Damn he was my janitor at ps.87 when I was in like 5th grade now I'm in college and I'm never gunna get the chance to go back to the school and say what's up to him rip mr earl!!! Thank you for making beautiful music and keeping the school clean and safe for us

"Mr. Earl" Carroll was a huge '50s Rock & Roll star - yet, later as a school janitor in NYC - he NEVER said, "Do you know how famous I used to be?". He showered LOVE on all "his kids" at PS-87. God blessed him with continued success as a top performer on the Oldies Circuit - yet, he remained a beautiful human being, who never let fame go to his head. He stayed true to his love for his kids at PS 87. Bless you, Speedo!

Originally the "CADILLACS" came together as a group in early 1953, as the "CARNATIONS." Hailing from Harlem, NYC, (with the help of manager Esther Navarro) Earl Carroll along with J.R. Bailey and the Cadillacs (vocal group Hall of Fame 2004) went on to record some true "Classic Do-Wopp" records in the 1950s, on the JOSIE record label. Their classic song (done by so many groups over the years) "Gloria" and "Wonder Why" were recorded in 1954. I personally love "Zoom" and "The Girl I Love." In 1955, their most notorious record "Speedo" was released, bringing a large white teenage audience to black rock and roll do-wopp music. In 1959, the Cadillacs were featured in the movie "Go Johnny Go." Despite many line-up changes over the years, the Cadillacs have always been considered a premiere true original do-wopp group, from 1950s NYC. They have always entertained us and were truly loved and embraced in the NY Metro area. Their songs were constantly played on the old "WCBSFM 101.1 FM NYC" radio station. (this was NYC's oldie's station of the past) Earl Carroll was a gentlemen and will be missed by many. He is a true part of 1950s America and will never be forgotten. RIP Earl and J.R. I thank you and the Cadillacs for all the great music and memories you have given us over the years....rock on....

The first two performances of 'Speedoo' & 'Gloria' were on the Clint Holmes' 'NY at Night' show that aired between 1987-88 while the last two performances herein are of Earl & the Cadillacs a few years later on the Harvey Holiday Doo Wop Show which also had Jocko Henderson introducing the Cadillacs as they sang 'Peek-A-Boo' and 'The Girl I Love' with Earl's hair being just a little greyer than in the first two performances!

Back in the 1950's, the Cadillacs were one of the hottest dancing & singing vocal groups in NYC. Others were The Valentines w/Richard Barrett who could dance their asses off on stage, and the Chicago group, The Flamingos, who could capture an audience's respect and love by dancing up a storm such as what they do on 'Jump Children'! And let's not forget the fabulous Bluenotes of the 1950's who could tear the place up with their dance moves! However, Earl & the Cadillacs were the very best!

I LOVE me some Earl Carroll. But does anyone know who's in this lineup ? I know that's the Bob Phillips (far right/tenor), but who is the brother singing bass and the tall brother in the middle ? Speedo continued with this lineup on the PBS Doo Wop specials (the 4 of them ) then we lost Bob Phillips 2011 -. And the group continued as a trio.

Probably so..you have to remember that many of those early groups didn't make millions like the groups of today, so when their careers were over, they had to get regular jobs to survive. I would have been nice if today's entertainers would have taken better care of these legends but.....
