Autorotation is a state of flight in which the main rotor system of a helicopter or other rotary-wing aircraft turns by the action of air moving up through the rotor, as with an autogyro, rather than engine power driving the rotor. The term autorotation dates to a period of early helicopter development between 1915 and 1920, and refers to the rotors turning without the engine. It is analogous to the gliding flight of a fixed-wing aircraft. (Font Wikipedia)

I was attached to 162 from 464. Good times. I don't think he saved anything though. I used to watch autorotations for hours, and everything sounded like it was running and working fine. I think he was training or showing off and botched a practice run. It also seems pretty damn convenient he had some sort of failure and ate s**t at the airport. It could be sheer coincidence and he could have lost a an input driveshaft or something, but I doubt it.

Correct Video Title: "Spectacular! Helicopter crashes while attempting autorotation" Here is what _actually_ happened: The pilot was practicing auto-rotations, (i.e. "pretend" the engine had failed by dropping the throttle) with intent to either perform a soft, controlled landing, or increase throttle and lift back up into the air (power recovery). As the helicopter was descending too rapidly, he was unable to perform either of those options and, instead crashed onto the runway. So, in short, he messed up big time.

I’ve done several auto’s and experience a full down with a 10k plus hour IP next to me, I wouldn’t call it beautiful. They’re alive and that’s a beautiful thing but to split the skids like that is a hard landing and then some, the pilot should have had enough air speed and positive rotor RPM to pull back on the cyclic and generate enough lift before doing a full down, if this was a training 180 auto then it should have been conducted as a power on recovery with no touch down to begin with. Looks to me like an oh shit decent possible communication error or not enough altitude or potentially something went wrong with the engine and rotor RPM’s causing decay during their decent, in any case they are alive and that’s a blessing to live to tell the story.
@Kevin-lo1le
@Kevin-lo1le 3 жыл бұрын
I agree for the most part but if you look closely the aircraft appears to be full with people, thus harder to flare successfully but I do agree he had buckets of airspeed and should have flared earlier and harder..
@hubster69jdj
@hubster69jdj Жыл бұрын
actually having all that positive rotor RPM would make solely pulling the cyclic back detrimental due to the increase in air flow under the blades causing them to accelerate. If he flared earlier it might cause structural damage to the point of losing a blade IF he did not compensate with a large amount of collective. The best way to get lift out of that rotational energy would be to pull collective, since it controls blade pitch not just scheduling of fuel to the engine, then flare while continuing to pull collective until going skids level and cushioning with the rest of the collective (blade pitch) remaining before stalling the blades. But I'm just a cat. Edit: I now see that the helicopter is full of shit, and you can see that the blades are coning as it comes in. In that case it looks like the pilot did pull collective and they just G-loaded all the way through to the ground.
@samgab
@samgab 3 ай бұрын
Yep, that's what I was thinking too. More flare would have been a softer, less damaging landing, with far less forward motion.

Once you are good enough, you start practicing autorotations to the ground. Either this was a real emergency that just happened to be over an airport and while being filmed, or it was a practice attempt. Regardless, the 180 degree turn was not completed early enough and the flare was slightly too late. Pretty impressive save though, because at 30 feet it sure looks like they are going to crater really hard.

Autorotation is a state of flight in which the main rotor system of a helicopter or other rotary-wing aircraft turns by the action of air moving up through the rotor, as with an autogyro, rather than engine power driving the rotor.[1][2][3] The term autorotation dates to a period of early helicopter development between 1915 and 1920, and refers to the rotors turning without the engine.[4] It is analogous to the gliding flight of a fixed-wing aircraft. Autorotation has also evolved to be used by certain trees as a means of disseminating their seeds further. The most common use of autorotation in helicopters is to safely land the aircraft in the event of an engine failure or tail-rotor failure. It is a common emergency procedure taught to helicopter pilots as part of their training. In normal powered helicopter flight, air is drawn into the main rotor system from above and exhausted downward, but during autorotation, air moves up into the rotor system from below as the helicopter descends. Autorotation is permitted mechanically because of both a freewheeling unit, which allows the main rotor to continue turning even if the engine is not running, as well as aerodynamic forces of relative wind maintaining rotor speed. It is the means by which a helicopter can land safely in the event of complete engine failure. Consequently, all single-engine helicopters must demonstrate this capability to obtain a type certificate.[5] The longest autorotation in history was performed by Jean Boulet in 1972 when he reached a record altitude of 12,440 m (40,814 ft) in an Aérospatiale SA 315B Lama. Because of a −63 °C (−81.4 °F) temperature at that altitude, as soon as he reduced power, the engine flamed out and could not be restarted. By using autorotation he was able to land the aircraft safely.[6]

And considerably worse ! Said as a private pilot but not a Helicopter rated one. Definitely a cool heads up. Skids helped with not a true vertical set down. I was in an Assault Helicopter company back in 1973 in Germany. Our CO. did an practice auto rotate and splayed the skids out when he set down so hard. And the UH-1 had to be towed back to the hanger.

They jokingly say that any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. But, as a retired military flight instructor who has performed this maneuver hundreds of times in training and once with an actual engine failure, I can assure you this was not exceptional airmanship. This was a practice maneuver, not an actual engine failure, as evidenced by the facts that the rotor was at full rpm after landing and this landing was initiated on the downwind leg while parallel to a nice big runway. On a proficiency flight evaluation, this would have received a failing grade for sure. The instructor also failed to intercede and save the aircraft from damage so there is plenty of room for criticism all around.
