I had no idea Butch Hartman was involved with Doogal! I must have last seen it when I was, like, 7, and my mom HATED it. Pretty surprising to find out that a movie like that had a cool history behind it. Also, I'm getting flashbacks of some of the lines in that movie. Someone help...

I've never understood why US producers feel the need to dub UK productions. It's not like they're in a foreign language or anything. US cartoons were just left as is and I learned phrases and language from them. No wonder Aardman fell out with Dreamworks.
@emokiddio7 жыл бұрын
I️ feel like some of it is also because if a British accent is really strong, it can be difficult for US viewers to understand + in this movie how they just redubbed it with popular actors - it would get more recognition and more people will go to watch it because they’re more likely to recognize them
@andrewmorrice91397 жыл бұрын
I grew up watching a load of US cartoons that we got imported over here. They changed nothing. So I grew up on American accents and references constantly. I found it educational and never had a problem with it unless there were too many references to US celebs I'd not heard of, but even that was educational in its own way. I feel that part of the charm of overseas shows is the different tones involved and I have as much fun with Top Cat as I do with Count Duckula. Well, we did change Ninja Turtles to Hero Turtles, but we don't talk about that. ;)
@ChristopherSobieniak7 жыл бұрын
I suppose it really is a cultural thing with us finding UK dialogue a bit tough (or perceive it to be with a younger audience). What you said about Aardman doesn't surprise me at all given the way Dreamworks treated them.
@andrewmorrice91397 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's fair on US audiences to not even be given the chance. As I say, US references and language are all left intact on imports here and UK audiences seem to have no trouble figuring out what's going on.
@UltimaKeyMaster7 жыл бұрын
As Doogal proved, audiences can easily see it as mindless pandering (even with Butch's effort, however improved it probably was, you'd probably still be able to tell). It's like when you're just plain dubbing over something, why would you treat it as a more creative adaptation? Dubbing an existing source shouldn't be the same as converting Super Sentai to Power Rangers, big script changes should only be made out of *necessity* that you really think audiences couldn't pick up on insanely subtle things. Americans I THINK are smart enough to want to know how British comedy works when it's the exact same language.
@Austinator06307 жыл бұрын
Recently, the trivia page for Doogal's imdb profile has been updated. It's revealed that the script for Doogal isn't Hartman's. It was discarded and rewritten by others(possibly by Cory Edwards who name is in the writing credits). Only a small fraction of Hartman's material made it into the final movie.

So the studio thought people couldn't grasp the concept of British coloquialisms? That's BS. As someone who's childhood was dominated by American made cartoons without localisation for my culture, if my 7 year old self can figure out how the school grade system in the show Recess worked and how it relates to our British school year system then an American kid "should" be able to grasp the meaning of "top of the morning chaps" as a greeting. It also removes some of the soul of the movie akin to how anime often gets localised to replace Eastern foods, like rice balls, with Western foods like submarine sandwiches.
@ChristopherSobieniak7 жыл бұрын
If it makes it up to you, I used to watch the Paddington Bear shorts from the 70's and I never had a problem with the way those were narrated!

Ok, but at the end when Butch said someone had redubbed and rewritten most of he had done, he doesn't say who did it. Until he gives names on who exactly did it, I'm just gonna assume this was a half-hearted attempt at deflecting criticism at his work. But it's also interesting to know that while he hated his experience with Doogal, he has no shame in the abominations that were the FOP live action movies.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Doogal. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Doogal's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who hate Doogal truly ARE idiots.

I keep repeating because you Haven't answered & I'm persistent I have so much to stay first off big fan of your work second when you had Danny as an adult you could of used Michael J Fox as Dark Danny thirdly I lots of ideas of what you can draw in your style 1. Archie characters 2. F.R.I.E.N.D.S 3. Newspaper comics characters 4. The original 8 Digi-destined (Digimon) 5. Hanna-Barbera characters (i.e Scooby-Doo,Tom and Jerry,Flintstones,etc.) (you're a former H-B animator you can do this) 6. The Wiggles (all members) 7. Grojband 8. One-Hit Wonders 9. The Cast of Your Shows (p.s while Tara Strong is a good Timmy I actually see Charlie Schlatter as the character what would that be like) 10. Star Wars 11. Looney Tunes 12. Queen (the band) 13.All the Live-Action Batman Actors(((plus Kevin Conroy (I know he's the animated batman but he's the most enduring batman))(3 different versions 1.Bruce Wayne(when they first donned the Cape & Cowl) 2.Said Cape & Cowl 3. them now) and last but not least your a friend of Seth McFarlane draw his characters and vice versa
