Ah but the far sighted subway built in Clapp's time has gone. So instead of passengers coming up in the middle of the platform next to their train we are back to a long walk from the "head end" Just as it was more than a century ago. Such is the march of "regress".
@125sloth4 жыл бұрын
@@smitajky Exactly. The "new" Spencer Street of the 1960's and 70's was much more user friendly than the ugly looking monstrosity of today. And they still can't get communication right to passengers today when trains are changed from the original platforms they were to leave from. The PA system is almost third world. And calling the station "Southern Cross" is one of the biggest wankfests I have ever heard. Personal opinion.

“Think of the paralysis of intellect that gave that idea birth”. Mark Twain "Now comes a singular thing: the oddest thing, the strangest thing, the most baffling and unaccountable marvel that Australasia can show. At the frontier between New South Wales and Victoria our multitude of passengers were routed out of their snug beds by lantern-light in the morning in the biting cold of a high altitude to change cars on a road that has no break in it from Sydney to Melbourne! Think of the paralysis of intellect that gave that idea birth; imagine the bowlder it emerged from on some petrified legislator's shoulders."

@0:51 This is called the State Line or Internal Boundary and a "Border" is referred to an International Boundary between two countries.....
@johnpro28476 жыл бұрын
Maybe ..however it was always called the Albury -Wodonga border. State line & internal boundary are definitions not normally used in Australia.
@medullaoblongata96705 жыл бұрын
It was always called the NSW/Victoria border, right or wrong that’s what people called it. As a frequent interstate traveler the term ‘State Line’ was or is never used. Maybe in the US and perhaps as a technically correct geographical reference, however not here in Australia.

1961? Really? I thought it was much older than that. Its now Australia's best railway station without a doubt. I prefered the old Spencer Street station when we went in early december c 1980-85 to book our tickets for the Overland to Adelaide for Xmas holidays. Back then it had 14 platforms, now there is 16, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, 7A, 7B, vety confusing.

The Narrator mentioned something incorrect when he was commenting on the first trains to travel right through on the standard gauge line. Or did he? Let's see how many people know what really happened in 1962.

Brian Sloth My little cousin was born in 1962, and that really happened. She’s been on a few trains too!
@125sloth4 жыл бұрын
@@medullaoblongata9670 No the narrator actually said "early next year", meaning 1962. Yes it was 1962 as you say, but not "early" , because passenger trains did not start until April. I guess people can argue if April is "early" in a year, but I would argue it is one third into the year. haha. Oh how pedantic of me. I am familiar with the history as I worked on all standard gauge trains to Albury and Sydney from early 70's.
@johnd88923 жыл бұрын
@@125sloth listen again, the goods service started straight through in 3rd January 1962. So early in the year. Listen again this states the date for the goods and passenger service being different. The more important and far greater tonnage of the goods service starting first. Goods transhipment being a much greater issue than subsidised passengers walking across a platform at Albury. So not impressed with your admitted pedantry as it is wrong.

Very sad back in old time the train rail was made by muscle and blood. That's the forerunners established the foundation of Melbourne Metro line. Now we got better instruments and mega tools to produce Metro Tunnel projects since 2019. It would be a mission impossible in 60s. Too hard to slow to make a miniature tunnel by hands......STF......

Used to love going to flinders st underground the dunnies cost 2 cents to get in ,if your small young you can get under the doors and do your thing, as long as you dont get caught, but they did have massive lines for blokes to piss in long lines of pisssing lanes, lol :) those days are gone now, all re done, but used to get on platform 10 i think which was the port melbourne line and platform 11 was the st kilda line and the old red rattlers and first class and also 2nd class and then the blue and gold stripped trains, then the silver futuristic trains, wish they put the old red rattlers back in service and the old ticket stubs as well.:) Also spencer st station had a 1/4 scale D class locomotive sitting there and it was perfect for little kids to go inside the drivers seat and look out of it. :) also the massive mural on the wall as well. :)
