Oh man. What a big win on information! I finaly stopped messin' around in the studio a few months back and got really serious about my recordings. So now challenging myself to achieve quality mixes. Mid/Side EQing was a great breakthrough for me a couple of months ago, but man, I've been struggeling with the balances between mid and side. My room is treated and I have good near field monitors, but as you mentioned, "blinds spots galore" in my room. And I don't even dare to mix the entire track on my Headphones. Now, it's a bit stupid becasue I've had the spam plugin for quite some time but never understood what the yellow portion spectrum was supposed to be telling me. So after watching this video, I went back to my master bus and what did I find?... RED in the upper mids and RED reocurring again and again in the high end. Made some corrections to the side EQs of the e-guitars and pretty much stripped 80% of the lead vocals out of the sides at around 4k with a wider Q. The mix got so much air and the vocals just pushed up the middel. I even had to reduce the overall lead vocals by 2db cause they were just yelling at me. I love it! Lonely Rocker, well explained.. so that even I was able to get it . Thanks so much for talking... like directly to me. Oh yeah! Keep on Rockin'! All the best, Mick

I greatly appreciate this fantastic tutorial. It is remarkably well-explained and immensely valuable. Just out of curiosity, around 16:45, you mentioned to place side frequencies within the green (mid) frequency area. Is there a specific reason behind this recommendation? I did some experiments and indeed found that placing side frequencies within the mid area produces a more pleasing sound, but I am eager to hear your insights on this matter. By the way, I also watched your tutorial on mid/side frequencies, which was equally impressive.
@LonelyRocker Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your kind words! So glad it helped. Some small things I wish I could correct in this video like referring to a kick drum which typically is recorded in mono. I was using a stereo drum plugin so it had some rumble on the sides. Anyways. As far as the mud side balance this is the only Meyer I have found that does this. My guess is it is balance by keeping sides tucked within the range of the mids. Mids ate the sum of the sides so perhaps this is simply keeping those levels in check. If you listen to the mixes I referenced at the end of the video you get a sense of how that translates. Cheers!
@MMB3245 Жыл бұрын
@@LonelyRocker I appreciate your answer. It's logical that our attention should remain centered, with the side parts supporting and providing a sense of space. Additionally, I've been using Brainworx's Solo plugin to monitor the output from the center and sides. Your vids are awesome. Subbed!

What makes your video apart from the competition is, your narration which is honest and serious, you don't try to be funny or to show how much humor you have as so many guys here on KZbin which focus first to give the feeling how cool and funny they are, that is why to find something like you was difficult to find but now, I will check your videos because how you make them is exactly how it must be done. ! By the way, panning to the left and to the right is something that must be very common since music was first produced, however, checking how the mix is developing using MONO check, very often, those instruments panned too much, tend to disappear in MONO check, sometimes, not possible to listen at all while in MONO check, however, in STEREO, all seems to be fine, my question to you is if you understand what is my point, if you control your songs making a MONO check sound test to see if all instruments are there to be listened, please, elaborate on this if you think is valid what I am saying. Normally, I use Samplitude, and it has a great way to check the mixes using MONO check, for example, at times I fight a lot with some tracks which show up in Samplitude too much stereo and Samplitude warns me with a red sign that something is very bad with the track, indicating that so as it is, it will be not noticeable the sound when listening in MONO, etc., sorry for trying to explain my point, I wish I could write in Spanish for me to be better to explain, thanks a lot for such work and your fantastic videos! You have a lovely way of explaining thank you. Total amateur so excuse silly Q but why should the sides sit inside the mid? So what if for some frequencies they’re more audible on the sides. I’m not sure how or why that would make something sound muddy or wrong.
@LonelyRocker Жыл бұрын
Thank you! When I say inside I'm referring to how the analyzer creates the visual for you. In reality the mids are the sum of the sides, there really are only two sides in stereo and everything else is relative to that. Muddiness comes from instruments ganging up in the same frequencies. You can use a stereo EQ to try and remove those conflicts or you can use MS EQ to get a little more surgical. Once you understand that it's a very effective mixing tool. Hope that helps!
@loyaljohn4959 Жыл бұрын
@@LonelyRocker thanks so much for quick reply. I didn't make myself clear sorry. What I mean is why do you effectively say the amplitude of the side bits (as represented by the lower graph) should be less than the amplitude for the mids at all frequencies (represented as the sides graph sitting underneath/within/inside the larger mid EQ curve).? Effectively saying that if certain frequencies are louder on the sides than the mid section (sum) it won't sound right? Unless I've missing something sorry !

I know it's the Great EQ it's a nice one but I'm just not sure how to use it especially like on my song and I really want to put out an album, like soon I don't have that much money. But I know I need to do this the right way at least the first time. I mean I got everything to master pretty much, I even got the speaker to listen to you know mono house music I do house music, and so I'm just wondering and if you don't do it you know who could. Please answer me❤… (in the Mix) putting the spectrum analysis on the master track ? And using the mid side eq on every single track, right? And in ( the mastering session) we’ll do the same ? Thanks 😊
@LonelyRocker2 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly. The analyzer looks at the whole mix and each EQ corrects individual tracks. You can but EQs on busses and the master too...just be careful and only do what it needs. You can get lost in this. Mastering is a whole different thing. I wouldn't touch any mid/side EQ in Mastering if it's mixed right unless you know exactly what you're doing. Keep the mastering stage simple...good luck!!

Did I talk about a kitchen in this video? My new studio that I'm in now used to be a kitchen... ;)

Doesn't this tool also have a vectorscope? I swear I WATCHED a video, And at the bottom of MMulti/ Another window flips out and there is vectorscope and something else... When I looked it doesn't say that is a feature? No way I tripped that out!

@@LonelyRocker So crazy because that was the day I subscribed to your channel went through my history no video lool Brought this though, Plus SSL X Saturator. well good value in the deals.

Yeah I saw it somewhere haha But I brought this anyway not a deal breaker. Use Span also but that does crash out my DAW if I don't turn it off when I bounce a track out! Always forget as well to turn it off before doing it. Grabbed this, And SSL X Saturator I like that but would only buy it when its on this type of sale! Glad that popped up also.

I’m sure. It’s rarely about tricks. There’s a right way and a wrong way with everything. 😎
