I see stuff like this all over youtube and I just want to praise every little bit of it. There's so much creativity and hard work put into these designs, it makes me want to cry. You should be hired by Fromsoft or Nintendo to start designing levels for them, itll definitely look better than what they can come up with. Although....Dark Souls level design is pretty on point.

Absolutely superb work! I hope one day to be able to build levels at this stage of quality. The only criticism that I have is so minor, it's hardly worth mentioning, but for just that slightest bit of extra detail, having a small animation for the boat wobbling on the pond would've been nice. But! Hardly worth mentioning because this was an incredible watch
@Tomble8 жыл бұрын
Thanks man :) Yeah the boat animated is the kind of detail that is not in my timeframe for these videos. Prio1 is the basic composition. Prio2 is like a Detail level 01 and Prio3 would be stuff like that :)

this is beyond beautiful! great job! can you please tell me how do you call that Mountains that you put outside of the train? how can i use them? also how do you put an camera for having a perspective view? what is the name? I'm looking for some tutorials for this kinda job, I'm so interested in level design! < 3 Thank you.
@Tomble6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I just googled for some fee heightmaps for the mountains, but there's also plenty of very nice backdrop-mountains on the UE4 Marketplace. For the camera preview in the bottom i just placed a Camera-Actor in the world where I wanted to have it and then pinned the preview (with the little pin icon on that preview window) so that i could select other actors while still having the preview of the final shot I wanted to dress. I used to stream the creation of these videos from scratch on twitch. There's probably other people out there doing the same if you look for advice. Other than that it's just matter of practice and familiarizing yourself with the editor, which you can do by just grabbing a bunch of free assets for starters and trying to create a quick scene like this. Now there's a lot more obviously to the job of a level designer than to just bash these scenes together, but it's a good practice to get you started. Generally modding for other games can really get you started on the job

Well done, I'm impressed as always. I've been a lurker sort of, checked out a few of your level designs. I have UR4, but I haven't really used it. I've always teased the idea of designing levels on a much more professional level, but always enjoyed doing so in my own right. (Far Cry 4, Sims City, Fallout, etc.). If you don't mind me asking, how much money do you have invested in assets?
@Tomble8 жыл бұрын
Nice :) Yeah I see the stuff that I do for these videos more as a kind of playing around with the editor. Pretty much like playing with legos.

Have you ever considered making a playable, 360-perspective level rather than a screenshot to look at? Like something you can be plopped inside of and not have such eye-tricks that make things look further away than what they are, paths to walk down, and stuff like that?
@Tomble7 жыл бұрын
+Eric Moody No. Not for this video series. The whole purpose was to create a single appealing shot and nothing more. Really just something you can do every now and then rather than a bigger project. It was also something to get some diversity from the game I worked on at the time.

The only thing I'm worrying about is the extent of scripting in Unreal Engine 4. I'm a little hesitant with the whole visual scripting thing. Other than that, Unreal Engine looks like a great engine- open source is a huge bonus as well!
@Tomble8 жыл бұрын
true, but blueprints are a very nice way to iterate ideas and prototype very fast. Right now they are less performant than C++, but I heard that in a future release. I think in 4.12. already blueprints will be packed as native C++ when you build your project reulsting in no performance disadvantage for them anymore

I presume you used Landscape Auto Material for that? And also, where do you get those fab. trees from? ^^ PS: How effective/good would this be to use in a portfolio as a Level Designer? Wouldn't the Landscape Auto Material be a bit of a "cheat"? (I'm asking since I'm a student level designer)
@Tomble8 жыл бұрын
yeah I did. I am student as well so I have yet to find out after my Bachelor next year :) But I figured using some of my freetime to do this video series at least won't harm right? And how else are you supposed to present your skills on level design rather than showing various different scenes that you put together. But thats just me and my opinion. Apart from this video series I do have my projects that I mainly work on where I make everything from scratch, but as I said I thought it would at least not harm to start this video series :) For the trees, I think they were part of the LAM pack could also be from a nature pack that I have, not sure, but there definitely are some trees and other foliage coming tgt with the LAMpack

@Tomble7 жыл бұрын
There are many resources all over youtube, digital tutors, live streams and lots of other websites you can visit. I wouldn't say unreal is harder than unity, it's just different and quite frankly Unity nowadays is very capable of putting together nice scenes just as unreal is. Not saying you should not change, but that shouldn't be your reason. When I changed from Unity to unreal it was because Replication in Code for multiplayer was a pain in unity at the time, but fairly simple in unreal. If you want to be an environment artist / level designer you have to practice. And practicing basics like shotcomposition, mood, cinematography and other basic understandings always comes first. I recommend polycount and several facebook groups like ten thousand hours or daily spitpaint for inspiration and rest is just practice and learning on the fly. Good luck.

That is more of a "gaming cpu", then "development cpu". Are there a times you wish for more cpu power? PS: Thanks for responding.
@Tomble8 жыл бұрын
No I am pretty satisfied with my set up so far. Only thing is, that today I would go for the GTX 1080 instead of 2 GTX970. And DO NOT!! I REPEAT! DO NOT take AMD GPU! I had the worst time with the radeon r290x regarding development.
@MartinusTothus8 жыл бұрын
Is gpu that importent for game development? (i would not want to make game that everbody needs a GTX 1080 to run it). I mean, compiling shaders, lightning and stuff like that, that is work for CPU, not the GPU, or am i wrong? PS: Dont worry, I am an intel/nvidia guy since ever cuz i am a gamer and their technology in gaming terms have been always more advanced then AMD.
@Tomble8 жыл бұрын
No everything you mentioned there is gpu work :) gpu is key when working with unreal imo. of course you wanna develope your game with graphics settings and stuff like that to make it performant on low-mid end gpus, but you as a developer will have a better time using a high end gpu :)

Hey man, I love your work. I've always been interested in Level Design. Sadly I never really mastered any engine and most of my work was done in in-game map editors. I'm interested in learning how to create levels such as yours' on Unreal Engine 4 but I'm still trying to figure out how to even use the damn thing. Do you have any quick tips for newbies like me? Perhaps some specific useful tutorial I could watch? (I know there's many of them but I figured out someone like you could link me some better ones.) Thanks!

uhm. I'd recommend watching the introductional tutorials for UE4 that explain how to navigate around the editor and then just jump straight in. No. But in the video you can see that I only put this together for this specific camera angle. So if this were to become a playable world you would have to change a lot of things. The Infinity Blades shit is nice but I plan to eventually sell my game on Steam and other marketplaces so I can't legally use it
@adminabuse96077 жыл бұрын
Yes you can, as long as you don't take credit for making them and you keep it in UE4 engine, and not importing it into Unity, CryEngine, etc.
@ikeeichenberg90687 жыл бұрын
Darkinal The way I understand it, "for use only in Unreal Engine 4" applies to selling it as well as developing with it, and I plan to sell through Steam
@adminabuse96077 жыл бұрын
What that means, is it's only for use in development in Unreal Engine 4. Q: Can I use the Infinity Blade Collection content in other engines? A: This content is not permitted for use in non-Unreal Engine games. Q: In layman's terms, please... A: In other words, using Marketplace Content makes a product a Product. These assets can only be used in Unreal Engine 4 projects, with no exceptions. This means you can use them in commercial projects, but you cannot take credit for making them, nor use them in any other projects not created in UE.
@ikeeichenberg90687 жыл бұрын
Darkinal Ahh thank you! That makes a lot more sense lol. I definitely plan to credit all asset creators anyways, and I'm not familiar with any other engines so that works perfectly. I actually just went and downloaded them and added them to my project :)
@adminabuse96077 жыл бұрын
No Problem, and if someone does try something saying you can't, it never states anywhere that you can't use them on the asset page. :P

I have a question i am making a game in UE4 but i am having some problem on deciding on if its OK to use pre made asset packs or create my own, I can make assets as good as the ones i need but at the same time i don't want to be seen as a cunt dev for using some one else's assets packs
@Tomble8 жыл бұрын
For all the games I have been working on so far we never used any pre purchased assets, but only because we wanted to, to learn and not to actually produce something to live off as part of my studies. Also depending on your artstyle you won't find the assets you need online. But IF you do, I would suggest buying and using them, because you just save soo so much time and you are not lees of a dev if you do. Just recently I bought the very first assetpack for our current gameproject, which had one nice cartoony Particle system in it that I liked. I mean I could have created it myself, but why should I spend all this time that I could be working on other things when I don't have to. But yeah. As a rule of thumb, if you find something that is 100% what you need, buy it instead of recreating it.

Thank you. I am starting out as a solo dev for a game i am working on and i am with all honesty bad with creating assets but i am good at coding and programming overall so i was worried about if i were to use an asset pack that i liked cause i don't want to become a asset flipping dev so thanks for the reply hope to see your game on the market.

I personally don't see any negatives to using marketplace packs if the are exactly what you are looking for :) Good luck on that first project then! :)

back when i made this video I used 2x GTX 970 SLI and 16GB of RAM. Also a lot less space, but that doesn't really matter I guess :)

Thanks for quick reply. Nice building you have made to your rig. I am also building a full RGB setup. But as a student, budget limited you know :P My setup is right now: Monitor: an old Acer x193 HQ LCD Motherboard: Gigabyte H-170 G1 Gaming 3 RAM: G-skill Trident Z RGB, 24GB at 3000Mhz (Stock) CPU: i5 6600 3.3Ghz (Stock) GPU: Geforce GTX 1060 xtreme 6G RGB at 1873Mhz (Boost OC) Storage: *red face* :P I just hope this will be enough for a complete beginner :/ I also love my rig, but you gotta come into my instagram or mail to see it xD

It is a timelapse yes, but it's also done in only 3 hours. Also Speed Level Design sounds better than Timelapse Level Design ;)
