Thank you for the tutorial! I walways forget the lights when optimizing my scenes. This scene lends itself to the modifications you made, but anything lit in daylight or an interior would probably come out dark in the corners and creases without all those light bounces.

Very Helpful stuff. If no-one else mentioned it I remember reading somewhere that tiles should be set at multiples of 8 for example 64 x 64 , 256 x256 as these are numbers that processors work best with due to 8 bits in a byte .

Taking "Spatial Split" BVH could also potentially further improve render time of presented scene. It speeds up bvh tree traversal when small faces are in proximity of large ones.

You could bake your lighting in static scenes to render your scene even in realtime. Thats great for animations because you render once and that just do your camera animation stuff and so on. Of course the downside is you have to rebake the whole scene after one change in lighting and so on.

Nice video, although the part about multiple importance is a bit false. 1. Without an HDRI (but a solid color) multiple importance makes no sense as it uses the light information of the HDRI to calculate where to spend more calculations on and where to spend less. Solid color is the same at every angle so it doesn't need that. 2. The resolution option doesn't controll the resolution of the HDRI but the resolution of the map used for thius calculation (generated behind the scenes). So higher resolution means less noise but higher memory usage. correct me if i'm wrong
@RemingtonCreative
@RemingtonCreative 7 жыл бұрын
You're completely right. The reason I enabled multiple importance was because it's a good tactic to reduce noise in general, I didn't really mention that though. Thanks for helping :)

The auto tile size works well with a GPU but doesn't help at all with CPU. In fact, it makes mine slower. For mine(i7 4720hq), the best tile size is the smallest tile size I can make that still retains the frame dimension ratio. For example, if I am rendering 1280x720 frame, my tile size needs to be 16x9. If my frame size is 1920x1080 my tile size needs to be 48x27. I spent several hours one day figuring this out. It still make little difference on small frame sizes but on HD and 4K it does make a noticeable difference.
@alexandreriou1577
@alexandreriou1577 7 жыл бұрын
Blender Rookie no it's just tile sizes need to be different for gpu and cpu because they don't work the same. For gpu, the best tile size is 256x256, the best for cpu is generally 16x16. blender guru made a video about that if you are interested.
@BlenderRookie
@BlenderRookie 7 жыл бұрын
16x16 is not optimal unless you are rendering a square frame. I can prove it. Pick one of your projects and render a full HD frame(1920x1080) with the CPU and set your tiles to 16x16 and time it. Then set your tile size to 48x27 . Rerender it and it will be quicker than 16x16. Granted it will only be slightly quicker but it will be quicker.
@alexandreriou1577
@alexandreriou1577 7 жыл бұрын
yes im just saying a general rule of thumb is to set it to 16x16 for cpu, so you don't have to calculate the ratio every time. I use GPU anyway. BUt thanks for the info, i didn't know about that!
@BloodyRainRang
@BloodyRainRang 7 жыл бұрын
The best is to just benchmark it yourself, there's no universal setting for either and what works great for one person can be horrible for another. Best example, I keep seeing the recommendation of using 16x16 for CPU and that does beyond horrible compared to 128x128 for me.
@RemingtonCreative
@RemingtonCreative 7 жыл бұрын
+BloodyRain2k What this guy said ^^ every processor and GPU has a different architecture that results in better or worse performance under certain circumstances. I feel like a big misconception came from Blender Guru's video where he shares his own results, but that's only with a single set of hardware, and doesn't accurately represent the population. So do your own tests and find what works best for you.

Huh, interesting. Didn't know about "Auto Tile Size" so far. Just tested it and at first I thought it doesn't work for my system (5820k, 2x 980ti), but the suggested tile size of 960*540 (target 1024) for a 1920*1080@100% scene turned out to be faster than my usual setting of 512*512 by around 6%. Not huge, but still an improvement. Other settings: 12 threads, Bottom to Top (for me 10% faster than Hilbert Spiral, Image Draw: GLSL (shaves off 20% vs. 2D Texture) My system profits a lot from large tile sizes: 960*520 (target 1024) 1:12min 512*512: 1:16min 480*360 (target 512) 1:20min 256*256 1:31min 230*216 (target 256) 1:32min (simple scene, but with waaaaay too many shiny faces) So thank you for making my renders faster again :)

Ohhh. Filmic Blender. Filmic doesn't do much about light physics. It's just color space. It won't speed up or slow down your render times noticeably. However it is a great thing to use.
@KaidoLP
@KaidoLP 7 жыл бұрын
not quite as it changes the color space as well as some other things in a way that makes shadows much brighter without clipping the highlights. that allows for less samples, so it doesn't speed the render up but if done right improves noise levels PS I messed the name up the first time

The reason you've got the render slower is because you enabled Multiple Importance on the World. It should be enabled for an hdri only, not for the constant color or Sky. And yes, auto tiling works not the best on my tests. I came up to 16x16 for cpu and 256x256 on GPU

The best tips to improve render speed. Buy a faster GPU and ideally more power efficient GPU which will also save on your electricity bill. Also there are some fantastic free noise reduction tools that run as a post process after each frame they require a little bit of setting up in terms of render settings but when i was into Blender about a year ago i used them with great effect, you can massively reduce your number of samples and still get a clean image. Sorry i can't give links and be more specific its just that i have forgotten the details it was a long time since i used it.

My theory is that Blender partitions a portion of your computer's resources when it starts up so as to not disturb other programs as much. It used to say how much memory it reserved in that 2 second console window but I haven't seen it since 2.76. I'm not sure if it really works/helps but my ritual when running long renders is to close all background programs, then restart blender and just hit f12.

Is this a private project or can you share the file with us? I'd like to compare my PC's rendertime. Thank you in advance :)

In the beginning when you show the default render settings, you say you're rendering at 960 x 480 resolution... but you're settings say 50% of 1920 x 1080 - isn't that 960 x 540? ;) Never mind, still good hints in this video for people who want to speed up their render times.

Can't it be because you didn't optimized the scene? I can't imagine an scene where all those 15 million faces are worth it. You should downgrade the farest models as they won't be noticeable in the final render. I say it just because to save you hours of render time.
