Speed limits. Tips on how to spot them and stay below..

One of the biggest problems I've noticed is that I (and I assume other people) just unconsciously match the speed of the vehicle in front, without realising that the whole line of traffic is actually breaking the speed limit. And if you correct your speed and stay within the limit, the drivers behind get frustrated, tailgate you then overtake aggressively, sometimes even blasting you with their horns as they sail past. I suppose this depends on where you live, but around here I'd estimate it's up to 30 or 40 percent of all road users, and tradesmen in vans seem to be the worst offenders. Another odd one is where there's a rapid series of speed limit changes, where you don't even see the signs until after you've past them. There are places on my commute that go from 50 to 40 to 30 to 20 to 30 to 40, round and round, and the gap between them is, in some of the more extreme cases, maybe only one or two seconds. It makes me dizzy just trying to keep up. And looking along the road to try to anticipate the signs doesn't always help, because a lot of times the speed limit sign is obscured by trees or buildings, and it isn't obvious looking at the surroundings that you're approaching a school, etc. There's also a lot of 50 MPH zones in this area on wide open roads with few bends or side roads, that don't make any sense, and nearly everyone just ignores them. And again, if you're one of the very few who obey the law and stay within the speed limit, you get blasted by all the other drivers. Really the only safe and legal way to drive is to become familiar with the roads you're using, and drive slow everywhere else. And don't copy other drivers, because a large chunk of them are breaking the law.

As someone whose returned to driving after a 25 year break , all I can say is, thank goodness for my speed limiter. Didn't have them in the 90's.

I have my driving test on the 26th of September and my driving instructor saying that I need to keep an eye on my speed, as I’m struggling on 30 mph roads and 20 mph roads. I really didn’t realise when you said if you’re doing a 20 mph go in second gear and if you’re doing a 30 mph go in third gear that is a genius idea and my driving instructor has never told me that!! I have a driving lesson tomorrow and I’m going to take this tip on and see if my driver instructor says anything but I will definitely try your technique

I wish I'd known to really drum this in before my tests. It was a massive factor to me failing 2 times. I get anxiety pretty bad, so the under confidence in being at the correct speed, made it twice as hard as it could have been. I really don't know why my instructor didn't teach me this. lessons with 17+ in Norwich.

I like your video. Yes, it is helpful. As a new driver ( in England ), I would need some advice how to deal with tailgating. Sometimes when I drive and there is car behind me just few meters, I feel like I am forced to go faster. Sometimes I do go slightly faster, but I know that in the end of the day, I might be the one who would get points.

I really appreciate this video, but I was still struggling to see the signs early. I have watched the video of you approaching the mini roundabout repeatedly. I don't see the blue mini roundabout sign until 1:59 and at that point the 20 zone sign is obscured by the blue sign. I don't see the 20 zone sign until 2:03, but to be honest if I were driving, I would be concentrating on the roundabout and I am pretty sure I would not see the sign. Luckily, soon after there is a huge 20 painted on the road, but this is not always the case. It is probably the case that with the video I cannot see as well as I can in real life. What I have learned is to scan ahead all the time, and to pay attention when approaching or turning into new roads. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for this. It’s quite a challenge coming off high speeds to maintaining 30/20 without going over the limit. My instructor gave me a wonderful tip to practice imaginary driving at home. Sit in a chair with a plate as your steering and imagine driving. I thought that was brilliant! You can imagine changing speeds, traffic signs, how to safely navigate roundabouts etc. Really helps visualise stuff. Do it repeatedly and it should stick in your head when doing it for real. I've failed 3rd test due to not aware speed limit sign as I didn't noticed that new speed limit must applied. Until the examiner asked me to slow down. I did 37 miles per hour on 30 miles road and immediately failed my test. It's was so embarrassed! I usually drop down speed to 1-2 miles from speed limit to ensure I don't go over it. From what I understanding it's is illegal and easy to drive over speed limit. The examiner will use their discretion to judge speeding depending on how fast you driving. If you drive over 1-3 MPH you might receive a minor fault whereas if you excess over 5 mph then that's would be serious! From my experience.

Have couple roads in my city that doesnt say its a 30, and at first look you would think 20 as it is built up, plenty of crossings and speed bumps. But its a 30 its confusing x

The standard speed limit is 30, so if it’s in a built up area, it will be 30. Unless the local council have reduced it to 20, in which you will see 20 signs.

What is the difference between 30 miles and 40 miles zone and national speed limit is suppose to be 60 but someone on a open stretch road like country side there are street light so I get confused please help

30 zones are built up areas that have houses close to road. 40 zones houses tend to not as close to the road you are on. Most country road tend to be national speed limit, you should see the sign as you leave a village or town.

I have my test in a few days and I'm a bit worried about speed limits cuz I find myself often driving let's say 25-30mph and not realising it's a 20 zone cuz I havent seen a sign, if I do see a 20 sign though I do slow down to that limit. Can they fail me if I'm going too fast but notice a sign and then slow down?

As I left the estate at 13:40 there was a national speed limit sign informing you of the speed limit of 60 mph. When on the road you look ahead for the same signs on lamp posts.

I was under the impression that if any aid is fitted to your car, when the car was built, then yes. You can use cruise control so I would say yes you can use a speed limiter.

Yes you can if the road conditions mean it is safer to do so. But if it’s a dry clear day with no traffic and you can see far ahead, then 28mph would be better.

This just grants the councils more justification to add yet more 'cash-cow' speed cameras and charge even more fines. People don't adhere to 30MPH limits, Whatever makes our governments think 20MPH will reduce accidents through impatient drivers who're constantly willing to aggressively exceed any/all posted limits.
