Sorting into 4 images probably made the biggest difference - more than the comfort of home. Second time on the puzzle helped because you "knew" the puzzle and could sort more accurately than if you didn't already know the images. AND - that's big, wonderful news about Spain and Jeanette. I don't particularly like picture puzzles, so I think illustration with specific sections is the easiest - well the picture with specific sections can be easy too as long as there is not too many small details 😅 Glad to see they allowed you to record your table - we should definitely do that in Spain too! 🤩 Can't wait to finally meet you!!! 🥰🤗

Congratulations on 2nd place! I enjoyed your analysis of how you would do the puzzle in different ways. I too suffer with Essential Tremor in my left hand and know the challenge you face when getting excited - I think trying to be calmer is hard, but it does effect the tremor. I'm going to watch for you in Spain -how exciting!

Thank you! It’s so hard to explain to someone what the tremors are and people often freak out when they suddenly see my hand shake quite significantly for what appears to be no reason. I do wonder if all the extra puzzling I’ve been doing has made it worse - or maybe just more noticeable to me. 💜🧩

I loved your presentation of your medal - sort of surprising although I was very sure that you would be top 3. I would not be surprised if you were able to finish in around 3 hours also with your build-as-you-sort technique - at home and knowing the puzzle already. But separating into 4 piles should still be the faster method for this puzzle (since you can do that sorting almost without consulting the picture). Finally, I love to hear that you will travel to Spain and I am especially fond of your team with Janette! As I have already mentioned in one of my videos the chances of me going to Spain are very low - but they are not zero. :-)

Wow! Donnalouise, you did absolutely awesome - that was fast! I kept gasping when you were talking about your tremors and your Achenbach syndrome. They sound really uncomfortable and you just got on with it. You’re an inspiration - and I know you will be one in Spain too!! That is so exciting that you and Janette will be there and pairing up! I am particularly excited too about the plans to build a team…😃 Amazing video! Oh, and to add my two penny worth on the method, I do think that the fastest technique does depend a lot on the type of puzzle. Even though you knew the puzzle and were at home, I think the sorting method for it would have been faster, maybe by about 20 minutes or so. However I think that collage style puzzles really lend themselves better to a sorting method. I did the Floral reflections 500 piece Ravensburger and that was essentially a collage gradient. My sort first technique gave me one of my best times on that one! That’s it! Sorry my comment is so long 😂 I loved your video xx

I wish I had more time to do puzzles. I don't think I could do speed puzzling but I enjoy doing puzzles. I'm trying to do a lavender puzzle but am having a bit of trouble with false fitting pieces

False fitting pieces are so annoying! I recently had a blue sky area in a puzzle and it drove me crazy with all the false fits. Good luck!! I'm sure the puzzle will look so lovely once done. 💜🧩

Very well done. And thank you for the enjoyable video. I tried speed puzzling and want to do the dogs 500 piece youtube race. But I feel very stressed in the beginning and later on I forget the speed puzzle and puzzle at a more normal tempo I think. But I was pleased with my progress.

I really think sorting into 4 puzzles, but allowing yourself to fully sort one of the 4 images would have helped save more time, especially allowing you to sort as you go on that one. Definitely next time I would sort by image with some good subsorting to speed up the build. We will be making custom shirts for our events and I need to have Canada represented even though I'm playing under the NZ flag. Maybe a kiwi bird wearing a maple leaf shirt 💜🧩

Congrats, what an amazing time and placement! Well done, you might have had nerves but that's fast. And congrats to your friends too, all looked like they had a blast, and that's what matters most. Personally I would puzzle as I go, and if I've done it once it goes very much faster. Last puzzle I re-did was asterix and Obelix 1000 pcs wit a lot of smaller pictures in it, and I pretty much halfed my time. Granted it's a much easier puzzle and I didn't speed it. But try another jigsaw and see what you save from just re-doing it. Use same technic. Will be fun to see.

That's an idea. I have a few puzzles that I sped run and want to redo for practice. I could redo them the same way and see how much I improve (or maybe not). I definitely remembered the image on the box but still had to refer to it a few times. 💜🧩

I don't know of any competitions in Florida - but there is a USA Jigsaw Organisation - www.usajigsaw.org - check out their website and see what events they have listed. There are also lots Facebook groups as well you can join. I live in New Zealand and as of right now, we only have one competition per year. Next year is in Dunedin, New Zealand - I think there is a place named Dunedin in Florida...?? But I'd say reach out to the USA group first and they will be able to give you more information. It was so much fun and I definitely recommend trying. 💜🧩

Wao, congrats on your second place, even with all your health difficulties. Hope you're feeling better. I'm so happy for you on your trip to Spain! I'm sure you and Jeanette will have the best of time. In regards to the sorting, from what I've seen, super speed puzzlers just flip all the pieces while semi sorting in the process but never do a full sort. Obviously it all depends on the image. This one probably benefits from full sorting because it's basically 4 250 piece puzzles.

I know if I need to try the spread and flip technique again but I just can't stand having the pieces all over the table. My eyes just can't focus well. But maybe if I flipped, sorted and built some sections all at the same time, perhaps that would be better. I do think fully sorting and subsorting this puzzle would have been faster to start with. Congrats on your excellent performance in the competition. I think you'll be the one to beat in 2024 😃. In terms of technique, the only thing I would recommend is flipping the pieces face up as you sort. It will take a little longer to sort but it will save you time in the end. Looking forward to seeing you in the world's in Spain. Do teammates have to be from the same country? I thought it was the case but maybe not.

I should have done a better sort and have the pieces face-up - definitely something to work on. As for the World Jigsaw Puzzle Federation Championships... If a pair each come from a different country, you must select which country to play under - so Janette and I decided NZ. She wants to be a Kiwi for a day hehehe. As for our team, if two or more people are from the same country, you must play under that country. If everyone is from a different country, then you can select which country. We might try to stick with NZ just because we will have shirts done for pairs so we can reuse them. 💜🧩

Wow, a trip to Spain, that will be a long flight, I hope you will love it. I don't agree with you that doing a puzzle at a competition is harder than at home. I found it easier, first you get a bigger table than the table I use at home, then you have the incentive that you want to do it better than the other people. At the NSW competition I shared a table with a man and even though I was able to concentrate on the jigsaw and ignore everything around me, I did glance over to the other side of the table a few times and couldn't really decide whether I was doing better than the man. In the end I finished 1 minute before him and he made the comment that seeing the energy I was putting in the jigsaw helped him to keep doing it as fast as he could.

It's about a 36 hour journey for me from NZ to Madrid, Spain - and then we have to take the train to Valladolid. I'm going to be so tired! But I'm already so excited to be going. I need to try and get a lot of sleep on my flights. I don't know why I was so stressed at the competition. I really wanted to do well and put so much pressure on myself. You did awesome at NSW. Will you try to go to Nationals in November? 💜🧩

Congratulations on your second place finish. Maybe try to find something like a group of people to get together with and have a smaller for fun competition, to better prepare for a competition style atmosphere. Might help you be calmer. If you can't do that, then maybe find a competition video and practice one of those puzzles and see how your puzzling stacks up. Good luck in Spain!

Good luck in Spain! I only just started speed puzzling and I wasn't too happy with my result. My goal is to beat 1,5 h for 500 pieces, so I would be qualified to the finał round :)

It's tough! I've only done three 500 piece puzzles and only one of those times was under the 90 minute mark. Just need to keep practicing. Now that I know I'm going to worlds and Ravensburger is sponsoring, I'll specifically practice Ravensburber 500 piece ones. 💜🧩

The North has been hit so hard. We live way down South and here, we actually need rain. So we have not been affected but I have a friend in Auckland whose house was completely stripped from the waist down and needs to be rebuilt. Lost both their vehicles, you name it. They have good insurance though but it's quite the cleanup. Also so many farmers have lost livestock - animals got trapped and unable to be rescued. Breaks my heart.

I have so many puzzles glued and framed around my house. The big map one behind me is my pride and joy - I love it! 5000 pieces Ravensburger Antique World Map. Some I keep, but most I donate/sell/trade as I would run out of room. I keep a small stock. 💜🧩

Congrats!! Thats a great time. I can imagine that you was pumped up, but with experience you will be calmer and quicker. Its funny how you're not a fan of pictures while I prefer them. I agree the photo should be as big as possible. The Kodak one ' im doing is pathetic, 51000 pieces and the picture is 10 inches x 40 inches you need a microscope ha ha.

Fantastic, second place. 👍👍Very well done for your first time at a competition. Looks like the table was big enough, with plenty of room. Not a fan of photo puzzles so I would have groaned at seeing that! As Marg has said, sorting the four images did make a difference the second time you did the jigsaw. I would definitely approach it differently next time and sort the four images with some good subsorting. It was so much fun and I'm already so excited for Spain! I can't wait to puzzle with Janette. 💜🧩
