So much of this presentation separates you from the other 99% of us. Autocad work, printing, testing, lathe work, engineering, partnerships for prototyping etc.. Impressive and while haters will hate, you should be extremely proud - this is great work! (not a fan of the rock music during x3 speed/assembly, however).

Correction, a narrowband Sensor can only measure Rich and Lean. It is not sensitive enough to measure an exact Stoichiometric condition. If you look at the voltage output of a Narrowband Sensor, it constantly flickers between 0.1 and 1.0 Volts, viewed graphically it looks very similar to an ECG of a heartbeat. Wideband Sensors are far more advanced, accurate , can measure a Stoichiometric condition as well as indicating how rich or lean the engine is running. Thank you for entertaining and sharing.
@islandworks4 жыл бұрын
Yes this is correct and I tried to explain the general principle. To get anything good for tuning a proper wide band sensor is the best. In my updated engine I’m going for dual units with one on each header.

Amazing "episode"! Sounds super easy when you explain it. Crazy how much more complex 964s were compared to 993s, forgot 996...
@islandworks4 жыл бұрын
Yes now it’s a lot simpler. They were also bound a by having to have some extra emissions features. But really the electric throttle enables a lot of simplification.
@IanOberhotlzer Жыл бұрын
For the throttle body adapter, go for something like nylon if you print to test, the materials you mentioned are high temp but will distort / melt with fuel exposure ( it will get some from waves pulsing fuel back up the intake )
@islandworks Жыл бұрын
Nowadays it’s made out of a nylon version with some additives for rigidity during higher temps.

Interesting setup. I have not seen anybody run gt3 intake with single throttle on a 963/993. Do you have any info on how does it compare to itb setup with gt3 intake on top?
@islandworks4 жыл бұрын
The idle is always always complicated on a highly tuned 964/993 engine. With this setup it will be much smoother and the car becomes more drivable. I have a friend that tunes a lot of these engines and he did one recently with great results saying “electric throttle is the way to go”.

This is super cool... I'd b cautious about a serial system... Subaru owners will tell you how that can end.
@islandworks4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! What would you be cautious about? With good sizing and dual lambdas the pressure loss should be very low and on top of that compensation from the lambdas.
@ranga20504 жыл бұрын
@@islandworks 4cyl Subarus have a nasty habit of leaning out on the last cylinder in the chain, and being overly rich on the first. The 6cyls run parallel 'dead head' rails which seemingly entirely avoids this problem
@ranga20504 жыл бұрын
I don't know how this interacts with a high-powered fuel pump, but I'd be concerned that the drop is always going to be a percentage across the length of the feed, and I'm developing something of a theory around pressure wave timing from the injector pulses.
@islandworks4 жыл бұрын
I had a look at it just now and I know what you mean. If the flow at high power required through the lines is high enough to cause a pressure drop the last cylinder will get less fuel through the injector and could run lean. In the Subaru the lines seem to be very small and I can see this happening. You would have this in any engine is the sizing of the rails is not enough at the flow you are at. Think about a straight 8 which typically runs 1 rail sized for the application. In my case the connecting line between is an AN8 and with dual lambdas as well as I have a fuel pressure sensor. I believe this will run well, and if not the sensors will tell me I have a sizing issue ;-)
@ranga20504 жыл бұрын
@@islandworks if you install extra bungs you can put the sensors in the first and last cylinder primaries to double check. And you're right. Subaru fuel lines typically are around 6mm ID. It's made me super cautious either way... I don't build single bank engines, but the longest chain I'd want on a rail would be 4cyl if I did.
@wshatila4 жыл бұрын
beautiful. what about hp gains with this drop in weight? any idea?
@islandworks4 жыл бұрын
I’ll do some deep dive testing later on. The biggest thing is the simplicity and the drivability you get with an aggressively tuned engine and an electric throttle body.
@wshatila4 жыл бұрын

Looks great! I've been considering some of the ITB kits out there - this has the potential of being a low cost alternative. So the future ECU state for this is speed density with no Mass Air meter? Nice!
@islandworks4 жыл бұрын
Yes the concept you use is the manifold pressure together with the throttle position. You also run it with feedback from a wide band lambda.
@doingcarthings4 жыл бұрын
@@islandworks I'd consider it if the costs are far less than ITBs. I already have a 996 GT3 intake in anticipation of piecing together an ITB setup but this is very intriguing!

I am watching and wondering ...is this video just a posing video or you really cut only one side of resonance valve's tube. This valve must stay right in the middle between two plenums to separate volume in two equal parts. You cut one side and now the valve is off center - so now one side is less volume, than other, different resonance, different torque curve, different everything in low to mid rpm before the valve opens... Very sad
@islandworks Жыл бұрын
That’s what you get when you reuse other parts. The new one I use nowadays is made from scratch with the valve in the middle. Different volumes is not necessarily bad though as it distributes the effect. You test and see ;-)
