Spektrum DX8 - Flaperons - How Does It Work & How To Use Them

A flaperon is a type of aircraft control surface that combines aspects of both flaps and ailerons. In addition to controlling the roll or bank of an aircraft as do conventional ailerons, both flaperons can be lowered together to function similarly to a dedicated set of flaps. Both ailerons could also be raised, which would give spoilerons.
The pilot has separate controls for ailerons and flaps. A mixer is used to combine the separate pilot input into this single set of control surfaces called flaperons. The use of flaperons instead of separate ailerons and flaps can reduce the weight of an aircraft. The complexity is transferred from having a double set of control surfaces (flaps and ailerons) to the mixer.
Many designs that incorporate flaperons mount the control surfaces away from the wing to provide undisturbed airflow at high angles of attack or low airspeeds.
When the flaperon surface is hinged below the trailing edge of a wing, they are sometimes named "Junker Flaperons", from the doppelflügel type of trailing edge surfaces used on a number of Junkers aircraft of the 1930s, such as the Junkers Ju 52 airliner, and Junkers Ju 87 Stuka iconic World War II dive bomber.

I am in the middle of a build and was going to instal flaps on the model. A club member suggested flaperons. Flaps would ad 5 oz to the plane where as flaperons would have no weight penalty.

Narrator keeps saying bi-rudder, di-rudder or dive rudder (don't know which one, any of these words are wrong). The term, I believe, the narrator meant is flaperon to elevator mixing. Without the mixing, the plane would climb more with the activation of more flaperons (while landing). Mixing down elevator with flaperon movement keeps the plane from climbing when flaperons are activated (while landing). Just thought I'd add the clarification to help newcomers to the sport of RC flying.

Just set this up on my new Carbon Z Yak 54 prior to my first airplane maiden flight ever tomorrow. Hopefully it will help with my first landing! :) It was very simple to config, just make sure the aileron servos are in slots "AIL" and "AUX1" on the receiver (i had my right aileron in Aux1 which worked without changes from stock). Then switch on Flaperons in the radio (after just starting up my left aileron went fully down) and it works like a charm!

Good job! I just set the flaperons on my C-47 Dakota from Dynam. 35% flaperons with 12% elevator (take off) and 45% flaperons with 15% elevator (landing) I found that plane gets a little unstable when the flaperons settings goes beyond 50%

Nice video. I wanted to ask. The numbers you used in your flap system setup, are they specific to your larger 3D plane, or can they be used in most planes. I am getting a 1M Kunai glider. Will those numbers work on that?

Not sure Sir. I have a 1.3m ws Decathlon with almost 50° flap angel but aileron still works great.

Great Video..! concerning the servos termination in the RX..could you please send me the configuration? do i have to you Y-lead as usual or one servo for AUX1 and other for Ail ? i tried both and they still works as ailerons..! please help.

I’m having a problem: when I control my flaperons as ailerons, they go in the right direction. But when I control them as flaps, they go in opposite directions instead of the same direction. I. e. one down one up

If you use a y cable for ailerons you can't use flaperons. You need to use one aileron on Ail ch and the other ail on aux1. Make reverse changes in flap settings to get rudders to move the right direction

Do you have the servos hooked up in a Y-cable, or individually in a receiver channel each?

Vinayak Singh if im understanding you right. If you use a 4ch receiver you want be able to do flaperons. Cause you need two channels for aileron. So tve smallest receiver you can use is a 5 channel sir

@@ArcticRc Thank you for your reply and for your video. I tried setting up my Apprentice S 15e with the Flaperons setting and I pretty much figure it out with the help of your video. Only thing about it was it through off the R-AIL off on the gyro. If it wasnt for the flaps the plane would have been in pieces. I have a DX8 I tried your experiment with flap around and the flat bronze work on my jewelry switch which has three positions so I set it up so that flap around would come down 60% 80% and then 100% the only problem is is when it’s executed the right air Laurent goes up the left all around goes down into flat mount I’ve tried everything and I mixed different settings and I do use the air around with a mix of elevator and writer as a stick control mix so I don’t know how to get without screwing that up how to get to the point where I can say OK only only on This switch will the air Laurent be reversed if I’ve tried that method already what happens is then it reverses my stick control let me know what you think thank you

Grenge g Hi Sir. these servoes are a bit noisy but strong Digital 12kg. the reason they make noise is that they correct to the center all the time. If there is a bit resistance in the rudders they will make more noise. servoes are powerHd
