It really depends on the context. I often charge flat rate when working with bigger, reliable companies, that state their budget outright and finance me accordingly. However, when working with small timers, with clients of dubious background, etc, I make sure to charge for literally everything, and with no flat rate in sight. That is software engineering, but I think it is relevant.

I can absolutely confrim that it helps to pick up a 7 string guitar, if you have only played 6 strings. When I got my first 7 string, I ignored the lowest string entirely for like 2 weeks and learned to play all the 6 string stuff I knew on it first. It's actually harder than it sounds. At first you lose basically all orientation and have to relearn everything. Additionally, since the dimensions of the neck are different, you force your hand into a different position, more towards the "classical style". You have to do more of a stretch than before also. If you go back to a 6 string again, you will realise how much easier it feels to play now.

My step-dad ran a small demo studio in the 80s and early 90s, analog reel to reel, graduated from Trebas so he knew what he was doing. When I was 11 this metal band records, he gave them a flat rate and it took forever, solos were punched in like one bar at a time, drummer refused to believe he was slowing down near the end of one song, he kept saying the equipment was slowing it down on the recording, they argued constantly with each other over stuff that wasn't related to music, said really disturbing shit to me when they were hanging out between sessions ... then it was done and they wanted their demo free because it 'wasn't good enough' to pay for but needed something to sell at shows. I came home from school one day and the drummer came scampering out the basement window, he broke into the house and tried to break the padlock off the studio door.

Some notes about the 14' x 13' room. You have to really think about the reason square rooms are bad. If two or more of your room's dimensions are both divisible by the same number, then that's going to cause nodes and antinodes. Say for example you have a room that's 12' long x 6' wide x 8' high (Yes, height is just as important as the others, even though people always leave this measurement out). All three are divisible by 2', so you're going to have MAJOR issues with 563hz (wavelength of 2'). Height and length are both divisible by 4', which will cause issues with 282hz. Length and width are divisible by both 3' and 6', causing issues with 375hz and 188hz respectively. Not to mention 1' (1.126kHz, nearly every single room's nemesis), plus the normal standing waves associated with the actual raw dimensions. As you can see, this example room will have tons of issues (most of which are overtones of each other, so you'll most likely hear a pitched ringing with a slightly nasally tone in the room as a result) in lows, mids, and highs. Now I'm sure anyone can imagine, this will cause square rooms to have ALL KINDS of issues. I'm not going to bother doing math for an example here because it should just be a no-brainer at this point. So now to the dimensions in question, 14' x 13'. True, it is awfully close to being square, but since 13 is a prime number, you're actually gonna be pretty lucky with this one. Of course, you'll still get the 14' standing wave and the 13' standing wave ( 80hz and 87hz respectively if you're still curious), but you won't have to worry so much about your low-mids as the dimensions listed aren't really interacting with each other until that 1kHz interaction coming from 1' wavelengths. Like most rooms, you'll need bass traps and some basic foam. BUT! That assessment doesn't take into account the room's height. If it's an even number, then you'll absolutely need some low-mid treatment. If the height is 7', then you'll have interactions at 161hz, which is kinda approaching the low-mid area. Some bass traps might cover that range, but you may need to look at mid treatments depending on the specs of the particular treatment you're planning to use. If it's 9', well, then you just keep getting luckier, as 9' doesn't have any common factors larger than 1' with the others. The 9' standing wave is 125hz, definitely within the range of the bass traps you'll already need to be needing. Disclaimer: This knowledge comes from my genius OCD acoustician grandpa, and not any formal education. I have a feeling that he's said something about dimensions will causing standing waves for frequencies where the dimension is = 1/2 the wavelength, but being uncertain I didn't want to do that extra math and end up being wrong. The underlying principle still applies however, that you want your room's dimensions to have as few common factors with each other as possible. Being only 1' away from being square doesn't automatically make it bad, as long as there's very few common factors.
@johnboyle32975 жыл бұрын
Chris Thomas great explanation and if my memory serves spot on with the maths. I come from a generation that needed to understand these things, remember how to construct a vocal plate or build an acoustic chamber...today people just dial in a setting on an electric gismo with very little understanding of what it means. Technology killed the technician....again thanks for your post

@@johnboyle3297 Thanks man. I've tried to learn as much from my grandpa as I can, and he sure has a lot to teach. He designed one of the living rooms in his house from the ground up with acoustics in mind - floating floor, laminated glass windows, high vaulted ceiling, shape and dimensions, the works. Listening to music in that room on his ribbon speakers as a young musician was a completely mind blowing experience, and right away I wanted to learn as much as I could about how he designed it and why he made the decisions that he did. The knowledge he gave me was actually one of the biggest reasons I even got into audio. Like I said, there's no formal education, just a lot of memories of conversations with him. I'm glad I was able to still explain it correctly

Two other situations where valves/tubes still reign supreme are: - TV and Radio transmitter amplifiers - Valves can churn out much higher power than transistors can (these things are chruning out megawatts of power) - Miliary aircraft. I completely support the use of small solid-state amps, pedalboard-based amps, all of that. For example, I have mentioned before how our lead guitarist word-for-word copied Dave Mustaine. That means, if we ever play somewhere, he is going to be to hauling around a huge valve amp, a huge multi-effect switchboard, and the bulky rack unit that controls the switchboard. That is entirely too much. No one needs to haul around THAT much stuff. On the other side of the equation, the Victory Kraken pre-amp pedal can be mounted onto the board itself. In addition, the Orange Pedalbaby fits nicely under a Pedaltrain board, so I can haul it WITH the board, in the same case. This means if we ever play somewhere, I only have one case to haul around, as opposed to the other guy hauling three cases. I like the idea of focusing on convenience for touring. Haul around three heavy crates, or haul around one heavy crate? That is a no-brainer answer. The compact rig wins any day of the week of the year. As for the cabs? Unless you play festival-sized gigs, which I am betting you don't, then you don't need to haul around a huge 4x12. A 2x12 will serve you perfectly in most circumstances, and is MUCH easier to haul. Or, you could even further-condense your rig, and simply travel with a 2x12 combo. You don't need more than that. (However, if that combo is a valve amp, make sure it has an onboard attenuator. That way, you can still cook your valves, but play at a tolerable volume. Everyone everywhere you play will thank you.) The verdict at the end of the day? Go for a compact rig. You will thank me later.

A good tip for getting out of your comfort zone in terms of writing is to write on a different instrument. If you're a guitar player get a cheap midi keyboard. If you're a piano player get a cheap but playable guitar like harley benton or something. People tend to get trapped in boxes they feel comfortable with and that was a good way for me to break out of that. You don't need to get amazingly good at that instrument, just trial and error your way through the writing process with it and translate that to your main instrument.

Should I be saving some mixing presets from the first song--EQ or saturation plugins mostly? It's all digital stuff, so a lot of recording variables don't apply to me. At the end of the day, I want the songs to all sound cohesive together, but I don't want to become a slave to one setup in case one song needs something different than another. It's working, and I have happy clients I'm confident will pay full price for my services once I startup "officially", but if there is a better method, I'd love to grow correctly. Thanks, and go fu... nah I like you too much!

I had a friend over to do some recording. He said he wanted to put down a track with my Tele. So I said "I'll Go Turn On The Blues Jr. To Get The Tubes Nice And Warm". Then he points to the practice amp on my desk and says "Why Don't We Use The Fender Mustang ?". In my head I heard Glenn screaming "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME !?!?!?!?"

Speaking of affordable fun guitars: I recently found out the new contemporary series by Squier, and in particular the contemporary Jazzmaster with stop-tail Tune-o-matic bridge! (every JM player ever will tell you what a nightmare the floating clockwork contraption fender called a vibrato bridge is, both in string popping and re-assembly if opened) Suffice to say I threw my 400€ (on Thomann for Finland) faster than one says "assembly line work", and fuckin' hell if this thing isn't the most fun I've ever put money in for! And this is coming from a guy who just a short while ago swore to never ever touch active pickups for any reason. Good on Fender for at least every now and then coming up with something really fun that isn't a Tele or a Jazz Bass. Cheers once again from weather-schizophrenic Finland and haistahan vittu, Glennpai.

Nothing is going to replace tube amps, not because they're the best, but because they're different. If you want that sound, and not just 90% of that sound, you want tubes. The same thing goes for solid state amps. Nothing is going to replace those, because when guitarists want that sound, a tube amp won't do. If it's unique, and pleasing to the ear, it'll have a place in music

Hi Glenn. Do you know the band Blood Ceremony? I think they're from your neck off the wood. They have really managed to make wicked and eery music and still maintain the good old classic sound and feel of early 70's rock. And speaking of good old sound, my question is: what albums from the 60's, or even earlier does still fascinate and/or inspire you when it comes to production quality? And how fucking awesome is Eddie Kramer? PS: tell Alia I said hello! PPS: I hope I will have such majestic hair as you when I'm that age! Cheers from Northern-Norway!

Re the rhythym guitar thing. My band has two guitars, my self on rythym with a little bt f lead and the lead player in his own right. What we do when writing riffs is we pen two interlocking rhythym lines that are different but complimentry. Gives a far richer sound and when recording gives great options when it comes to panning

Another hack I found that kinda works for room treatment is moving blankets, they're like 5 bucks, and if you drape them across the corner it helps clean up the bass a bit. (this is just what I've found and I've only been doing this for 7 years now so not a "pro" suggestion but one I've found)

Those won’t do much for bass. Buy a bunch & stack them
@caseyrodriguez7375 жыл бұрын
@@SpectreSoundStudios i have a bunch and they're layered in the corners and it seemed like it did a decent amount for the bass for me, but like i said I've only been doing this for 7 years and i'm only 17 so i got a lot to learn.

Man! I bought 2 Samson CS mics years ago for $25 each on amazon. I didn't use them right away. I used them to mic up a couple of floor toms and also for a cab and I was blown away. I went back and they were $45. I waited for the price to drop again but instead, they were discontinued. :( I take such good care of them because they're PRECIOUS!

love your video's man, I just recently took a different job so I can work on my music and art stuff, and your videos are an incredible resource for developing some chops in my little demo setup and using reaper, I have been working on my roots rock solo stuff (usually some vocals, a couple acoustic tracks and harmonica) but I am starting up a new hardcore outfit soon, and I will be demoing us... after I get my acoustic treatment set up, anyway, keep up the good work, greetings from New Brunswick, thank you Glenn

Hey Glenn, I treated my room and get the same crappy mix just like Jarrod's comment spoke of, my hang ups seem to be in the high frequencies, plus the lows and the mids. Also in the low mids and the sub frequencies, as well as the presence... Seems one thing leads to another the more I spend on gear the crappier the mix.

Hey Glen, my question is about how to get clean wave forms in a DAW when recording guitar. Whenever I record guitars, I get nothing that looks like what I've seen on youtube videos. My wave forms just looks like paint rollers. They're not the clean peak and valley type wave form that I feel I should be seeing. I'm using a Torpedo Captor running to my Scarlett 8i6 via XLR to capture the preamp of my 5150 III, but after even after I add in the Two Notes WoS plugin, my guitar tones still sound like shit. I've tried everything from turning down the gain and volume of my amp to farting around with the EQ on both the amp and in my DAW (Cubase). The only way I've been able to get cleaner wave forms is by plugging my guitar directly into my interface and record the raw guitar signal. I know it's something that I'm doing wrong, but I haven't been able to figure out what it is. Any suggestions?

Gallien-Krueger comment about it not selling. I was upgrading my bass rig in 1988 and wanted to go with something other than Fender, Peavey or Ampeg. It came down to Gallien-Krueger or Hartke. I ended up buying a Hartke 350 simply because I didn't have faith in the "little" Gallien-Krueger. I still have my Hartke today, and still use it as my main rig. I wonder if other bassists felt the same way? And now times have changed to the point that smaller is better!

Question: is there a website or forum that has free plugins that are ranked and / or listed by category that are actually easy to use and don’t suck? Reaper does come with a lot of freebies which is great but looking for some others to compliment them...a really good reverb would be nice, different kinds of delays, anything that could apply to guitar, rhythm or lead. Or do you have any off the top of your head that you could recommend? I did purchase the PRS waves pack, and they’re great, but I’m used to using like Bias or Amplitube where there’s EVERYTHING built in, all diff kinds of reverbs, compressors, delays, other effects, etc, and with the PRS plugs only one of the amps has reverb, and it’s not exactly the kind that I’m looking for. Waves wants you to buy their own plugins I guess and just chain them together for that kinda thing.

PRIORITISE: I was in a metal band that was active and promising, played big shows and talking to labels. During rehearsal one of the guitarists would disappear constantly. I would always find him playing world of warcraft every time! And we would have to either wait for him or continue without him. Pretty lame considering I had a fulltime job and another active band so my time was limited. He eventually quit.

South America is a favorite area for all sorts of metal bands for touring. Check out the crowds at some of the live concerts on KZbin. Most bands desire to go to South America. I would recommend checking out a few bands you never heard of, or are curious about As far as metal goes: put any genre in front of the word Metal and it's probably a subgenre. The exception is blues metal, since blues is one of the sources of metal music

I highly recommend having your own PA system for gigging. Make sure you're getting paid accordingly for their use too. I help out a band out some. Don't ever expect clubs to be ready for your gear and don't expect anyone to know about it.

Hey Glenn, greetings from Finland! Anyways, I started a band and at some point I will be recording with the guys. But I'm terrified of the idea that with all the gear, especially pedals, all the sounds I'm used to getting through my own amp will be butchered by being plugged to a sound card and a DAW. I have bad experiences already from getting sub-par tone when recording on a budget with somone who won't mic an amp. Also, we're going for an egyptian vibe, any advice on how to get good traditional instruments etc. To a metal track?

@legoharry1005 жыл бұрын
A couple of things. 1) most solid state amps are usually Class D, which is less powerful than a Class A or Class AB amp and won’t produce full power unless it’s running a 4 ohm cab (most cabs are either 8 or 16). Colin Scott of Colin’s Sexy Guitars explains this in great detail on his Orange Pedal Baby review. 2) if you want to hear country metal, check out bands like Panopticon. Super awesome folk black metal that feature a banjo. A FUCKING BANJO.

The micro guitar rig is coming lets face it the older we get the gear doesn't get any lighter, the big boys will always have exactly what they want while the working bands will have what they need and smaller and smaller as they have to do almost all of their rigging.
