Speed kills your pocketbook. I don’t live in Canada, I live in the US. We use mph and not km/h here. I live in an absolute speed limit state, so speeding even just 1 mph over can get you stopped by an officer and fined $175.30. That said, it would probably be fairly easy for the driver to fight such a ticket in court, and most judges will throw it out. The rule of thumb most officers use is they only pull people over once they get to 5 mph over the limit or higher.

She also showed a bigger problem. Slower drivers tend to go to middle lane thinking it is safer when it is far more dangerous. Slower drivers should be in right lane. The advocate stated speed differential is the biggest problem which is what slow drivers in the middle lane or left lane create. Whatever the speed limit, slower drivers staying right makes everyone more safe. Slower drivers in the middle or left lane creates greater speed differential, regardless of the limit, and more dangerous conditions.
@tedsheehan54579 жыл бұрын
+TheGregory Colin You define going slow by whether or not you are going slower than other traffic. If cars are passing you, you are going slower than other traffic. Move to the right. It's the attitude of "I am going 100 KPH so I can drive in any lane" that is dangerous. You may not be breaking any laws but you are creating danger by creating greater speed differentials with faster traffic to the middle and left. All driver education promotes staying right except to pass. The middle lane is the most dangerous lane on the highway without the speed differentials and even more so with slower traffic in it. Take a motorcycle safety course. You will find that out day one. Higher limits work great in Europe with much higher speed limits but they don't tolerate slower drivers driving in lanes with faster traffic. If we were to educate and enforce staying right except to pass, our roads would be much safer even with much higher limits. I agree with the advocate.

+Ted Sheehan Right lanes on highways, usually end up in off-ramps. That means you'll be constantly shifting in and out of the right lane, as you go. If you're not planning on leaving the highway, stay out of that lane, as well.
@tedsheehan54579 жыл бұрын
+Mike Stavenes With respect, that makes no sense. On a 2 lane highway, do you drive in the left lane only to avoid interchanges? Of course not. What you are stating causes the problem of speed differential. Who should drive in the right lane? Only those exiting or entering the highway? The right lane on any road is for slower traffic, move left to pass if a slower vehicle is ahead of you or entering slower, then move back. It's a lot safer than sitting in that middle lane, causing unsafe conditions and having cars pass you on both sides. It's also what driver education and the Ontario Handbook state.
@MrNisse-ef9by9 жыл бұрын
Ted Sheehan There can only be a middle lane on a three lane highway. Two lanes are different...if you aren't following the flow of traffic, then you stay right. However on a three lane highway, if people are merging ahead of you, it's best to leave the right lane to them, seeing as how not everyone gets up to speed in time to merge. If you're doing 90 and someone doing only 60 enters in front of you, you either have to hit the brakes, or switch lanes anyway to avoid rear-ending them. The same logic applies to the left lane, where people are driving even faster...you wouldn't get in the left lane unless you're going at least as fast as the cars you're merging with, or everyone in that lane has to hit the brakes to avoid rear-ending you. If all you want to do is cruise at your own pace, you position yourself in middle, with slower traffic on the right, and faster traffic on the left. If you find that people are passing you on _both_ sides...get off the highway, you shouldn't be there if you can't keep pace. ;-) In any given traffic system, the more you alter the flow of traffic, the more likely you are to cause an accident, simply because not everyone is paying the same level of attention. If you're always jumping back and forth, you will eventually jump into the path of someone who isn't watching very closely, causing them to react at the last second. Till now, I always assumed Ontario drivers were just assholes...I didn't realize they actually _teach_ you to drive erratically. Now it makes sense. ;-)
@tedsheehan54579 жыл бұрын
+Mike Stavenes If you are cruising at your own pace doing 90 in the center lane because you don't want to deal with interchanges, you are the problem. Why is it OK to state that you must drive at the speed of traffic if you want to be in the left lane but OK to set your own pace in the middle? It's not. I agree that if you are in an area where you have interchanges every km or so, like Toronto, maybe the middle lane is OK so long as you keep up to the speed of traffic in that lane. But where you don't have interchanges for 5-10 km, stay right. The "middle lane sitter" is the most dangerous driver on our highways. They cause the danger by going too slow in a lane meant to pass traffic in the right lane. Trucks cannot use the left lane of a 3 lane system and if cars sit in the middle doing 100 KPH or lower, with most trucks going 105 KPH (speed most companies set as max per OPP) trucks cannot pass traffic in right lane. The problem with your theory is most drivers getting passed on both sides think those passing them are the problem and they don't get off the road as you suggest. If you can't handle lane changes, you should not be on the road. A lane change every 10-20 km to pass traffic entering the highway is much safer than middle lane sitting below the flow of traffic. And it's not a problem limited to Ontario. I've driven all over North America and it's common everywhere. It's the people who don't follow rules of the road and have their own theories that cause the danger.

You have to be in the slow (right lane) so if others are driving faster can pass you in the left. If you stay in the left lane and driving the limit or slower. So staying in the slow and driving the limit will keep you safe (so they say) and can not be pulled over. I can drive 65MPH in a 60 zone with people flying by me. The autobahn has no speed limit in some parts, the reason why accidents are lower is simply because of the system that is strictly followed, like getting a license in Germany is tougher, then the left lane rule is followed much more efficiently and better unlike Canada, USA, or the UK. In Germany the left lane is for the speeders above like 110 mph or 170 km/h and the right lane is for slow pokes driving less than 80 mph or 130 km/h. Some countries like Uganda or Trinidad which are less developed have the national speed limit at 50 mph or 80 km/h. In America, it is 65 mph or 104 km/h however in Texas it goes to 85 mph or 137km/h.

Speed doesnt cause accidents. it is drivers behaviours that does.
@Xpired_PCP2 ай бұрын
Speed reduces reaction times and increases braking distance. It certainly doesn't help avoid collisions. The problem is every city residential and collector Street was built as giant highways which psychologically convinces people to drive faster than is safe for the area they are driving in. It wouldn't feel like torture driving 50 km in a 50 if it wasn't built as a four-lane giant Highway. Narrowed and reduced to one lane in each Direction with trees planted on the side, it won't feel like you're going too slow, despite the fact you're going the right speed the entire time
@RobertSmith-rp3xk6 жыл бұрын
The faster you go the longer it takes to slow down and stop. But on the flip side of that, if you're able to travel faster it takes less time to reach your destination and so you should have less people falling asleep at the wheel. I like the main speed rule in the U.S. is to drive safe for road conditions and traffic.
@jnvqc3 жыл бұрын
That's what safe distance is for. In order from most important to least for road safety: 1- keep a safe distance, 2- keep right, overtake left exclusively, 3- travel at the similar speed of traffic flow. In europe we follow this rules very closely. Canada is the exception, all other "developed" countries have higher speed limits on highways. Also Canada has some of the highest highway fatality rates. Remember this, at 60mph/100kmh, a car covers the distance of a football field every 3 seconds. A very attentive driver takes half a second to hit the brake pedal or 15m/50feet, that's like 3 car lengths. Roundabouts are infinitely safer, faster, and better for the environment, they are everywhere here in europe. We have very few if any high speed signal intersections.

Legally 105 maybe, and company policies because they certainly won't pay the fines, but that is simply not reality. Flat areas probably would see a lot rolling at 105, since the most common way to circumvent the system, is ride down a hill to excess, then a click of the switch. Flats some can slip the clutch depeding, others have bypassed or defeated the system; multitude of ways. 100km/h limit is a proven number backed by scientific data, and a government in any form cannot change it without going through the same process. Money. It is what it is all about.

I can understand it though because I've often been in situations where trucks are unable to pass each other and end up being pretty close on an adjacent lane. This is a pretty hazardous situation imo.

Scarborough is a joke. They police the hell out of that area - cops sitting at the bottom of every single hill. I had 5 tickets at once for driving 5-10 over. Not even kidding. The 5km over ticket was $12.86. Meanwhile since I've moved to Etobicoke, I drive exactly the same as I always have. About 10-20 even a bit higher than the posted without issues. I've never had a single ticket here in 8 years now. They police the poor areas way harder. Its ridiculous.

It is not up to drivers to determine speed limits, it is up to the highway engineers. This should not be an opinion. Civil/highway engineers determine the speeds based on many factors. I do agree with the speed variance, but the solution is not to increase the speed; it is to impose a minimum speed limit or raise awareness to let slow drivers stick to the right lane.

They'll never change the limit. Fines make the government a LOT of money. Consider 50% of all traffic violations are speeding, yet less than 19% of all crashes are speed related directly or indirectly.

yeah right...... 0.7L/100km if I drive 130 instead of 100.....
@Xpired_PCP2 ай бұрын
@@Borntobekilled1it's literally on the national research council's website. Their conclusions from the study are basically this: - The majority of vehicles are most efficient between 60-80km/h depending on their drag coefficient and factors such as wind resistance or how cold the air is (colder air is heavier and harder to "break through"). That's why your car gets 10% worse fuel economy in the winter regardless of how conservative/aggressive you drive. -80-100 km/h is less fuel efficient than 60-80 km/h, but only impacts fuel economy by less than 5%. -At 100 km/h, ever single km/h over at that speed is equal to 1% worse fuel economy, and starts to fall off a cliff because the drag coefficient becomes too much regardless of how many gears/speeds your transmission has, or if it's an electric motor or CVT to keep RPMs low. So if you're going 130 km/h, you're getting 30% less fuel economy/distance than if you were going 100 km/h. We've known this since the 60s. That's why the federal highway standard in the US during the oil embargo was 55 MPH (90 km/h). It was a balance between saving fuel and speed. Same with Ontario. 400 series were 70 MPH (110 km/h) until the oil embargo, where it was decreased to 100 km/h (60 MPH), again, as a balance between speed and fuel consumption

The problem comes with the term SPEED LIMIT. Most drivers interpret that as mandatory speed minimum. So when they see a driver traveling at or below the limit they get angry. The simple act of driving at or below speed is felt as a passing judgment onto the speeders. This makes them want to push us to go faster by tailgating instead of simply going around.

This video misses the point. Canada has the potential to change and learn from other cultures. Many countries have better driver training (ergo; better drivers). The basic rules to follow are: 1) keep to the right 2) absolutely no passing on the right You can drive at any speed you want as long as you are in the appropriate lane. This system only works because of the system and the people on it. Driver training in Canada does not teach drivers these rules properly, which is why Canadians find it socially acceptable to left lane block or drive incognito in the middle lane. If you have a speed limit, or 6 lanes in each direction with uneducated and distracted drivers (texting), driving becomes impossible and unenjoyable for everyone else. Also, making the highways wider to 8-12 (or more) lanes in each direction and having carpool lanes are not scientifically sound solutions to either traffic jams or traffic flow. Driving is a responsibility, not a right. You affect every other driver around you. In nature the flow of traffic is the fastest in the middle (ergo; a speed gradient) Why can Ants and Water Rapids do this and not Canadians? Its time to learn from science and set emotions like fear aside. Raising the speed limit is only the first step of many in the right direction. Its time to show the world that Canadians can drive safely with etiquette on the world stage. Lets prevent self driving cars be the future for emotional Canadians. Education and Cooperation are the key.

It's absolutely idiotic to say "faster is safer". Objectively, no. When you go faster, there is more force in a collision, it's very basic physics. However higher speed limits that are properly conformed to reduce ambiguity for drivers as to what speed they should be going at. This does have merits for being called safer - because it reduces confusion and makes things more predictable. I think the real statistics to look at is how many people go 120 in a 110 zone, versus 130 in a 120 zone. If it's comparable, then there's no argument - if people conform a lot more to 120 in a 120 zone, then there's definitely something to consider.
@michaelbatori82039 жыл бұрын
+Chaosian01 In terms of physics you're right, but the real problem is distracted driving. German drivers manage to drive at 200 mph without killing themselves by the masses. Why? DISCIPLINE. If you pay attention and follow safe driving practices, those collisions WILL NOT EVEN OCCUR. So that impact you're referring to will not hurt anyone. Avoidance through discipline is the safest driving method.
@Chaosian9 жыл бұрын
Michael Batori You'll find little disagreement from me there. I do suspect we're reaching an asymptotic level of safety when it comes to discipline however. How can we change distracted driving, or evening drinking and driving culture? There's already some pretty notable penalties.
@Chaosian9 жыл бұрын
Michael Batori A more inventive solution, but I'm not sure I'm down on mass surveillance being the solution for anything...
@eSKape19949 жыл бұрын
+Chaosian01 Objectively, you cannot make a statement about whether faster is safer or not. For an individual person, it may seem that slower is allways safer. But when we are looking at traffic, there are much more things to consider than just the physical components. Raising speedlimit to a realistic level on a road where it is safe to drive faster, can have the side-effect that people drive less fast on the other roads. This may result in less accidents and deaths on these roads, thus resulting in the saying 'faster is safer'.

The insurance industry will fight any proposal to increase speed limits. As they said when the speed limit was raised to 120, the speeders still averaged 127. A ticket for 7 over instead of 27 over will not work for the insurance companies.
@Xpired_PCP2 ай бұрын
Insurance providers only care about high risk charges or convictions. If you plead guilty to going 7 km over the limit, they will still jack up your rates just on the fact alone that you were convicted of a moving offense.
@EC4U2C_Studioz7 жыл бұрын
They also need to enforce the left lane law more strictly rather than the speed limit. Instead of writing speeding tickets while the speeding driver is in the act of passing other vehicles legally using the dotted yellow line on the driver's side in a 2-lane road, they should instead focus on the delay of 5 or more vehicles. 2-lane roads have worse safety ratings than freeways due to slow vehicles on them causing frustration to drivers behind them often putting the faster driver in an unsafe situation when passing. They also should focus on drivers driving too slowly in no passing zones and by the time they are in a passing zone and/or have a passing lane in their direction without using the oncoming lane for a short time, they tend to speed up to prevent anyone from passing.
@Packerm876 жыл бұрын
I live in the US. The fast lane or passing lane needs to be better enforced. In Germany parts of the Autobahn have no speed limit because those drivers are forced to move to the right to keep the left lane clear. No all states enforce the passing lane, so drivers get aggressive and accelerate and drive around other drivers causing dangerous conditions. In Germany they treat you higher speeding and what to do. Here they just teach you how to parallel park and use a blinker (which no one using here anymore). Accidents are caused by careless driving. Speed limits are just an excuse to bring in revenue.

When one driver looses focus or distracted on how they drive 2. Mechanical issues of the vehicle they drive, ex. tires, brakes, suspension defects and etc. 3. Environmental conditions such as rain, snow and etc. 4. Presence of wildlife 5. Presence of aggressive drivers

As a professional driver, most important thing is to not drive by other cars and leave plenty of space in front of you than the speed limit, and allow people to pass in the left lane. Speed shouldn't matter unless you have a tire blowout, medical, or environmental emergency. Soon their will be self driving technology taking over driving for us in the next 10-20 years so a lot of this discussion will hopefully end.

How to fix the situation: 1. Driving is a privilege, not a right. Don't give everyone and their mother a license if they are incapable of driving. 2. Keep right. First you give a warning, second you give a fine, third time no license for you. 3. Increase speed limit to 140. 4. Set minimum speed at 110. Like the dude said, speed difference kills. 5 Anything not allowed or incapable of driving 110 isn't allowed anywhere but the right lane. No passing for them.
