EGR-System does not reburn the exhaust gas contrary to popular belief. Instead the exhaust gas is being rerouted back into the cylinders through the intake ports and it mixes with the intake air taking out some of the oxygen being sucked in, through which the combustion temperature is being lowered and ultimately the NOx emissions are being lowered. Also the Atkinson cycle engine does not reuse the exhaust gas, but it rather lets the intake valves open for a lot longer even though the pistons are already in the compression stroke, this allows for the engine to reach higher expansion ratio during the combustion from the much lower dynamic compression ratio which in term allows for higher efficiency. Those engines usually have a very high mechanical compression ratio for a petrol engine, but of course it is lowered through the intake valve timing. Either way, your videos are very interesting, keep up the good work. 😁

the headgasket problems are caused by either a failing electric waterpump (I replaced mine while it was still in good condition at 230k km's), or a clogged EGR and intakemanifold. Because of this not every cilinders gets the same amount of fresh air mixed with exhaust gasses from the EGR. This causes the 'death rattle'. An important factor is clogging up the EGR is oilconsumption. An oilburning engine produces a lot more carbon, clogging up the EGR and intakemanifold fast. As a preventative matter I change my oil every 10k km's and every 80k km's I clean the EGR and intakemanifold. It's quite a job but for me it pays off. Mine has 236k km's now and burns no oil. With this extra service and maintenance it's a very reliable and durable engine. I think the first Prius's form 2009 - 2013 have the oilburning problems because of the tiny oilcontrolrings. From 2013 they don't burn oil anymore (so I'm told)

Awesome. How exactly are you cleaning the intake manifold? Scrubbing it with a toothbrush?
@one_mega_ohm91399 ай бұрын
While those things certainly exacerbate the issue, the main problem is that the head gasket itself is complete garbage. Single layer, with a crappy coating. Even with water pump and EGR maintenance I bet yours blows by 370k km. They all do eventually. If they used multi layer steel from the get-go then I doubt it would have been an issue.

Everything looked pretty much brand new in that engine. I guess there’s probably a different set of pistons available due to the technical bulletin. With a ring job and a new head gasket, new valve stem seals, send the head to a machine shop to check out the seats and tolerances etc, the engine would be practically brand new. The battery is probably defunct or not much life left. Let’s say you did 7.5k km oil changes instead of the probably recommended 15k km. That is 10 changes on 150k km’s. If you do it yourself that’s about $500 using synthetic oil bought on sale. Over 300k km’s that’s $1000. These extended oil change intervals are penny wise pound foolish.
@speedkar999 ай бұрын

I've had two close family members with the 2ZR Prius. The 2011 had oil changes every 3k miles or 6 months, and never burned a drop of oil at 57k miles. Admittedly, that's really low mileage. It was traded to Carvana during the pandemic for an astonishing amount. The 2012 sticks closer to Toyota's recommended intervals, so they cart around big jugs of oil everywhere they go. Before they knew it was a real problem, at about 180k miles, the car displayed the "low engine oil pressure" warning. She was on the highway and decided to "get to town," and drove for another 20 or so miles! Today, 50k miles later, the thing still runs very well, and still burns oil. Despite the big design flaw, it seems that these still run forever. Perhaps that's because they can motor along on the highway with low oil pressure, who knows.

When I went to buy a used engine to replace it, they were literally $100 a piece. There are so many more wrecked Priuses than there are Priuses with engine problems that the engines sell for scrap prices. There is no greater proof of engine quality than that. It is the terrible engines that are expensive in the used auto parts business. Try buying a 4.7 for a Jeep, or a Subaru engine, or a Ford Triton or Ecoboost. You'll find people fighting over them, because they fail all the time and there aren't enough coming out of totaled vehicles to cover the failure rate.

Its a good engine 500,000km+ if you take care of it
@lukotemihango53949 ай бұрын
so why not only change the head gasket and keep that engine running 🤔
@JohnSmith-yv6eq9 ай бұрын
The rings would have to be replaced with the later modified ones, the EGR would need cleaning out, all O rings replaced, ..the whole teardown, parts and labour exceed the cost of a good used engine. But hey if you do it at home for only parts cost...go for it!
@KennyboyGM9 ай бұрын
The engine is not worth the cost of replacing the head gasket.

@7:45 Wife ratted him out to the Police, he came back after giving his credit card to his wife 😊 Very interesting, not much damage to the Aluminum Engine after 290K Km; I thought those engines were crap. So that engine is done?, even if you change the pistons to better new 1s? You don't repair them? Junk yard?

Don't know why you dis on EGR. It allows engines to run leaner without pinging, and less NOx emissions, so less acid rain. It's a win-win situation.
@speedkar999 ай бұрын
It clogs up and causes carbon issues.
@mannys91309 ай бұрын
When designed properly, EGR systems do not clog up and do not cause carbon fouling. The majority of poor EGR designs have some things in common; poor PCV oil separation, small EGR port passages, and excessive oil burning. The oil mist mixes with exhaust and cokes up the intake. Small passages clog up easier than large ones. Oil burning in the cylinders makes a lot more carbon particulate right from the get-go. EGR is a great thing when executed properly. Placing an PCV oil catch can in the breather line will catch a large amount of the oil mist that would otherwise foul the intake manifold. They are easy to build DIY and very easy to install. Drain it twice every OCI and you're good to go. With today's DI engines requiring walnut blasting every 50-100k miles anyway, it's not a huge conundrum to clean the intake of EGR particulate while it's off the engine. I agree that the reduction in NOx, CO, and unburned hydrocarbons is a benefit well worth the slight complications that may arise. 🤷🏼♂️

On a spark ignited engine the EGR also saves fuel by reducing pumping work at part load.
