Just spoke to a friend of mine who works at Rebellion, he's only played the new speedball once, and says it's not quite as quick as the old one, but they're tweaking it, the controls take some getting used to as well. I've told him to beat the devs with a stick till it's as good as the original.

There was actually many differences between the ST and Amiga version of Speedball 2. I have played both versions. The Amiga version as mentioned had a lot more sounds effects and better quality. But also the game played smoother, had more animation. There was more detail on the pitch, more colours and patterns basicallly. For example the big painted star on the pitch is completely missing on the ST version. The lack of visual ques makes it difficult to know where you are on the pitch sometimes. It was also full screen where as the ST version was 3/4 screen. The frame rate was better on the Amiga. A great game on both machines but the Amiga version is better. It just is.

I like the text adventure library idea, but perhaps you could use the barcode scanner system instead as you do in the shop. That way you could have a shelf of 'books', each with a barcode, and then the player could choose a book, scan the code, and then play it in the old fashioned way with a keyboard and old style monitor.

As always, great episode, gentlemen! The best show ever to watch on Saturday while enjoying a morning cup-o-coffee (three of them actually) and I loved it when Duncan created a-la text adventure screen with Dave on it and then with Neil :) could make it to a great text adventure game about Dave House mysteries and TWIR masters ... actually I'm gonna try to play a text adventure game with ChapGPT: I recon if i manage to explain him (her?) the rules then he (she ?) might actually create a game for me and play a narrator role in it ... maybe ...

Thanks for correcting ST game history Dave. Mobygames for example has tons of games presented as Amiga originals even if they were not. Hopefully there's going to be some effort from site admins to correct 16bit gaming history.

Text adventures. Spent many hours playing them back in the day. If you have them in the cave, you'll need space for people to draw the maps. Could let people carry on from other people's attempts at solving the game. FWIW there are quite a few text adventures for the Sinclair QL (emulators are available.) which are unique to the platform, some public domain.

A brilliant documentary for text adventures is.....get lamp......well worth a lot. Infocom seem to get a lot of airplay, i feel but I loved the old games like scot Adams the Count or the Hulk, etc. It was my era, but I feel the early stuff doesn't get a mention. Excelsior, though.

I've always much preferred Speedball to the sequel. They added all those daft things round the edge which meant you just ended up going for the stars or undoing the loop when the other person got it. Scoring goals became a more minor objective, which ruined it for me. I was shocked to hear Dave say he doesn't like the Amiga title tune on the Amiga! It's one of my favourite Amiga tunes. I tried the ST one and it's okay, but nowhere near as good as the Amiga one. I guess it's just what you are used to. When you grow up with a song on the radio that version if the one you like the best, even if it's a cover version.

Rebellion is a solid dev but don't always get things right. They made a sequel to Evil Genius recently and it didn't quite hit the mark apart from bringing back James Hannigan's music. Even the art style was too cartoony. I'd like to see Alien Vs Predator remade though.

It does seem a shame that the major players in the e-ink book industry haven't released a device capable of reading IF books - I mean, i get why.. there isn't enough IF on the publisher side to make it something they can monetise, but it would be a fantastic feature, especially in getting kids reading, given Kobo has now brought in colour, and i have half heard Amazon is now biting their heels.

I'll be honest having reviewed the speedball trailer... They've just not got it right. What it needs to be is ultra cyberpunk, hard shiney metal, not plastic. The music needs to be hard, it needs atmosphere, and the courts to be dirty, steamy, poorly lit, grimey. The players all need to be scarred, have implants that reflect past injuries. It needs a back story and a backdrop of corporate nastiness, like Rollerball. More than that, it needs to feel fast and brutal. It's way way too tame in this and all versions I've seen that haven't got me to buy since Speedball 2. I can't say this enough, but the aim should be to remake Speedball 2, and make it bigger. More leagues, more players to transfer, open ended (within reason), and it can still be 2D, it doesn't need to be 3D. I'd also make sure to keep the palette as much as possible. Metal and orange, and the teams having hints of colour, but mainly metal. Whatever the Rebellion version is, it isn't it... and that makes me sad. It needs to be a dystopia quite frankly, not some kind of pretend hard cartoon. Hopefully i've made my point. :) Speedball 2 is one of the few retro games I return to and play regularly because it's a great game, after all these years, and not for a retro trip.
