That manhole cover thing was hilarious! I looked it up and it wasn't actually a manhole cover, but a 2000 lb steel cap put over a hole with a nuclear bomb in it. The cap did not make it into space, but burned up in the atmosphere.
@bigredc222 Жыл бұрын
They basically made a gun, a steel pipe in the ground, welded a plate on top, then used a nuclear bomb as the gunpowder. The skin of the XR-71 gets to 600 degree's going 1400 mph, that steel cap was going 100 times faster, so it vaporized.
@DrBarbequeSauce10 ай бұрын
Scientists are actually still unsure if the manhole cover made it into space, but that speed is enough to take to from the ground to space in 1.5 seconds. Could it burn up that fast?

Yeah, to my knowledge scientist are still unsure whether it melted from friction or had not enough time to do so until it left the atmosphere. Considering that atmosphere density lessens with height I think it's possible that some molten steel blob left earth with multiple times the escape velocity. If so we can only hope that this ridiculously fast projectile won't be our first contact with another civilization. Just imagine two spaceships flying in convoy, talking and one gets shot down by our manhole cover out of nowhere. Well I would want to visit the idiots shooting down my friends by being stupid 😅.

Impeccable animation. Don't think that space moving objects should be included in the comparison as they do not overcome any resistance or travel against any reference point.
@christophergarcia3695 Жыл бұрын
Aren't they still overcoming elements in space, albeit not atmosphere but like radiation and solar winds. Also, don't they have some sort of reference point, like the ISS speed is measured via a revolution around the earth?
@JatinSanghvi1 Жыл бұрын
@@christophergarcia3695 I mean that the speed is not the property of the space vehicle. You can throw a potato out of the ISS in space and it will travel forever with speed faster than the fastest airplane, but that should not get it qualified to make an appearance in the video above.
@christophergarcia3695 Жыл бұрын
@@JatinSanghvi1 Oh. So, you mean vehicles whose velocity are achieved by self-propulsion, not momentum.
@JatinSanghvi1 Жыл бұрын
@@christophergarcia3695 Kind of.. I am not even sure what point we can take as a reference to calculate speeds of different objects in space. For example, for the ISS, they must be calculating speed along its orbital path around the Earth, but the reference points on its orbit can either be fixed taking the stars as reference, or fixed with the location on Earth's surface. Similarly, for Voyager, they must have taken the Sun as a reference point, else the observed speed will keep changing depending on whether Earth is revolving around the Sun in the direction of satellite or opposite to it. In short, it keeps getting weirder the more the object is disconnected from Earth.
@christophergarcia3695 Жыл бұрын
@@JatinSanghvi1 i did some research. It turns out I was wrong on how the speed of the ISS is calculated. Turns out, there is an equation used to calculate a satellite's speed, based on their distance from the center of the earth. The reference point is the Earth's core. Also, I see what's you're saying about the velocities of objects further and further away from earth. I think it actually has to do with shifts in light that they use to calculate an extraterrestrial object's velocity.

Very interesting and fun. A bit misleading with the Bicycle; I'm a very very average cyclist and I can average 40kph over 16km (10miles) so the comparison in the video is between me and the fastest male runner of all time, measured over 100m which doesn't seem a good comparison. For context: the fastest male track cyclists will do 1km in under one minute (Jeffrey Hoogland holds sea level record in 57.813secs) so almost double the speed of the fastest runner (for over 10 times the distance). Might have been better to do a (male) marathon runner's average speed v say a top level (male) road cyclist over the same distance, which on a flat road for the cyclist would be around 46mins and for the runner is a bit over 2hrs.
