Speech-language pathologists, sometimes called speech therapists, assess and treat individuals with speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders. They may work with children with speech or developmental problems (such as stuttering or delayed language development), victims of stroke, the elderly, and more.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2015, speech-language pathologists earned an average salary of $76,900 and an average wage of $36.97. The future job prospects also look promising, as the field is projected to grow 21% between years 2014-2024.
In this article and video, you'll learn about the job duties, education requirements, and salary statistics for a speech-language pathologist.
Speech-Language Pathologist
What does a speech-language pathologist do on a daily basis? What are their job duties? Speech-language pathologists typically do the following tasks:
-They will evaluate patients’ levels of speech, language, or swallowing difficulty. Patients who have suffered from strokes or other debilitating medical problems or malformations often struggle to swallow food or pronounce words. Speech-language pathologists help those individuals learn to use their muscles. -They also correct improper speech patterns.
-They identify treatment options for patients.
-They create and carry out an individualized treatment plan that addresses patients’ specific functional needs.
-They teach patients how to make sounds and improve their voices. For example, some children struggle with communication disorders, stutters, etc. Speech-language pathologists assist with communication disorders.
-They advise patients' families on how to assist with diet, swallowing, and speech development exercises.
-They maintain patient records and similar administrative tasks. -They will track a patient's progress as they continue treatments and speech exercises.
Education Requirements for Speech-Language Pathologists
What are the education requirements to become a speech-language pathologist? Here are some steps you'll have to take:
-You must get a bachelor’s degree first. Some universities have undergraduate degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders. That’s the best option. If not, you may want to major in something like English, Speech, or Communications. However, you can often enter a master's degree program with an unrelated degree (but you may have to take a few extra prerequisite courses).
-You must get a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited university. This will include both classroom training and clinical hours and skills exams.
-Complete a 36-week clinical fellowship.
-Pass all skills exams, as well as the State Board's exam. Some states will require certification or additional requirements. See your state for specifics.
-Maintain continuing education requirements.
-Visit ASHA.org for more specific information on Speech-Language Pathology requirements, certifications, and testing.

@DieselPatches IsHomo Speech Therapists and Speech Pathologists are the same thing. Both require Masters degrees ( except in Australia where a bachelors is entry level practice). In the US we are called Pathologists and overseas we are Therapists. Assistants require a bachelors, but sometimes they call themselves speech therapists. Because this term is not regulated in the US, assistants/aides can call themselves whatever they want (just not SLP).

I have a question my university that I’m attending isn’t offering an undergraduate in speech pathology or communication sciences disorders. However, they don’t require any specific bachelors and the masters program includes the prerequisite courses. If I don’t want to study for my masters at this particular university can I still get admitted to a master’s program without having completed a bachelor’s in communication sciences and disorders? Can I still fulfill the prerequisites?
@TatyanaRafeel
@TatyanaRafeel 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes, you can get admitted to a master's program without a bachelor's in communication sciences and disorders, but most will require the prerequisites to be completed beforehand. If you're an out-of-field applicant, some graduate schools offer the prerequisites as part of their master's program like you mentioned. They're often more expensive per course for those prereqs than taking it at the undergraduate level. An alternative is to either do a 2nd bachelor's program, which includes all of those prereqs for grad school admittance or to just take the individual communication sciences and disorders prereqs. There are some reputable online programs that offer these classes such as USU and ENMU. Also, make sure that you take the ASHA required prereqs while in undergrad. You'll need classes in the areas of biological science, physical science, statistics, and social sciences/behavioral sciences. Good luck!

Can I pursue Speech language Pathology after completing my Undergraduation In Psychology?
@kaitpotatoes6418
@kaitpotatoes6418 4 ай бұрын
Yes, but check the masters program admission page of whatever university you’re looking at and make sure you’ve taken the required courses. For example neuroscience, language development, child motor development is typically needed. Usually most people have a undergraduate in health science so if you’re undergrad in psychology was a science major vs English major makes a difference but it’s different per masters program so look at that admissions page of the uni you want to go to. It’s never too late to take a few courses you need before applying.

Yes. You can apply to graduate school to become an SLP with almost any undergraduate degree. Your graduate program will be 3 years instead of the normal 2 in order to cover the basic prerequisite courses.

If you want to become a speech therapist, you have to go to graduate school to become an SLP for 3 years instead of the standard 2 years. This is because you have to take a year or prerequisite courses that are the basics of the curriculum.
