Fun was a 15hp motor on an Alumacraft T14... overgrown canoe at 13 1/2 fet long and about 42 inches wide. Top speed was 30mph(on a lake with no current) and only the back foot or so of the hull was in the water. Very squirrely! Dad bet me it couldn't beat his 35hp and I smoked him crossing the lake. Had a local cop radar speed check me going downriver one day, 38mph (current adds speed)! I spent thousands of hours in that boat, mainly river fishing for big catfish.

I've always heard that chine walk is where the torque is trying to twist the boat and therefore the boat falls off the pad to the left and that point depending on how hard it fell will decide how hard the bounce off the water will be. So basically by the time you sense what is going on the boat has already fell off the pad, bounce back up to center and fell off to the right side . Hence the full cycle of a chine walk. That's how it was explained to me st least. The key to correcting it or so I'm told is to sense the very second the boat falls off the pad to the left and give the steering wheel a slight bump to the right, but with that super stiff cable system you have plus all the slack I noticed you'll have to upgrade to a sea star

Number 1 tip is to balance your tackle load out in your boat. I’m mean with a level on the water. I have a bullet bass boat and it chine walks pretty bad if you let it. You will not eliminate the chine walk with that steering system. You need to be able to bump your wheel to the left when you feel the your boat being pulled off pad to the right. Think of it like this if you were to put your boat in a constant slight left hand turn it would stay on pad and not chine walk but you can’t so you have to constantly jerk your wheel left the instant you feel it start to fall to the right. Be safe bro and get that steering up grade before you push that awesome Gambler.

Once the chine walk starts it’s hard to get it to stop. Until you get better you will always be behind it on correction. One way to learn is to trim out and as soon as the hull starts to dip to the left give the wheel a little right and hold that little bit in it. Not enough to make the right side touch down. Just hold enough right wheel to counter act the torque. Your boat will always dip left first. Go in smaller steps. Run up to where the chine walking is just starting and drive it at that speed till it’s easy then go a wee bit faster until you master that. In a few days you will get the hang of it and wonder how you had any chine walk to begin with. I been through the process with a Bullet that went 86 mph. At first I couldn’t drive it over 70. I mean it was ugly. I totally sucked at it. Then I got tips from Jaco’s Marine. And it all came together pretty quick. The key is don’t let it start. Everyone telling you to steer through it but not how to do it. Now you know. Just remember it will dip left first and then a lit bump of the wheel to the right will make it stay level. If it starts to get away from you just back off the throttle a little and bump your trim down a bit and try again. It’s actually easier to drive fast with another person in the boat. It make the balance better. Once you learn it you won’t forget how it’s like riding a bike. And you will be able to drive other fast boats too. And boats that only go 70 and drive with a tiny bit of chine walk will go faster if balanced and still have a few rpm left. Have fun those are great old boats worth keeping around.

The best advice I was given is to catch the boat left, straight not Left then Right In other words when the boat starts to go right, when its up on the pad the torque of the prop will make the boat move right, you steer left to (catching the boat) stopping it from turning/rolling right then straight. The torch of the prop itself will catch it from turning/rolling too far left. If you turn the wheel left then right you actually throw the boat the way it wants to go RIGHT (over correcting ) that's when it really starts the chime walking. Right left right left so on and creates that pucker Factor😬 ! It takes a little seat time to get the timing down. That advice was by far the best i was given. It straighten out that learning curve for me. All boat are a little different, even 2 of the same model, and so are people figure out what works 4 you. The height of the lower unit/foot and prop make a big difference in handling and top speed. That's 1 part of your (Set Up) Learn what you got 1st. Anything over 70 mph on the water is fast, fun and scary. Kill switches and lifejackets always.

two hand isn't gonna save shit man going that fast u can't stop anything from happening the wheel will turn no matter what an u probably will break ur arms holding it with two or at least tear ur shoulders.Most guys who own a boat usually drive with one hand unless u have a hot foot which they really aren't that good cause they obstruct the view until u get on plain an even then can still make u sit low in boat.

minor corrections in the steering will get you past the chine walk. It takes seat time and practice. You'll get it. It's all timing, until it becomes second nature.
@SBFishing3 жыл бұрын
For sure! No excuses for lack of seat time, but I also think the no feedback steering makes it difficult to make those adjustments. It basically locks the steering at high speed, and I feel making a “small” correction will overcompensate and send me into a not so fun time 😂. Hopefully upgrading to hydraulic this winter. The boat is currently down to the bones right now and I’m trying to fully restore it.

I've got an 88 Ranger 374V (17'10" boat) and had a rod blow through the head. I coulda waited a couple months for parts/rebuild or have them basically bore out the cylinders etc and turn my 150hp into a 200hp with parts in stock. Soo obviously I had them blow the whole thing out. Only after a couple times out I had to take it back and have them reinforce the transom because the motor was to much power for the transom(After the break-in period.) My speedometer goes to 85mph and the peg is probably 5mph passed the 85 mark and I could peg that sucker. I don't know about Gamblers hull's but I thought they were designed with speed in mind? At 85mph my boat is smooth, no chine at all which is scary cause it's real easy to trim her up and let her eat but I've only pegged it the one time and wasn't watching my gps speed just the gauge. I'm guessin I hit aprox 90mph with 2 people and full gear but I'm good with about 65mph also lol. I don't have hydraulic steering either, wow right at 70mph yours is just rockin like somethin crazy. Gotta be the hull design right? Mine doesn't rock like that at 70mph at all.

@jamesshepherd77273 жыл бұрын
Sorry I told you opposite the way the boat will lean to. You need to bump it to the left with the wheel while the torque tries to roll your boat to the right. After so many yrs you don’t think about it often. If you hold a very slight left turn and I mean very slight your boat will try to stay balanced. Just try and keep the right side from touching the water. That will bounce it back to the left and it will keep doing it. So basically just keep enough wheel pressure to keep the right side from touching. If you need to go right while going fast just release some pressure on the wheel and it will track right. Just don’t let that side touch or the chine walking will start. Eventually you will know when to give a little left to bring it out of the chine walking. It will get easier. That boat is going to be doing 80 plus with the right prop.
