Actually the tunnel was built in 1894, but widened in 1931 to allow construction of the second rail bridge (the one where the trains featured in this video were running on).

For nearly 20 years I lived in Silver Spring, MD and the train tracks ran behind my apartment building. I would see these trains all the time, day and night. Good thing I love trains. The Metro (subway) tracks ran down the middle as well. Sometimes we would have two freight trains passing in opposite directions with two Metro trains in opposite directions passing behind the buildings. Yes, you get used to it. Train noise was far preferable compared to the jet airplane noise I lived with in Rosslyn, VA with the planes coming down following the Potomac River to land at National Airport.

The “ambiguous triangle” math problem spray painted above the tunnel.

That doesn't appear to be a spray-painted triangle. If you'll look closely, you'll see what looks like netting used to prevent rock debris from falling. The "triangle" is actually a cable stretching from each side of the netting to form a "V" shape where it attaches to the wall above the archway. The other "legs" you see are shadows of the cable.

@@davidvogel6359 I guess it depends on what the question was about. the large black curved areas on the bottom of the cars, in the space between the wheels (in the same area where the engines' fuel tanks are) are just extended volume of the cars capacity. The small "tanks" at the ends of the cars are air tanks.

@@BaltimoreAndOhioRR Oh, ok I missed seeing the tanks at the end of the cars. Nice video by the way. When I saw the end of the coal car it looked like the auto train and the coal train wouldn't fit through the tunnel together but it was just the angle of the still shot. I said to myself oh oh there's going to be a crash! I have seen all three of the Union Pacific steam engines. I have seen them sitting on display and under power. The last one was the Big Boy 4014 in Des Moines Ia and Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri. You just can't imagine or describe how big they are but when they go by you and the ground shakes, WOW.
