Great review as always Joe, but I often wonder about the overall need for specialized boxes like these... not discounting them... but like how often is the backing track playing any type of panned audio, in which case why not use something like a ltiblox (at 1/3 the price) and just run 1 cable.... or even 2 regular DIs. Not trying to be an ass... I love the tech, but is something like this super necessary?

Hi Adrian, It's definitely not a "must have" but it's a cool addition to my "handy to have" kit. I can think of several uses for it and yes the same can be accomplished with two other devices but this is an all-in-one solution for when a stereo input is needed and stereo output is required. I have a similar DI box by the same company called a ProAV D1 which is similar except it only has one mono output and it sums the stereo inputs. I use that all the time. That's a great little box.
No, a mic would connect straight into your mixing console. This is meant to convert a stereo, line level source, like an ipod, laptop, cd player, DVD player, etc, into a pair of mic level inputs on a conventional mixing board.
