Showing the broken coastline at Oaro and north of Kaikoura from near Mangamaunu up to Half Moon Bay, Ohau Point and Paparoa Point
South Island, New Zealand
This video was filmed on 25th December 2016 and 1st January 2017
Please note!! We have just released a one year later video on the 4th of January 2017 showing the once broken coastline north of Kaikoura from near Mangamaunu, up to Half Moon Bay and Ohau Point. (South Island, New Zealand)
This new video shows the difference to the area, with the clearing of the massive slips, and the building of new roads and bridges. Filmed on the 25th of December 2017
Don't forget to look at our other videos! There are always new ones coming.

That welded rail sure held up well! A testament to the skill of the welders and engineers who built that railroad!

5:20 The sealed area on the far side of the road led to a track beside the creek, where visitors could walk a couple of hundred metres to a pool at the base of a waterfall and watch baby seals playing while their mothers were out at sea. This is part of the Ohau Point seal colony, that was destroyed by the earthquake, but the seals are back now. The road and railway line have been rebuilt and a large parking area provided where visitors can overlook the colony and seals resting on the rocks below. I don't know if the seal pups can still access the pool. Possibly not, as there are a lot of them on the rocks now. Parts the coastline, north of Kaikoura, were uplifted up the three metres and now grass grows where the waves once washed over the rocks. Rocks further out to sea have plimsol lines on them, well above the waterline, showing where they were submerged before the earthquake.

Expat who missed all this. As a surfer who regularly travelled to Mangamaunu and other places from Christchurch in the 1960's along this road, I'm amazed at the sheer destruction. Also just as amazing is having visited the area after most of the incredible restoration work had been done.......

1:19 I was on that road with my friend half an hour before the earthquake. I could of been trapped there away from my family for months. I'm praying to everyone that was seriously involved in the earthquake. 🙏 I live 1 hour away from here so I felt the earthquake really strong at my house. I hope everyone is OK

That's hard to say, because in some places there are some very big slips to remove and once that's done, the hillsides have to be stabilized to stop any further slips coming down. so that could take some time...... The Railway might take longer because the line has to be smooth, level and straight, unlike the road which can be a bit bumpy for a while just to get traffic rolling again

Clementine .Thanks. Over in March for a self guided 16 day ride with three mates. 4500 klm of NZ South Island bliss. The east coast was going to be part of the route, but clearly that may change. If you gets a heads up on when, a message would be appreciated. Cheers, Peter.

Hi there. Great footage! Any chance you recorded this in 4K? thanks Sid
@clementine2681
@clementine2681 7 жыл бұрын
No, We did it in 1080, Because 4k cannot handle the fast movement with its slow framerate This was filmed using 60 frames, whereupon 4k only goes as high as 30 frames, 4k is alright when there is not fast movement.

@@muzzamoose I'm sorry that you have missed the point of our short video. It was only made to show the earthquake damaged before any repairs were made to the road and railway line. This video is the only clear record that shows what happened in this location. As for the commentary, the description above tells one where it is.
