This is an introductory video if you are interested in getting started in speed puzzling. It is from the viewpoint of a casual puzzler who is not naturally fast at puzzling. While there is a lot more advice about speed puzzling out there, this is meant just to point you in the right direction. I too am still learning.

Thanks for the advice! My partner and I were introduced into speed puzzling from a nice KZbin video last year and as casual puzzlers we were immediately intrigued-- we decided to buy a few puzzles, practice at home and sign up for Worlds in pairs (since there are no qualifications and we live in Spain) for our first ever competition attempt haha...watching this a few hours before we start our first ever try. :D

All of these points are great if you're trying to do speed puzzling competitive. But I actually highly recommend just speed puzzling at home... Casually. It's a different way to do puzzles and it really gets you in the zone. Just put on whatever music you like, drown out other noises outside and inside your head and just puzzle fast and nonstop until the puzzle is done. All you focus on is the puzzle. It's almost meditative. I'm not competitive, went to the nationals in my country earlier this year and ended up physically sick. I'm trying out an online competition this weekend (Euro Jigsaw Jam 20) just to see if that's more my style of competing, but really I just love speed puzzling alone at home. It's just an awesome way of puzzling! I'm hooked.

I personally can't do sm, especially the ones you mention, as it can be very unhealthy mentally. But i also can't do video calls, as i have dysmorphia, and have never gotten a response from the CJPA in regards to questions i had about what they would accept in terms of video setups. What i can do is in person competitions. My team regularly does a monthly competition, and bi-weekly (sometimes more frequent, depending who can make what) competitions at nerdy cafes in our area. We aren't the best, nor the worst, but we are steadily getting better. I try to practice on my own, or friends and i get together, but i find it very hard to have that same motivation and push to beat the clock when im not actually in a competitive event. It's like, im not puzzling casually, im faster than when i take my time, but i also can't seem to find the oomph to do it so that i would consider it decent training. Though, gotta try and get better. Have my first pairs even in October! Have fun in Spain!

Sounds like you’ve found ways to make it work for you and that’s great. Every puzzler is different and will take a different path when speed puzzling. Good luck with your competition in October.

I'm not very fast - but practicing. Your suggestion about practicing without the image was excellent - especially breaking up larger puzzles into smaller parts and doing them without the looking at the box. Another suggestion would be to attend a local event as a volunteer - did this earlier this year and gave me a good idea what to expect and was also just fun

Great tips, Sandra! I watched the first video you did about tips for speed puzzling and loved it as well. I will try doing a speed puzzling competition online. My goal is to do the USA speed puzzling competition with a friend one day soon 😊🧩
