The primary gear (6:55) in the middle is probably the one used for drive purposes and all three gears are most likely used with a transmission - which would have been above the axle and you can see is now removed. Last I read (a few years ago) Panama was dredging where needed to widen the waterway and running into the same problems as previous - movement and inflow of dirt from the edges being excavated. Thank you for the information regarding the gears.. They have now opened a new canal (parallel to the one that you saw in this video) for larger, wider ships to go through..

No, the new locks cannot be visited but could be seen in the distance..
