As a fellow car enthusiast (on a budget) and IT guy, this is exactly what I want. I do a lot of tinkering with SBC's, mainly Raspberry Pi's, and your previous video pointed me in the direction of Speeduino and I'm already planning my build. Better yet, being Australian, it's local for me too!

AS someone who has been soldering his whole life and has built several megasquirts id like to pass on that once you finish soldering your board, use a paint brush cleaner to clean the rubbish and flux off the board, then rinse it with clean water and use a hair dryer to dry it out. Then use a good PCB laquer to seal it and prevent it from corroding, many people dont do these things and wonder why they ahve random shorts or faults that start to happen a few months down the track... Hope this helps.

Amazing to see more love for the speeduino project. There are many variants of Speeduino Compatible ECU's also. Josh allowing this to be an open source project has empowered some of us to make our own. For me it started as refining the project for my own car. This gained traction and I now design and sell my own Speeduino Compatible variants.

Just had a look at your store, looks really good! Yeah, I think Josh is a modern day saint, the amount of hours he must’ve sunk into this he’d be well justified wanting to keep it closer to his chest! Yeah, people seem to love the idea and the best thing is the people who always wanted to do this but lacked the money or technical skills to do it themselves now can get tuning... I had to shout about it!

This is a complete game changer for engines like the 1ZZ, which had previously not been economically viable to tune, thanks to the exorbitant price of standalone ECU's, as you could just do a 2ZZ swap for the same money. But now good 2ZZ's are getting thin on the ground, and you can get 3 or 4 1ZZ's for the same price.. well, this just opens them up to all sorts of modifications. Hayabusa throttle bodies, and forced induction spring instantly to mind. Bloody marvelous :-)

Pinned comment!!! Absolutely, using bike ITBs and a Speeduino makes what was (and still is) a £2k project is now a £300 project. If I had to do things “properly” I couldn’t afford to do it at all!

I'm only the first four minutes into this, but I'm delighted to hear it's based off the old megasquirt project. I built a mega squirt, and a test thing for it and everything else and really wanted to use it but... This was early 2000s and it turned out that modifying my engine versus putting in that brand new LS1 motor was the same price, and I dropped that in instead, using the factory ECU and harness. So I never ran my mega squirt on anything but I've always wanted to add fuel injection to all kinds of small engines and I do a lot of Arduino projects so this is just awesome. Looking at this about the only thing I want to change is to get rid of the Arduino and just SMC solder on the processor and everything so it's just one board but... I get it is what it is. Definitely something cool and worth looking into

Im excited for this. I talked to a friend a long time ago about using a raspberry pi, recycled dell optiplexes, and a 3d printed case to make cheap standalone APUs for cars and custom vehicles in general. We also talked about a scan tool that invades a ecu or tcu to monitor and download as much info from a stock unit that would be needed to allow a program to recreate it and upload it to your custom unit. This would allow for true freedom when doing cool builds. Allowing someone to cheaply swap a 6 speed auto into a car that originally came with a 5 speed auto. Has something like that popped up in the market yet? I know nissan was working on a diag tool that did something similar but i left the company that was working with them so im out of the loop now.

I have enjoyed your video quite a lot, your presentation method is entertaining and the information you present is quite accurate for the most part! There's two things that aren't quite it. Early in the video you talked about the different mega2560 board versions and their clock crystals, these clock crystals are for the serial chip, not for the mega, the one with a 12mhz is a ch340g and can be used just fine. The mega with a 16mhz big crystal has an atmega16u2 as it's uart chip and is generally recommended because you can flash a custom firmware on it to make reset behavior more suitable for a car ecu. Both the ch340g and 16u2 equipped boards run at full 16mhz. On my Samurai project I've had issues with random resets caused by voltage spikes which was solved by removing a capacitor that was there to let the ch340 reset the mega. Another thing, you forgot to mention that people should load the speeduino base tune so that all the properties have some sort of a value to prevent any unexpected problems because someone left a cell at -255. Otherwise great work and I'm looking forward to seeing your next video!

I have a couple of Motorhomes, both near the same YM, one is powered by a 350 and the other is as far as I can tell, a 427 industrial or truck version, both Chevy engines both are running Qjets at the moment. Ok so I have a 3rd BBC which I have dumped a $^*t load of money in and still have to dump more into it, it's a 540 which will be a race rig if I live long enough. Anyhow, for the 540 project, I dumped another load of funds into a MS3X with everything needed to run 2 stage fuel and 2 stage N20. COP, SFPI, dual knock sense, RTCC, 2 low impedence injector driver boards, a GPIO for controlling a 4L80E, there's absolutely NO room left in the case for anything else even if DIY made anything else that could be installed. So now I have to spend more for the full version, not a problem, I expected that. Then there is the MSQ file that must be developed, that's a problem for me at this time, I'm going to need some serious support for that. Again, anyhow, I knew a little ( very little and still very little) about Speeduino before starting the MS3X system and now I want to have a go at this to convert both or at least the BBC powered Motorhome first. IMOP I'm thinking this would be a good deal for either engine. Any opinions to offer from anyone?

@@MakingforMotorsport all good mate.. Lol.. its a bit stupid around town, the engine is built for more but I'm limited buy the ecu. I'm using the rom raider software and have reached the limit of what it can safely do. I was going for a link but this is a welcome new option. Cheers

You got me good and proper - I was in the midst of rolling my eyes at the soldering Health and Safety warning. Good advice though, always good to stay hydrated in the workshop Thanks for the video, super informative and covered exactly the bit I was concerned about (uploading firmware and getting the base cal in)

@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport 3 жыл бұрын
The key with the wiring is just get as much knowledge as possible on your current car, and the base tune isn’t that hard, there are several table generators and rules of thumb for advance, these will never be “right” but they can certainly get you running...

I am an ' old school racer ' brought up with Hilborn constant flow fuel injection, and multiple side draft carb configurations. Now I have more time to fiddle around with a project car, an EMS is the way to go Power comes from the cylinder head ( of which I have modified a lot ) and ignition timing. I have collected all the parts for a hack on the GM Aussie VN ECU ( look up PCM hack ) but your EMS seems so simple. Can you program on the fly, and how many boxes in the ignition table ...ta
@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport 3 жыл бұрын
It is simple, honestly, I am not conning anyone, just need injectors that fit and an ignition amp that works for with either 12v or a crank pulley and you’re off! Power does come for the head but spark and squirt always help

I think you know quite a bit about the port air module delivering fuel loads based on constants. That's why you weren't saturated with the incoming MAF temp. I would like to know more about how with the engine hood closed air temp provides a more accurate fuel flow. Cool fuel air is always the best input. I really like the viability of taking a scratch board and making the interface better than the 90's. I wanted to build my own ECU once I understood that changing chips on an older model board cost me a lot of time based on recorded data. I would rather adjust everything then and there aside from a non-it-drive me home burn rate. I'd want to commandeer a carb built in and branch it to multi-port and when no chugga chugga I know that a carb could bypass the gross negligence that I did on my own.

One other thing I thought about is what is being said about the 12mHz crystal. I know from past experience ATmega chips have been over clocked to 20mHz for certain projects. If in this case 12 is a bit slow, and 16 works better, what would wrong with going to 20mHz.

I saw your last video. I have a 1992 Audi UrS4. It had the engine rebuilt and after 8 Grand! On a Aan OBD 1. And not done after 3 years. I had it towed to a quote top notch Audi specialist? Everything this guy said was 1000.00? All I wanted to know was if it had been rebuilt? He took me that it needed a new ECU, battery and it was showing low oil pressure? He said I don't have the tool to remove the oil pressure sensor?. After 2 grand to get it running. Oh if you really want to drive your car. You'll need a new oil pump? It stayed there for a few months. I tried to scrape another 1000. Bucks together. I couldn't. I finally got towed home. The front bumper is missing and the right side cat. And pipe to the exhaust. Now I'm done with these great mechanics. I'm just going to do all the work on my car's from now on. You make great videos that inspire! Thanks again

Thanks for the comment and sorry that you’ve had such a tough time with such a great car! A decent mechanic is worth its weight in gold but an Audi “specialist” unable to remove an oil pressure sensor? That doesn’t sound right. Hopefully you have better luck with it in the future!
