One could allmost think one of the policemen is ex army. Standing to attention and saluting the Colour.

The only criticism I have is that the corps of drums beatings are too frequent. It’s kind of boring.

Surely this is all entertainment for the tourists. Hardly practical soldering. Lots of shouting and stomping of feet.

Tourist magnets are money magnets!

@ that has always been an argument. Yes all this pageantry is a magnet to foreign visitors. The question I ask is it right to tie up trained and presumably expensive soldiers in show biz ?

Purely ceremonial..a tourism attraction.

@ I am not arguing all these points. The bottom line is trained top of the line warriors are in acting roles at being tin soldiers.

One question: Where's the real military power to back up the display of marching and musical prowess? The U.S. Marine Corps has more personnel than the entire British military. Where are the U.K.'s aircraft carriers? Just two -- and oil-powered? Where are the cruisers, destroyers and frigates? And submarines? The few you have a high-quality warships? But the numbers are just not there. Where are the tanks? A few hundred? Where are the standing divisions? Is there an expeditionary force ready to deploy? Where are the jet fighters and bombers? Squadrons or just a few planes here and there? Where is the quantity that makes the quality actually powerful and sustainable in a real fight? As a retired U.S. Navy chief petty officer, I've always admired British precision marching and martial music (except for that crazy bugler mangling a the bugle call around 08:43. Huh?) and the individual quality of personnel and military equipment. What I find sad is that the British military continually gets cut and trimmed and sliced and amalgamated away. Hell... when the two new British carriers first went to sea, their aircraft components were fleshed out with U.S. Marine Corps flyers and aircraft. Frightening!

the money is needed for diversity and cultural enrichment. Nothin' left for defence.

You're evidently not aware of the relative sizes of the UK and USA. A much smaller country is likely to have a much smaller army, navy etc. I hope that helps.
