any damage.

Great video! To keep from marring the cap, loosen the stem pinch bolts and move the handlebars back and forth first, then unscrew the cap by hand. Once the cap is unscrewed, pull up on it to remove it as an O-ring on the small threaded shaft holds it in.

I am not a bike technician but have a good mechanical background. I agree that best not tighten the 'collar' without the shock in place, BUT, if you try and add pre-load by tightening the 2mm 'screws' against the race, the collar is only held by the small front locating screw, and all that happens is that as the 2mm pre-load screws are tightened against the race, the collar actually is forced up...you can actually measure this. Best is, (perhaps...views please), to do the adjustment with the shock in place and the collar tightened up. You can still access the 2mm set-screws and the 2.5mm locking screws. I really don't think that you can pre-load the head bearings unless the collar is secure. (Just my view, for others to comment...I am NOT saying this method is correct way...just the way that makes most sense to me. Many thanks for the very helpful videos.

Totally fair. It's a complicated system that adds a solid 350-400 grams. For this video, I totally stripped the system down and rebuilt it and, while it is complex, I haven't had any issues with it after the rebuild even after some gnarly chunk on a couple of rides. I agree that probably a standard headset and a Redshift stem might be a more robust system. Cheers!

Great video to explain Future Shock mechanicals. I see you have a Diverge. Do you think the bars damping and softer ride are worth the extra 400 gm on the Roubaix road bikes?
@TheBikeSauce
@TheBikeSauce 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Well I think that Specialized’s “smoother is faster” marketing slogan has a lot of validity in practice. In short, a smoother ride will experience less suspension losses and therefore be faster overall. Anything that can reduce the hysteretic losses will ultimately produce a more efficient bike and the future shock does that to a degree by absorbing vibrations in an undamped manner before they reach the rider (highly damped). The argument is that this benefit outweighs the weight penalty, which isn’t actually that significant. From experience, I do like the FS system. I don’t ride with power, but I can say that I’m no where near as fatigued as I used to be on my old Roubaix SL4 with no suspension. And that alone has been worth it
@peterho3299

Good video and much useful info. However I'd just like to point out that I think that tightening those preload bolts down without the FS cartridge installed and collar clamping bolt fully tightened is not a good idea. The only thing holding the collar onto the steerer at that point is that small locator bolt. The installation instructions show that tightening the preload bolts is the very last thing you do... after you've fitted the stem and everything.

I tested a Sirrus X 4.0 with future shock "small" spring, but didn't notice much shock absorption riding over cobblestone. Do you think that would be improved with one of the other springs? A guy at a shop said choosing the proper spring level is based on the cyclist's weight (e.g., lighter riders would go with small, and heavier riders large), implying I would feel even less assistance with the larger spring. I don't really know what this means now that I've seen your video, and you differentiate the springs as soft, medium and firm.

There are 3 springs available, but you can also remove all the springs entirely and rely on the cartridge spring. That would be the lightest option

I have few issues with my FS 1.0 on Roubaix 2018. First, it rattles when I drop the front wheel to the ground. I can't find the reason since the headset isn't loose. Second, the collar doesn't seem to need 3mm hey as there are two small (2.5&2mm I think) allen bolts that you first set tension with smaller one and then lock it down with bigger one. I feel like the black spring is too soft for me as it sags 1cm or so when riding the bike and it's easy to bottom out so it doesn't seem very supportive when hitting road imperfections. Above all I'm annoyed with the rattle issue which rears it's ugly head when riding gritty surfaces such as cobbles or stones plates. I don't think the issue is with FS because I got new replacement since the original had some issues. Shop guys can't help much and Creo they have in the shop with FS 1.5 doesn't seem to exhibit such issues.
@TheBikeSauce
@TheBikeSauce 3 жыл бұрын
The rattling is interesting. I get the sound of the internal spring 'popping' but it's not really a rattle. Unfortunately, the internals aren't serviceable. Also, I believe that they went to a progressive spring on the 1.5 and 2.0. You might see if you can swap in a stiff boost spring from a 1.5 or 2.0 to prevent bottoming out.
@Jadrijasurf
@Jadrijasurf 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheBikeSauce I found the source of the rattle. It wasn't actually Future Shock, but Shimano RS505 levers. With handlebars removed it doesn't rattle when I drop the front wheel. On another note, how much travel are you getting? I read FS had 20mm travel but I'm only getting about 10mm and I've checked Specialized Turbo Creo at the shop with FS 1.5 and it's the same thing.

The main cartridge has a nominal spring in it. You can firm it up using one of the three additional springs. I use the medium weight helper spring and it’s pretty good. It’s based on preference. Also, the FS2.0 has a knob that incrementally adjusts the spring rate instead of 3 distinct choices

@TheBikeSauce

The official answer from Specialized is no; there is no cross compatibility between 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0. I have, however, read about a successful swap from 1.0 to 2.0, so perhaps it's possible. The biggest issue is that you can't just buy the 2.0 cartridge; it's only available for warranty replacements through authorized dealers.

Unless a person has specific wrist, elbow, shoulder, or neck issue, then I don't see the value (I have a buddy with some issues and it's great for him!). The 20mm of travel is a different experience than a supple frame alone. Comparing the Diverge with FS to say, the Ritchey Outback I test rode, the Diverge definitely has more front end compliance that no rigid frame can reproduce. My shoulders are far less fatigued after a ride on the Diverge when compared to other bikes. However, I agree that it's a lot of complexity to add the FS and not for everyone. I might suggest the Redshift stem on a rigid frame and call it a day.
