Excellent comparison! A little clarification: the numbers on the plate aren't the bands' central frequencies, but their extremes. That's why they are between the faders! Hope this makes sense, cheers!

I bought the 296t because I've always wanted a Buchla 200 system and TTA allowed for that dream to slowly come true (259t and 285t are coming!). I have to say that the Fumana would be my choice, mainly because of the features but also that low end(!)...having said all that, I do with there was a way to switch the program outs on the 296t to take account of the sliders, but yeah..that was not available on the OG 296 and that's that I guess. I do love the sound of the 296t...but the Fumana is the one for me from this test. I didn't like the sound of Verbos. Brutal sounds I get from processing the 296t...but yeah, Bark is not my cup of tea. Nice test!...I think...I have Fumana GAS now....oh well...back to my lovely 296t :)

Thanks for that excellent comparison of the Sput and 296t. I bought the Sputnik last year. And this confirms why. It just sounds so much better than the rest. Alive, rich, and very "modular" sounding. I too like the visual aspect on the fader LEDs. I like the longer fader throws on the 296t though. If you take out the increase in amplitude above 0db, the faders on the 296t are about twice as long. As these modules are perhaps more for studio work as opposed to performative, it's nice to have the greater resolution.

well done wrangling all these together! i do slightly prefer the tta 296 sound, but i think i'll stick with my sputnik as some of the features make it capable of a bit more sonic weirdness. spectral energy transfer is fun to nerd out on! one other small tip: the envelope follower duration on the sputnik does actually have a minor impact on the sound, so there's some subtle tweakability there too!

Where does the Moog Spectavox fit into this???
@Stazma8 ай бұрын
I have to try it to say but it’s probably a good addition to this spectral processor family. It probably goes a little less far on the envelope follower side, but you get variable frequency !
@tihinter2 ай бұрын
@@Stazma Moog Spectravox is more like a fixed tonal order of resonant bandpasses in 4 octaves and the 4 fifths in between, that can be transposed by the knob and via CV. Having it on my table as we speak. But it really sounds great, too! And the inbuilt OSC (which can go far below 1Hz and up beyond 30k and tracks very well) and LFO (which even can go up to 600Hz, but has mediocre V/Oct tracking) contributes a lot to its possibilities. Sadly it is mono and lacks those even and odd outs! But it can ping beautifully. And it can do crazy Filter-FM. And I really miss those sliders from the first prerelease DIY version of it. Knobs without knobheads for the bandpass levels? Not the most user friendly idea.

Thanks for such a detailed comparison. I am thinking of getting the Sputnik or furmana. I only had a deep look at the Sputnik and did not realise the others did not use the faders for the program out. That probably rules out furmana as it’s to clean sounding. If you could turn down some of the bands on the vocoder it would be amazing. I need weirdness in my life :)

I'd love to hear someone try Moog-Murf type rhythmic sequencing on one of these filter banks-- I've yet to see any. I think Murf uses 8 or more outputs from a Shift Register (like Turing Machine/Doepfer SOU random register outputs) into 8 or more separate band CV inputs. This should let you sequence repeating patterns of multiple filters, rather than just shifting overall spectral tilt with one CV. Pretty sure this is how the Murf works, with a shift register.
@Stazma2 ай бұрын
I can try something out one of these days. You cna go much furhter with these kind of things than with a Murf with the indiviual band control but it lack the immediacy of that classic Moogerfooger (I have one so I know hahaha, I need to do a video about it one day too).
@ghostexits2 ай бұрын
@@Stazma for sure, these spectral banks are way more versatile than Murf-- but the Murf still does something pretty unique, not trivial to reproduce. Each band on the Murf gets "sequenced" up and down independently, and all at the same time. It would be cool to figure out this effect on the 296. you could get 8 sequences with shift reg, but maybe also needs simple env on each band (?)

Salut Stazma.
@Stazma6 ай бұрын

Well that didn't stop me GASing after the Fumana. Although in some parts it does sound a bit smooth than is really my tasting. Almost wanting both a Fumana plus a Sputnik now.... But overall very informative, thank you.

The frequencies written on fumana's panel are the corner frequencies of the bands. The center frequency sits in between the corners, that's what you want to compare with. So for example the center frequency of the lowest band is 40 hz, not 15hz, and for the top band it's 13750hz, and of course the bands cover the range between the corners. Every video on fumana seems to get this wrong. Still great comparison though!

Good job on this demo, man. I know it’s hard to compare apples to apples since apples differ quite a lot amongst themselves. That is, even though these modules perform the function and may possibly sound very similar, finding the right settings for a fair comparison can be very daunting. Anyway, I’ve had the Fumana for a few years now. Never thought I’d buy another spectrum processor. I just bought the Sputnik because of this video. More specifically, because of the sounds starting on min 13:00, which are very close to sounds in Paddy Free’s Lali, kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3SmhaJ8jpyBl7csi=fVlEnPvnFZPP1PmR one of my favorite songs ever. am up to the part where you're talking about feeding a sawtooth into everything and I am GIDDY with excitement. early on, it's sounding like the sputnik resonates harder than the other units, but that could just have been it having different variables. hopefully these all get treated the same even though they all have different frequency bands. the verbos seems to be the one to get if you're looking for bold hairy tones. let's see, I mean HEAR. as of right now, sputnik and fumana are MY favorites. I expect fumana to own bass sounds as it has the lowest bands there and more of them. OH yeah! in the very first demo, the fumana is definitely warmer sounding. much warmer. sputnik's sharper resonances are a nice contrast. switching to it in the CV section turned the pulse into instant pink floyd. they're ALL good having distinct voices. the buchla is very organic sounding... a bit rounder and more polite, but more airy AWESOME demo! great variety of techniques and this video CLEARLY shows off each unit's personality. The sputnik sounds like an old russian tube vocoder... very ugly and different, but in a good way. I'm a big vocoder fan... more square wave than saw loving maybe though. buchla wins the vocoder SQ contest. fumana has less robot personality. I'm really liking the buchla now that I've seen it head to head. i went back... it's the juicy resonances in the 296t. Mr Buchla knew what he was doing. I'm liking the sputnik a bit less now because of just how JUICY the 296t is. 296t for the highs, and fumana for the bass thumbs up #182
