One of, if not the, biggest problems with the Nissan/Infiniti VQ platforms is the RASP! We all want change up our exhaust and let these cars breathe in order to pull as much power out as possible, but then we are smacked in the ear drums by the hideous raspy nonsense!
Here is what causes rasp and how we can fix/prevent it!!

The VQ is a notoriously raspy platform and changing up your exhaust components can potentially compound that characteristic. Unrestricted exhaust frequencies, thinner walled components, lower quality materials, or even higher quality, but more rigid materials like stainless steel or titanium can lead to raspy noises in your exhaust as they do not absorb those frequencies as well. Luckily the solution is relatively simple!

I just had a Fast Intentions TDX X-pipe exhaust, along with a Stillen Gen 3 long-tube CAI, installed on my 370Z by Fast Intentions at their Simi Valley shop about a week ago. I also had the engine dyno tuned with the EcuTek software by Sebastian Chakoff at Specialty Z, also in Simi Valley. The result has been a great sounding system that has no rasp and that produces great power, 321 rwhp @ 7200 rpm on the Dynojet chassis dyno. The torque has scaled up by about 15% over the whole rev range, with the car much more lively and responsive. What I did was not cheap but I was willing to spend what it would take to get the results I was looking for. I elected this route, saving money on the purchase of a new 2019 370Z vs the used Porsche Cayman S I had been considering and using the money saved for future modifications. If you cheap out on the products or the expertise of the people who work on the car you are taking a gamble, which may or may not work out for you.

i know this isnt the same as having a modded car pushing out a ton of power and gas through an exhaust but a testament to this is me having NO MUFFLER on my eclipse, just a big cannon tip, while retaining the stock cats and resonators, the sound difference is almost unnoticeable besides more bass and growl being allowed through with no rasp

The cats really do a lot of work in terms of muffling volume and killing rasp.
@testflyer2779

Well stated... In the process of solving the same problem in a ‘20 supercharged Coyote motor. The exhaust system consists of a Stainless Works long tube headers/high flow cats/Y-pipe/factory resonator/dynomax 1-in/2-out muffler/two 3” turn-downs. Great V8 tone through 3000rpm; after that it gets increasingly raspy, to the point where it drowns out the blower. So even in my system, with high flow cats, I still have plenty of rasp. The only difference that I’m aware of between high flow cats and the OEM cats is the size of the honeycomb in there. So that wasn’t my first suspect. Planning on adding a longer resonator; hopefully that’s the answer.

@SpeedCultureStudios

That should be a good combo. Single exits can get super raspy just because there isn’t enough space to fit large resonators. With a resonated y and some other ones in line, you should get a nice even tone!

Mine is loud? It’s not THAT loud. It’s perfect. An open exhaust v8 is loud. A straight pipe vq37 is loud. This is not loud. And that’s not really a secret. Bigger the muffler, the quieter it is. My borla muffler is 20 x 9 x 5 and top quality. Resonators out back at 4” round by 20” in length. Perfect mellow tone cruising and aggressive and throaty at wide open throttle-just how it should be.

Your problem is your y pipe, the inlet is 2.75 but the outlet is 3 inch, matching a 3 inch pipe to a 2.25 inch pipe is were the rasp will happen, and bad exhaust flow too, get a 350z hr y pipe witch is 2.5 inch all the way through and get custom 2.5 inch piping after the y pipe with some resonators or mufflers, I'm pretty sure those HFC are 2.5 inch all the way as well

You got a lot going on here. I’m not sure what you’re saying. If you’ve installed a resonator recently, just give it time. The volume will come back as the packing material breaks in. Otherwise, one way to get some volume back is to install electronic cut outs. You can push a button and open valves that will make the car loud, then you can close them back up for normal driving

I have a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix and almost every video that I have heard with aftermarket mufflers has sounded very raspy (i personally don't like the sound), either they had stock resonators or resonator deletes(have also had cat delete as well if they have had the resonators removed), I was trying to find some info on how to make it less raspy before I have work actually done(or if I even should), this video helped me out with my decision and I think I will have it done, just need to find some resonators that would fit. If you have any recommendations for some good resonators, just know I don't plan on having the piping completely redone, so the pipe sizes would be about 2in all the way through. Thanks for making this video, very informative. Edit: Would it cause more problems then its worth to have 2 resonators installed if i plan on having dual exhaust?

Not trying to bash but I tried this using a borla mid muffler similar to the one you have in the video and the rasp was still there.even went and added 2 long add resonator and still rasp. Pretty much convince vq decatted is cursed with rasp. (Setup: Berk resonated test pipes~megan y pipe~ borla pro xs mid muffler and had it straight piped out =rasp/ then added resonator at the end aka muffler=rasp)
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 4 жыл бұрын
You kept the y pipe. You're probably hearing rasp from the flex pipe of the megan y pipe. The point of the borla that I have is that it is truly an x pipe. It eliminates the need for a y pipe and has the exhaust flows cross paths, which deadens some of those raspy frequencies at the same time absorbing them into the matting material. There should be minimal rasp left after the borla, but the large resonators at the back--as long as you used decent ones of the correct size--should have eliminated the rest. I would say there are 2 potentials. 1. again would be the fact that you kept the megan y pipe with the garbage flex and didn't use a borla x muffler. or 2. Your car isn't actually that raspy but you've never experienced a truly raspy vehicle to know what is bad and what isn't. Yes, the vq with test pipes is raspy. However, I, along with the dozen or more people now at this point that have copied my setup, do not have any (or very very little) rasp.

They do not help with rasp at all. The resonators are too small to have any impact. They can potentially reduce drone slightly, but that’s the only value to them.

So I have RTPs and an Invidia Q300... volume and tone are pretty good, but there's still some rasp getting through which I don't like. The only resonators on the Q300 are after the cats - so an unresonated X pipe. I'm asking based on your setup with the Borla X pipe and the Flowmasters near the end - do you think a better spot to add resonation would be with a resonated X pipe or with two inline resonators before the mufflers? That setup is so nice that, as you proved, resonated vs unresonated TPs or HFCs hardly make a difference. Only other thing is I'm thinking about switching to HFCs, can I expect those to take care of that problem?
@SpeedCultureStudios

High flow cats will likely knock down the little bit of rasp you have. However, if you’d like to retain the test pipes, some nice resonators immediately after your x pipe would help a great deal.

Hey! I am planning out my custom exhaust build for my 2010 g37x sedan could you let me know how you think this would sound? I am looking for something aggressive and rumbly but not to be shaking everyones house on morning startups. Resonated test pipes into a magnaflow 11386 X resonator into 17930 resonators in place of the oem ones back to just 4" tips with all custom 2.5" piping throughout?
@SpeedCultureStudios

That should sound nice. Very similar to my setup. The magnaflow won’t cut down the rasp as much as my borla does, but should still sound decent. It’ll be aggressive but not overly obnoxious.

Hey, man. So I have the hfc and 1320 y pipe with an aftermarket axleback. I feel that it needs one last touch and the borla mid muffler sounds like that would be it. I did look at your set up of components but I’m not entirely sure which borla pro xs muffler would be the correct fitting for my 1320 y pipe. Would you happen to know? Thanks a ton
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 4 жыл бұрын
If you’re going to keep your y pipe intact you’d have to get a single inlet muffler, with dual outlets. I’m not sure borla offers along those lines but there are options out there. You’d want that single inlet to be 3” to match your y pipe and you’d need to have a 3” flange welded to it so it can bolt up to the y pipe. The outlets you’d want to match your midpipe which sounds to be stock. You could get 2.25” and have the exhaust shop reduce it down to tie into your factory midpipe.

@@SpeedCultureStudios Perfect! So I have a Q40, with a Stillen CBE with Berk HFCs. I'm sort of new to HFCs so I probably should've done some more research, but when accelerating past 3k RPM, the rasp on it is just terrible. I decided to put on a Vibrant Performance bottle resonator (2.25 inlet/outlet 12" long) on the Y Pipe of the Stillen CBE (closest to the HFC). It reduced some of the rasp, but still is present past 3k RPM. Not sure if adding in more resonators towards the mufflers would help or if I need to look into maybe a different type of resonator on the Y pipe.
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 11 ай бұрын
@@OMGooFy vibrant makes good product but those bottle resonators are so smal, they don’t do much for rasp. You can add additional resonators into the system or you can replace the vibrants with larger resonators
@OMGooFy
@OMGooFy 11 ай бұрын
@@SpeedCultureStudios When you refer to larger resonators, are you referring to the length of them? (go with like 14" or 18" if applicable vs the 12") Or are you referring to the actual body width of the resonator itself. I was thinking of maybe adding the additional resonators before the mufflers.
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 11 ай бұрын
@@OMGooFy it can be either or or both. The body can have a larger diameter but often people avoid that because the car is lowered so longer is typically the better option. Like an 18” (22” overall length) is generally pretty good. Like a flowmaster FlowFX. Or Upower. Just make sure the core is perforated and not louvered

Do you get a different sound with an x pipe, over a y pipe? I know since I have a 3.0t that I will never get that deep aggressive sound like my cts v had, but what can I do to my current car, to get the deepest tone possible, so it's not tingy or raspy?
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 4 жыл бұрын
Large diameter resonators help. An x pipe helps to even the tone a bit as well-a resonated x pipe is best. But resonators allow those longer wave lengths (deeper tones) to pass through while they absorb those tinny raspy notes that you’re talking about.
