I must confess, that the speed of the coal Merry-Go-Round train was far too fast. I was so focused on filming that its speed completely passed me by! “Must try harder Bishop”, as my School master would say.

I went back to Chadwick 133 to check Charlie's earlier investigation of speed assessment and was at first disappointed by the speed measurement trials. However I soon realised two things. First, accuracy is not important - about right is good enough - and second that only the simple tape and stopwatch method is actually reliable. Indeed with a small modification to Charlie's method the numbers can become simple enough that even a stopwatch is not really needed. I fortunately have a 7ft long straight (well nearly straight) along the front of my layout. Timing trains over this distance gives exactly 6 seconds for 60 mph - and 4 seconds for 90 mph, 5 seconds for 75 mph, 9 seconds for 40 mph, 12 seconds for 30 mph and 18 seconds for 20 mph. Two small clumps of grass mark the two ends of the trial stretch and I cannot imagine wanting anything more sophisticated. Checking speed is now possible without interrupting normal running. KISS - keep it simple, stupid.

just a fact from the full size railway. As an ex BR Guard, I worked with class 20's, and a little known, (to none BR employees), is that you don't have to run long, heavy trains with a pair of 20's. Why? Because they were always paired, nose to nose, except perhaps for P Way workings, because having long noses required them to carry a driver's assistant ( second man) when run singly to help with sightings on the driver's blind side. Running in pairs obviated this and saved a crewman. Hope this helps, regards Paul in not so sunny Cornwall!!

Hi Charlie, thanks for the video. As a Scot transplanted to the USA, I had to come to terms with consisting vs double-heading, and the US terminology has two advantages. First, it encompasses very long and heavy trains with five or more locos, three at the front, two at the back, and perhaps one in the middle. Second, it (consist) can be used as a noun to identify the configuration. We occasionally run such trains on our Club layout.

A great video, and I've aways liked the warship and have a lima and mainline ones, ive got a ' dummy'hornby class 25 i use for double heading , also the first week of January I got to see some different diesel traction from another country, and while at my neices wedding and a short holiday in America at Richmond, Virginia, I got to see some heavy US freight locos which was total different from our ones and nice to see some 1972 vintage locos still being used, even watched a coal train which was about a mile long , also near my sister in the local football park I came across 4 preserved items of rolling stock, a Freight car and a cabouse, also a passenger coach and us mail post office coach both built in the early 1920s and all from the original Richmond Fredericksburg & Pontac railway company.

First, forgot to say thanks for your videos again. Always enjoy them. I mentioned Tsunami by Soundtraxx as that is my preferred decoder but decoder should be irrelevant to your video instruction other than as you point out, different decoders even of the same brand can be troublesome. I am not familiar with Digitrax as my club uses the NCE (North Coast Engineering) power system. With that, consisting is a breeze and no limit of locomotives beyond the practical (2-3,4,5). As I was just learning about DCC possibilities a few years ago, I found NCE very intuitive and forgiving. Nice work on matching those with two tracks. I like the real world approach. At home having only a single five foot test track, I find JMRI works well when speed matching (as it's called here) and allows me to keep a record in the software. Can't wait to see what you have next for us. Best.

Those Warships are fine looking machines, as are the 20s. Even though my loyalties lie with the GWR/BR(W) Region, I do like the 20s. Watching some serious / credible double heading is a rare treat. Thanks for sharing. Even though I watched the entire video (on the TV whilst typing away on my phone) with interest, I made my mind up very quickly regarding my preferred double-heading method: use a dummy loco. Another "good point well made" relates to the unrealistic speeds at which trains whizzing around at railway exhibitions. I've often thought, "That looks a bit quick to me, but they must have got it right as they are experts."

Thanks for the video Charlie. Class 20s worked around Gloucester for a time and from memory worked in pairs, but I would have to ask my brother, that is if he can remember. If I saw 2 warships together, I would assume that one had failed and the other had recovered it. When touring Swindon works in 1962, we were hurried through the shop where several black carcasses of warships were sitting after fires had taken place in them.

Hi Charlie, that was both entertaining and clear as always, thanks. Running in N scale, I've also used these techniques for speed matching. I speed match between brands and even sound/non-sound decoders usually without much issue. The only thing I do different, since I don't have a good dual line layout, is that I just consist the locomotives from the start and put the slower one behind uncoupled. Then I just adjust the CVs as they run until they about match. Doing accel/deccel is the more tedious part, having to wait for them to speed up or slow down many times before it matches. Another good tip is that if you have two locomotives closely matched, but not perfect, put the faster of the engines as the rear engine (Between the front engine and the cars) so that the weight of the cars will slow it down and the slower front engine will be a similar speed. The only other thing to watch for is a BEMF CV, usually 57, which I tend to set to 102 to disable, otherwise some engines run much slower while consisted. Well done video and very informative for newer users of DCC.

Great episode Charlie - full of good ideas and info. One question that occured to me (which obviously might need to be a subject for a future video) is this; How much will the wear state of the loco mechanisms and motors affect the synchronisation you have acheived for the two warships (or the others)? I know from my own experience that cold vs hot loco performance has quite a high variance so I wondered about settings "drift" as locos age.

I've successfully speed matched a sound chipped Bachmann 20 with a DCC Bachmann 20, not the latest generation but the one with no lights. If you press F1 there is a delayed start up sequence but if you have them running and then press F1 you get sound but without the start up sequence. So yes you can match a sound with a non-sound. In the case of these 20s one needs to have a reversed direction.

I agree, Alan, but the problem stems from wanting it to pull into a station, and then pull away whilst the sound is on. Regards, Charlie

Thanks James, that’s most useful. Like most of these things, I’m sure it’ll take hours to find it within the manual. Regards, Charlie

Lokpilot 5's can be set to mimic the delay that the sound units have which is nice. Or the movement can be set to not wait for the sound. I've been able to consist lokpilot 5's with loksound 5's and tsunami's pretty well one way or the other.

Very interesting video Charlie, it’s strange, you would think that if you buy two identical locomotives, that they would run in sync. I purchased two Hornby 2BIL emu sets, same CV’s etc. , yet I needed to fine tune the CV’s to get them to perform the same when coupled together. All the best, Barry🇳🇿

I agree, Barry, you also need to warm them up first. Regards Charlie

My experience with consisting locos is using the Engine Driver app on an old cellphone through a JMRI withrottle server - very easy, has an easy way to control loco facing and lights. But the segment on speed matching was very useful. Thank you, Charlie - and a happy New Year

Most helpful video with everything clearly explained. I tried setting up a consist with my two Heljan class 26s on NCE PowerCab and the process seemed to alter the acceleration rates and overall speed profile. Both locos have the same DCC chip. I gave up trying to make it work and it took a while to get them back to running normally!

That does seem rather bizarre John. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie, This may solve your issue with the sound fitted Warship… I’m not super familiar with the LokSound 3.5 decoders, but they hopefully like the LokSound 5 decoders have a CV like CV124 that enables startup delay to be disabled? Prevents the loco from pausing while the prime mover revs up before setting off… On the contrary I believe you can program the starting delay into a LokPilot decoder… perhaps a more ‘prototypical’ 😂 approach. Happy programming!

Tee-hee, I do like it when you almost say the ‘p’ word Charlie 😂I have a q few old locos which are set aside for repair, but I do have in mind using them as a dummy loco. One is an old Bachmann ExLNER B1 in BR black, which I have often used with a black five, Ivat 4MT or similar and it looks great. Similarly, I have a Class 25 which I can run with its motorised twin 😄 However, I do rather like this idea of consist working as it is entirely prot- er…true to life 😅 Lovely to see the Warships and Choppers in tandem! But the showstopper was definitely the Class 13. It looked so good just crawling along like that 😎 Have a great weekend mate 👍🍀🍻😉

I've tried speed matching with my A and B set of locos without much success. They are fairly erratic runners which never complete a circuit in the same amount of time. 😝 You don't change the CVs with the Z21. You time how long the locos take to go a certain distance, then the Z21 works everything out automatically. Well it would if my two locos acted rationally.

Perhaps it’s time to get them both serviced. Regards, Charlie

Interesting video. Keep up the good work, Charlie. I think its too easy to over estimate the acceleration of locomotives (speaking as an ex-BR driver). I've found out after using Traincontroller for a number of years how to combine CV settings with the software settings. A lot of trial and error, but worth the result in terms realistic running.

As always this is informative even for me but the one thing I got out of programming a decoder is not to wirte all pages when changing CV's only do the page your working on and take notes of what you change as decoders cost money and you may find like me you will need to replace it.
@ChadwickModelRailway10 ай бұрын
Yes it’s always useful to take notes. That makes it much easier to retrace your steps. Regards, Charlie

Sorry about this Charlie but with over 50 years of DC - it's too late for me to change - a lot of SABLE. I have an DCC Atlas Canadian GP40-2w which can be programmed in DC using a magnetic wand and the controllers directional switch, very useful as the dealer had only imported the DCC variant. I have some dual mode Intermountain SD40-2w and others which do not have a separate chip so to get them to run in DC with sensible start voltage I rewired the motor directly to the rear bogie pick ups, the front bogie remains connected to the circuit board to operate the lights, no pick up problem as they run in pairs and without the DCC they speed match. Dummy locos were produced by Athearn in the USA for many years - with plastic wheels! For a modern model to be produced in dummy form would introduce complexity into production and the relatively low cost of the motor and drive train would not offset the cost of planning and processing the variant. Rapido even produced the unpowered Amtrak cab baggage car - ex F40PH for push pull trains with the powered chassis of their F40PH Locomotives.

Thanks William, for a very interesting comment. Here in the UK, I’ve never known a manufacturer to produce a dummy loco. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie, some great running sequences there. The class 20s were great. I did like the class 13s, such a novelty, only a couple of issues ago there was a feature in the Railway Magazine which featured them. What is the plan for 2024? might be worth including in a video. Anyway all the best and have a great weekend!!
