Ford should have to recall and replace every single one of these with a modified design that has a usable drain and refill. Terrible design guaranteed to fail. And yes I realize they put a "drain" in some of them, but you can't open it and even if you can, you have to be very creative to refill.

Thanks for your video. I’ll have my mechanic check it out this coming week when he’s got it on the hoist to put on new tires. I’ve got almost 187000 miles on mine bought used a couple years ago. I don’t know if it’s got a drain or not but I will definitely have it checked. It’s been idling rough sitting at a stop and giving off a burning smell occasionally when driving around the city. Also gives trouble starting right after fueling up which is weird and probably unrelated. Thanks again from Calgary Alberta Canada.

Its a pretty simple transfer case that I think should last a long time if it’s serviced. Obviously not a great idea by Ford on this one.
@mikejames70132 жыл бұрын
Usually you use a suction pump and drain it through the fill plug. Do you have a tow package on that Lincoln? The reason I ask if you have a factory tow package they usually have a transmission cooler, if you don't I'd suggest installing a tranny cooler, cost is about 60 bucks and easy install (hardest part is taking off all the crap from the grill to access the radiator), as a "metal man" you might consider fabricating a removable heat shield to help protect the unit from that Catalytic converter, and exhaust pipe. I drive a Honda Pilot AWD and their are many issues with that as well. Great video, that drain plug is much easier then the suction method, better chance of getting it all. (Although Ford says serviced for life, they obviously give you an option with that fill plug, or it would be completely sealed with no place to add fluid)
@SpeedBumpGarage2 жыл бұрын
I do have the tow package but I honestly haven't checked for a trans cooler. I was actually going to suck the fluid out until I seen how easy the plug was going to be to install. Thanks for watching!

A local pal bought one of there for $1000, the whole vehicle, 86k miles. The PTU was split in two from bearing seizure. He took the PTU out and obtained new from dealership. I helped him put it back together, and noticed the new PTU has both drain and fill plug, the fill hole and screw is new to the design. Horrible placement of cat, as it bakes the PTU. The old unit looked like it contained dried asphalt. You provide a great solution, when drain hole not present, and this gearbox should be serviced on a 10k interval, maybe even more often. Your placement has much better access than the new design.

You don't have to split the case you just suck it out of the fill hole. Putting a drain plug in is awesome though 👌

@vincentrobinette1507 Жыл бұрын
Not exactly. With all the gears in there, there isn't much clearance to snake a siphon tube down in between them, to get to the low point in the housing. A drain plug is the practical way, and, much easier for regular servicing.

Thanks for the video. Very informative and having the measurements is key; you don't want to drill in the wrong spot on the PTU.😎 Curious, on your 2nd drain, did you have the fill plug removed before you started it? Seemed to drain very slowly. Also agree with you that because you waited a long time to do your 1st drain, it's going to take some time to get the residual sludge build up out. I've seen a KZbin with PTU's disassembled and the sludge build up can be really bad (very thick). I did my first drain and refill (through the fill hole) with just over 60,000 miles on my 13 MKX and while the fluid was dirty, it wasn't as bad as yours. We have cold winters where I live, so maybe that helps with keeping the temps down....at least half the year. Anyone leaving in a hot climate should install the drain plug and/or do the drain and re-fill through the fill hole. Thanks to your video, I think I'll tackle installing the drain plug. 👍. PS> Having a lift makes this job WAY easier.

@HuskerRed118 ай бұрын
Think I'm going to do this this Spring. 2019 Ford Taurus Limited AWD. Has anyone found, or used a flushing agent to use after it has drained? I'm sure there's still some leftovers that'd I'd like to get out. Seen a guy use brake cleaner & a lil hose hooked to the can to rinse it out. He could move the lil hose around & get better angles to flush it out. Just wondering if anyone has tried that, & if so how'd it go?
@TheRoadhammer379Ай бұрын
I know most will be afraid of the method I use but here it goes: Drilled and tapped for drain plug. Filled PTU with diesel fuel, let it sit overnight. Next day, removed fill plug, drained diesel fuel, and using an air nozzle with rubber tip to fit tight against the fill plug hole, I just kept air going to the PTU until no fuel came out anymore. I do 25k oil interval on the PTU and we are at 170k and original PTU.

There really isn't a lot of clearance between the gears and the inner housing. @vincentrobinette1507 Жыл бұрын
I'm sure a mechanic would charge many times more, than it would cost you, even if you had to buy the 7/16 drill bit, ratchet wrench, extension, socket, tap, drain plug, and the gear oil. If you bought a cordless drill with battery and charger, you might finally be close to what a shop would charge. Then from there on, its a simple DIY task, costing only the gear lube. If I remember right, these power transfer units only hold 1/2 quart. If not too much is lost during filling, you might get 2 services out of one quart. Very minimal cost, to greatly prolong the service life of a very expensive component!
