I'm not sure when it came around, but I've only been using it for a few years. I resisted it because I somehow thought it wasn't old school enough for me. But sometimes it's the only thing that does the job, and it's definitely a great tool.

It's just a #6 round brush that is super old and the bristles are all fuzzed out. You know how they can get like that? Those brushes are great for painting fur. It's Arches 140 lb watercolor paper (details in description box above).

Try to get your cat in sunlight--what colors do you see? It might bring out reddish brown or blue colors, and you should definitely try to capture those. I don't use black paint, so my darkest areas are a mix of sepia, dioxazine mauve (purple), hooker's green, and sometimes thalo blue.

Just a tiny watercolor brush. It's not the greatest tool, so I have to use it really slowly and carefully. And then I sort of clean up the lines after I remove it. I think I'm going to try using toothpicks next.

I use the least amount of water possible to move the paint around, if that makes sense. It's something you get used to with practice.
@KellyEddingtonWatercolors11 жыл бұрын
Can you see my annotations in the video? I explained it there. I use masking fluid, a.k.a liquid frisket. It's like a liquidy rubber and it dries in a minute or two. I apply it to the paper wherever I want the paper to stay white. Then I remove it either with an eraser. It's awesome.

Thanks, your work is very inspiring.....you make it look so easy! I am starting a watercolor of my son's Pit Bull Rocco, for his birthday, any tips?
@KellyEddingtonWatercolors11 жыл бұрын
Sure, I'll make that happen for you in the future. It's just paper tape that I wet down with a sponge or paper towel and lay on the paper. I always draw a border so I don't accidentally overlap the painting area with the tape.
@crystalheart911 жыл бұрын
Wow, this is a beautiful portrait you painted of your cat Bunny. I have my kitty Annikah and I love her so much. I wonder if you would share with me what you mean by a fuzzy brush and also what type of watercolor paper are you using for this beautiful portrait painting? I subscribed.

I was recently in Key West and while visiting the Heminway House, I took a photography of a beautiful polydactyl cat that I want to paint in watercolor. I wasn't sure whether or not to mask out the whiskers, or paint them in with a white gouache pen. But after watching your video, I think I will use the masking fluid. Thank you for this video, your watercolor is BEAUTIFUL. Can I please ask you how you applied the masking fluid for the whiskers, because they are so delicate? Did you use an extremely small paint brush???
@mypingcat11 жыл бұрын

Love how you've captured the beauty of your beloved feline. Is the masking fluid something new? I tried water coloring way back in the latter 70's, might have done better if I'd had some of this 'magic' fluid to protect the white areas.
