Speedrunning the Slowest Possible Mode in NES Tetris

I was always curious how long it would take to play through a game of NES Tetris from a Level 0 start with no pushdowns. In this video, I found out the answer!

I thought this was gonna be about the SLOWrun that I have done a few times, AKA start at level 0 and take as LONG as possible. My record is 43m39s for a single game

now that makes more sense for a time that I was thinking of. Probably because I was estimating the speed of each piece falling all the way down. I wasn't thinking about the pieces going faster when the stack was high

@@aGameScout Well also, 90% of the game time happens in the first 10 levels, the speed increase is pretty dramatic past level 9.

@@EebstertheGreat Yes. I'm still not sure if there's a level breakpoint where it could be possibly more worthwhile to let extra pieces fall before going to the next level though. Might be worth mathing it out.

Are you sure building up high is the best strategy early on? It does mean pieces don't have to fall as far (which is a big deal), but it also means you spend that much longer on level 0. It seems like the ideal strategy would be to build up 7 or 8 high and then try to reach 10 lines as soon as possible.

​@@aGameScout Until lvl 8, the speed progresses harmonically, so the time required to beat each level should decrease linearly up to that point. The speed increase doesn't feel like much, but that still adds up to a lot of time since you spend so long on those levels.

It's a challenge I came up with that starts as low as level 13. You maintain a perfect stack 12 rows high while trying to score as high as possible on Level 13 or higher, without the stack going below 6 rows. It was inspired by your B-Type 19 - 5 video.

The audio sounds a little different. It sounds like the pulse channels use a 25% duty cycle where they normally use 50%. Is this a modified rom?

At level 1 you should just build up asap, not filling up the whole playing field, for example place as many pieces vertically and leave holes

Every line you build for a clean stack is 2.25 pieces. Tree strat sounds much more efficient, I think.

I like to do a strange category I called “The Floor is Lava.” I stood pieces up to at least 5 high, then tried clearing back to the bottom, but every piece placed must be on top of another piece. (Middle tucking is fine, as long as it’s on top of any unit.)

It's definitely still possible that a top DAS player could win an individual matchup vs a hypertapper, but incredibly unlikely that they could continue to win matchups multiple times in a row, so I would not bet on a DAS player winning CTWC 2020
