Seiko’s Slide-rule chronograph. My favorite 6138 model. Real vs Fake Spotter’s guide - “what good looks like”.
These beauties are so cool that someone made a extremely faithful fake that was so good & so accurate that when they first appeared 2010~ish they fooled even top-tier collectors. I had all three of my slide-rules out, each looking similar at first glance, but not close up. So let’s get close and look at my favorite 6138 model.
PSA: This video contains sub-optimal levels of editing, usually none. We have zero script, no planning, no real editing, nothing. Same for the sound - I forgot my microphone so if you can hear anything count that as a win. Even if that "anything" is tuneless humming. I did pump up the volume though. YMMV if you choose to blow part of your life on this. No Refunds. Enjoy!

I have only held one of these in the metal and what a watch. I serviced and restored it for a client and it is so unique. The inner bezel ring appears to be machined onto the case with the insert added later. You definitely see the influence from the Yachtsman case or visa versa. The inner gasket on the outer ring gives the resistance to the outer ring during rotation as I recall. You just do not see these models in the wild any more. Thanks for sharing. John S

:) Just went to a clock maker with my Pulsar 2001 Quarts, the glass was starting to loose bits of glass. The clock maker replaced the glass, oiled the stem, and checked there were no glass splinters on the watch face, cost me €15,- , "pre-war prices we call that. Now it looks almost as new again, bought the watch last april, on the Kings day fleamarket for €5,-, got a NATO to go with it, the bracelet was way too short as is often so with Asian watches. So Now got me a nice watch for €20,- Watchmaker has been working here in town for 40 years, same small shop, one of the last ones I fear.. The last of the Watch Mohicans...

I have a UFO that I bought about a year ago. I knew it wasn't original because it has an orange hand on the hour register. Also the dial, crystal, and bezel were all like new. The case had a few scratches, so it has a lived-in look. The problem I have with it is that I found that the sub dial hands and the chrono hand were not resetting to zero. One day the hour register hand actually fell off. I always thought that the reset button took a bit too much force to activate and thought it may have caused the problem, but I uncased the watch a couple of weeks ago and found that the hands are just not a snug enough fit and what was happening was that when you reset, the hands move around on their shafts. What is the best way to tighten those hands.

You can’t definitely see the difference between the stamped and etched case back. It reminds me of that faked Blue Pogue that had the faked caseback. Clearly, I’m still fuming about that one! I wonder if that one was an etched caseback too.
