Speeduino is moving along brilliantly. Adding a fuel pressure input to help better perform fuel calculations would be a nice touch. Adaptronic made it an important aspect of their recent upgrades. Adding other inputs for safety and data logging, like oil pressure and temperature would also be neat inclusions. And for something a bit 'left field', a 3D programmable servo output would/could be good fun. 1 idea is for variable position valve in the exhaust to help keep unpleasant noises at bay in a high flow, non turbo exhaust. But a bit more adventurous would be adding variable cam timing to engines that don't have it, similarly to how Porsche did their Variocam system. I reckon a servo motor/actuator would be the most practical way to drive the mechanism.
@Speeduino4 жыл бұрын
This has 2 spare analog inputs on it and the latest firmware includes fuel and oil pressure inputs. Fuel pressure currently isn't used for anything beyond logging (Though this will change), but the oil pressure is built into the engine safety system.

Something I would like to see as a tuner is more resolution on ve tables, I’m sure the faster processor can handle it nicely and gain the benefit of fine tuning your car and leaving less room for error.

I've been shopping for a couple of months for a ECU ecosystem for my rally car. Been looking at MS3x, Haltech, and others. As much as a commercial, packaged system is convenient, I'm inclined to DIY and open source. Seeing that the latest update in MS is 2015 is not encouraging. I doubt I'll find noticeably more performance in one system over the other, so affordability, continued development, and flexible is alluring. Seeing Dropbear, and having some experience with Teensy (a BEAST!), I'm excited and hope to have one in my hands soon. In the mean time, I just ordered a regular Speeduino to learn on. Since these are open source, and purchased from a distributor, can you explain how you are encouraged (funded) to keep developing? I would be happy to contribute if it keeps this moving forward.

This is great. Have you considered adding a multiplexing ADC chip to increase the analog inputs? I.e use such a chip to sample the slow relatively unchanging analog inputs like IAT, CTS, FLex Fuel, Batt ref voltage, etc (or like multiple IATs). That way it would free up space for fast changing analog inputs could be directly sampled. Maybe even have a similar MUX digital chip for the D side outputs? Any chance for dual O2 inputs so that bank to bank trim can be controlled?

some friendly advice: -avoid polyfuses (in temp >85C) -add a inductor to limit the current on the input electrolytic capacitor (+ you need a filter :) ) -TCC4424 although they can withstand a few amps, the freewheeling energy is low ( limitation of the die). Also for ignition coils, it's good to monitor the current for dwell time compensation - MOV's are too slow for automotive environment . Better use a 600W TVS + fuse -avoid headers / jumper in "vibrating" environment -try to add a 100nF capacitor for each IC. Add nearby driving IC some small electrolytic capacitor (47..100uF) to have a local buffer - avoid tantals..... MLCC have a improved a lot -consider capacitor DC bias derating (100uF 6.3V used at 5V, will have aprox 60% capacitance) keep up the good work
@Speeduino4 жыл бұрын
There's some great points raised here, some of which have been looked at already, but possibly from a different angle. - Any suggestions for alternatives to polyfuses on a voltage reference line that will leave the unit? - The inductor will certainly help around the capacitor, though I wouldn't say it's strictly required given it's still an LDO at the end of the day. No harm in it though - The TC4424s are only driving a minuscule amount of their rated current, typically well under 200mA. There is current monitoring if driving ignition IGBTs directly from the MC33810s, but I wasn't happy with the gate driver capacity limits from those. - The MOV has already been replaced in the next alpha :) - The headers/jumpers are only for the testing boards, they won't go into production. - Tantalums are such a double edged sword. They're still doing a better job IMHO vs ceramics in this case, but I agree that they certainly come with downsides as well - The caps on the 5v rails are 10v rated, which should be fine unless I'm missing something.
@danielsmd44 жыл бұрын
@@Speeduino I think I was looking at the wrong schematic. (I saw that you used 6.3V capacitors) I was referring to the DC bias derating. For polyfuse replacement, I would suggest using a automotive high-side driver, with current sense output, and use this output as a (adjustable) overcurrent trigger. A example, that I used in the past: AUIR3315. You need to search for a low power version like a SO8 package. If you want to power sensors, and don't care about the current limitation threshold, use a LDO that has a output capable of withstanding short circuit to KL30 (ex TLE4251 ). Tantalums are kind of forbidden in the automotive environment . In my 8 years experience in the field, I never saw/had the need for a tantalum. I would go with a newer technology , like hybrid polymer + if somebody copies the schematic, and uses a tantalum from Aliexpress..... In the schematic that I had (the wrong one) TC4424 are used as Injector drivers (Also don't forget, during load dump, KL30 will go to 27V). The inductor is to protect the capacitor from a sharp voltage rise (ex load dump, weak battery - low internal resistance-> will increase the RMS voltage on KL30 ; when you connect the ECU to KL30 -> capacitor @0V , there is no current limitation ).
@Speeduino4 жыл бұрын
Ohhh not sure which schematic you saw. The TC4424 is a high side gate driver and not something I ever recall using in an injector circuit at all. I've only used them to drive ignition IGBTs or smart coils. Great comments though, appreciate the input!

How's this for a budget option. Only support the following- HALL effect (sensor pulls pin to ground, internal resistor pulls to logic high), 5 volt sensors (TPS, MAP, O2, etc.), resistive sensors (temp sensors), logic level triggered coils (some trigger on logic high, some on logic low), then just some level shifting circuits to go from 5 volt logic to 12 volt for activating relays, IAC stepper motors, transmission solenoids, etc (and of course some decent current capacity grounds for injectors, IAC stepper, etc). From what I've read about Microsquirt setup options, this would cover the majority of LS swaps and the lack of so much extra circuitry would keep cost down. Something like that ready to go for $200 or less (and in my opinion, it doesn't nedd to be aggressively weather proof; I can DIY that for considerable cost saving). Junkyard parts that would be supported (especially like coils) can be swapped on to cars the lack the supported hardware fairly easily and fairly cheaply. www.efisource.com/docs/MicroSquirtHDWManualRS.pdf

Hi Josh, I have a question on the baro sensor.. if you have it inside the enclosure and the enclosure is weatherproof, how does the external atmospheric pressure affect the inside pressure of the enclosure, thereby give any meaningful reading on the sensor? I know baro correction is not important as the other sensors so to speak, but I was just curious.. sorry if the question is stupid.. I'm a noob 😬 And on another note, to reduce the size (length) of the board, could the components be stacked? Like you have done with Arduino/teensy on top of the speeduino board, can't the components be split into smaller boards and stacked on top of each other? For eg, the ignition and inj circuit could be on one other board and it connects with the main board on top of it, side by side with the teensy one.. and 4+4channel board split.. something modular like that could provide options for ppl without need for 8channel.. if needed they can add another set to increase to 8channel...

I don't think you mean analog. The speeduino has digital and analog inputs and outputs. I believe even modern engines will use a mix of digital and analog sensors that are interpreted by the the ECU. I think you mean mechanical. I.e. mechanical distributor. If so, then unless you plan on adding crank/cam sensors and adding coil packs then the ECU will only handle fuel. Which isn't a problem. Unless your saying you have carbs and unless planning on converting the whole lot then this is of no use to you.
