We had the same thing in the community I used to work in. People wanted speed bumps on their street to slow down traffic, but no one ever wanted one in front of their house due to the noise. Also, on the streets with asphalt speed humps you could absolutely hit them at over the posted speed limit and not slow down. You simply can’t make everyone happy.

Do the slow people down? Yeah, so keep them. It would cost much more than 2K to remove and replace them so the money lost would take a long time to equal out anyways. If your concern is the bump would go over the curb letting cars in the sidewalk.. They can do that anyways. Maybe make a gradual grade down to the road surface at the edges that doesn't meet the curb.

Fresno, Ca. (my hometown) installed the speed humps you described in my neighborhood 20+ years ago. Water runoff was not affected and we never had cars run off the road due to the humps. The worst that happened was on the first day, someone failed to slow down (warning signs/marking were already in place) and killed their car and another one let out a yell that I heard all the way in the kitchen.

@@realityandnaturepill That's actually why they make it safer. It's counter-intuitive because it does feel a lot more dangerous, but as a result drivers act with much greater caution, more attentiveness, and slower speeds. Doing 50 km/h on a tight road with a couple feet of clearance on each side just feels incredibly dangerous, whereas these drivers are so confident in the wide open road they feel safe taking it up to 55 or 60. When someone inevitably runs a stop sign, or a kid runs out onto a road, it can be the difference between a 30 km/hour crash, or a 60 km/h crash. Even just 10 km/h slower makes a massive difference.
@realityandnaturepill
@realityandnaturepill Жыл бұрын
@@toshley6192 They don't make them "safer", they make them less safe which drivers pick up hence why they go slower or even hit the brakes. The reason drivers think they can drive 60 on an empty road is because they can. I ask you, how fast can the average Audi or Mercedes drive on an airplane strip? 200? 250? That's because there are no 'obstacles'. There's no trickery, it's a fabricated potentially unsafe situation, an uncessary maneuver with the sole purpose of blaming individual drivers (and all of them). Road conditions, infrastructure, mobile phone use, driving an suv or pickup truck et cetera are all real factors for potentially fatal accidents, but they are harder to fix thus they'll just place a speed camera and an uneccessary obstacle. There is no difference between planting a massive tree with some reflectors on the road or one of these obstacles, yet you would logically consider a tree on the road unsafe, because it is. The only way for you to claim that drivers can easily evade these obstacles is to prove that drivers can deal with potentially unsafe situations as long as the obstacle has reflectors and doesn't cross the whole road, which eliminates the purpose and demonstrates the real issue: idiots who don't understand that a car is meant to go fast and is not to play with + the usual suspects like 8 ft tall hedges blocking any view of the road and turns so tight you could crash walking a stroller. Why don't we make cars drive so slowly that any kid could just appear like a pokemon and not be harmed, let's also make knives so blunt that you can't harm yourself and when we're at it make all electricity 5 volts to eliminate the threat of a shock. The common factor here is stupidity, not the tool, some things you just don't play with, we learned this as a kid. A car's purpose is to go fast, else we may as well be walking with an umbrella and a radio.

You don’t need speed bumps, stop signs are 100% better. No damage for cars, no loud noises from cars hitting it, good place for cross walks, looks safer for pedestrians, etc. I do EMS and Every single 55+ gated community they have speed bumps up the wazoo, problem is we get most of our calls in there and hitting those speed bumps in an ambulance when the person in the back is screaming in pain makes every single patient regret living there. Just install a stop sign, it takes real nut to run one, if people do install a camera, there you go revenue for the town.

@@funshtwithfatpete3019 Increase damage, not just at high speed... Some speed bumps that are placed in a 50 kmh zone will send your car flying at that speed, dangerous and unnecessary in the first place. Increased fuel consumption because acceleration requires more energy than steady speed. Increased noise for the exact same reason. Increased danger, especially coupled with bad visibility such as snow on the road. Increased delay time and danger for emergency vehicles. Increased danger and inefficiency for any pursuit. Now if you can give me a single realistic advantage of a speed bump, chicane, trees right next to a road etc. Please elaborate.

@Reality My neighborhood has a park in it. The speed limit is 20mph, but people drive 35-40mph down it on average. I know this because I have a radar gun and passed sixth grade math. A speed bump would stop most of it, unless they wanna floor it then stomp the brakes, they would have no choice. I've never, in my 17 years of driving, had a speed bump damage my vehicle.
@realityandnaturepill
@realityandnaturepill 3 жыл бұрын
@@funshtwithfatpete3019 Would you really know if if it happened though? It's gradual, nothing like a crash. I am not saying that you will lose 2 wheels and spin out rally car style. Talk to some honst cardealers or garage owners about it, do not ask your local government, the designers of the speed bumps or anyone who promotes it. What I'm saying is these speedbumps are sometimes absolute idiocracy if you can't safely drive 30 km/h over them in a 50 km/h zone. If the speedbump is designed for 20 km/h only then place it in a 20 km/h zone you worthless scumbags... The only cars that go over them with safe speed have drivers that either live in that street or have taken that route many times...they know about the speed bumps. Driving a normal VW I can only imagine what kind of hatred sportscar drivers could have for these speed bumps. I had to replace my rear suspension after 4 years of driving, the car was 8 years old. The main question I have is this: Why would you lower safety and efficiency for the goal of lowering speeds only? For example, where I live they had another great idea (because speed bumps are still too safe) they placed giant concrete blocks with flowers or a tree in them, they must weigh at least 200 kg and they placed them...in a curve, on the inside...so you can't even see if anyone is coming in the opposite direction, especially if they're driving fast. That is just amazing isn't it? All that taxpayer money going towards random dangerous obstacles on the way to your work or the doctor, they're turning this into a level of Mario Kart. Then here's this myth that speed is always a factor in a crash, yes it is..if every car was standing still there would be zero crashes, however what we are looking at is higher speeds. Years ago I looked at national (Belgium) research of this and it turned out that "dangerous" speed was only a factor in between 3% and 4% of all accidents, also it turned out that highways were the most safe places to drive despite the fact you drive at way higher speeds. Generally speaking we as humans have a good sense of speed, if almost everyone is driving 30mph in a 20mph zone then maybe, just maybe, the road looks more like a 30 mph one than a 20 mph one? This is how speedlimits are created: pick a realistic number and drop it by 10 to 20 mph because soccermoms and hippies keep complaining. Then ignore the fact that cellphone use is more dangerous than driving 5 to 10 km/h over the speedlimit (what s shock) because one driver has his eyes on the road, the other one is having a discussion about NFT's. In the research they also pointed out that unsafe driving conditions like potholes, cars with no wintertyres, poles and trees right next to a road, narrow bike lanes...are more dangerous too, let's ottally ignore that because we can't charge anyone money for that and it's the governments responsibility, speed is not. There was one quote that I thought was absolutely spot on: "Instead of solving the most important problems they prioritize the problems and make them seem more important if they are easy to solve."

@@funshtwithfatpete3019 so what if they go 15 mph faster?
