I found you a month or two ago, right after watching Digging the Greats’ 4 week iPod series. Watched a handful of other people’s videos on why they made the switch to DP and iPods. Maybe I’ve secretly been a Philistine for a while but nonetheless I’ve had a great phone addiction since… basically the days when I got one. After a weekend that totally almost put me off the grid I felt better than I had in over a decade. When the birds sang outside, I felt like a Disney character who wanted to join in instead of grabbing the nearest stone. (Ok, that’s extreme but you get it.) I really like when you go into your philosophy behind things and how it affects your real life and the way you see the world. I’ve got an iPod now, and currently I’ve been debating which phone I could switch to. Here’s to reclaiming my mind, life and energy. ❤

Listening to a whole album in a single sitting really is a nice way to relax. Particularly the classics. Ive found myself buying albums even if i like just one song, and slowly liking the rest as they play a role in the wider picture if the album.

I've been doing the same thing with my music but with the MiniDisc format. I use a stereo unit at home and a portable player for when I'm out and about. The discs are small, the sound quality is great, and I like customizing my discs with labels to make the music more personal. They're also rewritable, so I can reuse the same discs over and over.

Remember when we had to buy entire albums and listen to all the non-singles? I feel like with streaming it focuses mostly on the singles which is like 10% of the music of the artists. I remember when my favorite songs were all of the unknown songs that no one really listened to (and I didn't care), but nowadays I feel like I listen to more mainstream music because the recommendation algorithm is a bit more suited to what's popular.

They make it seem like it’s a necessity when it’s not. I want to go back to iPods and BlackBerry phones or the slide phones with a keyboard. I’m tired of the endless advertisement bombardment and the constant need to be with your phone at all times. I want relationships, communication, and to be in control of my time and money. Thanks for sharing your tips and helping us to see the other side of things!

Yeah I have been doing a lot more digital and DRM free music buying over physical these days, just to eliminate physical clutter, but I have a core collection of fav albums on vinyl, and that’s my physical fix for now. I bought an iPod Classic back in February of this year for $40 (60gb model) from 2005 that was marketed as the first iPod to play videos, so it's got a bit of chonk to it which I love. I've used this device every day since I got it for the last 6-7 months and I have never looked back. Immediately unsubscribed from Spotify, starting buying my music, and realized not only did it sound way better but it was also immensely satisfying AND I'm saving money. I still consider it the best purchase I've made this year. Absolutely love my iPod.

I always listen to music while working out, but I found myself starting to write people or scroll social media during my breaks between sets. Making those breaks way longer and my overall experience to train bad. Now with only bringing the iPod my workouts are focused and I also started listening to music and albums more focused. This is such a journey and I love seeing stories like yours on KZbin. Cheers mate :)

I'm lucky to own an iPod classic 5th gen 30 GB and touch 4th gen 8 GB. I realized that I don't really need to have all my music collection with me when I'm outside the house, so I create several playlists to upload. Doing this, I find that I am having fun selecting what songs to put on the iPods, creating themes with the playlists, and even uploading cover art on the playlists. Also, I haven't totally abandoned Spotify, I just don't pay for a subscription. I still find it useful to keep up with my favorite artists when they release new music and check out new artists. If there is something I like, I can just buy it and add to my collection.

"If you're an avid music listener, why would you pay for music you don't own?" is definitely one of my upsides of using iPods. Any song you like can just be removed from streaming at any time and you have no say in the matter. I also gravitate towards the same playlist of metal songs over and over again. I have to be in a certain mood to want to go looking for new music. I've been building up my CD collection as well and it looks nice on my shelf. Artists also get paid next to nothing via streaming so buying CDs compensates them much more. I love using cabled IEMs and with those you're not gonna have to throw them away someday. There's no battery in those so you can just keep them and run them for as long as you look after them. As Dank Pods has talked about several times good headphones from the 70s are still really good headphones today. Headphones don't go out of date, so getting a good high quality of headphones makes everything you plug them into sound better, and they'll last for decades and decades. I've been in the iPod/cabled headphones camp and I doubt I'm gonna switch back anytime soon. With the way big tech companies are acting these days I'm getting away from smart tech, streaming, and hosting data on servers. I want more control of my content and especially music as an avid power & symphonic metal enjoyer.

I've been working on building a decent offline music library for months now and am making good progress. For me, the idea is to hopefully move towards fully cutting the cord from music streaming services as I've been a Tidal customer for a few years now but simply can't rely on it to consistently work. I want a big library on my PC which is also backed up in the cloud which I can just store either in it's entirety or in chunks across multiple devices. I do like the simplicity of streaming my music, the algorithm lead music discovery and having access to so many songs. It's just not working well for me sometimes and I'm longing to just be able to properly own my music again.

I am an oddball in this area. The one thing I have that most don't when it comes to streaming is iTunes Match. Essentially, for $25 a year, I can have my ENTIRE music library synced to my mobile device, other computers, etc. So everything I own is available, on my phone. It is nice to have, but I also find myself listening to things on spotify and paying for premium. I own 2 ipod video 5.5s, the good ones with all the features and the best DAC, but neither work. I think I might want to rebuild one, up the storage and have it around to listen to when the power is out, or even connect it to my car to listen to through the Bang and Olufsun system.

I still buy music every couple of months because I occasionally DJ for small events, but I'm very selective of what I add to my collection. I'm currently down to about 27k songs from 50k. I got an iPod Classic (5th gen) from an eBay auction this month after not having had an iPod since I got rid of my iPod Nano (7th gen) and having majorly listened to music on my iPhone with either my personal music collection or KZbin Music, and so far, it’s been doing me a ton of favours with the authentic music-listening experience and without much distractions. But since it’s still running on an old 30GB hard drive and the battery has been declining with age, not to mention that I want to make it look even more modern, my goal is to modify it with higher iFlash/SD card storage, a new battery, a new design, and maybe even RockBox.

This means that even if you paid for a service or "buy" music online, companies can really take it away from you if they wanted to. Therefore I had always made an effort to own my media be it physical or digital. I own personal digital mp3s, AACs and FLACs music catalogue in my Walkman and laptop, and cassette tapes that I recorded for my Walkman TPS-L2. My dad owned turntable and music records so I can use that too. People should really own their stuff instead of streaming aka borrowing from companies.

I've never thought to calculate my spotify expenses before. Turns out i've spent just under $1500 CAD.
@EggTamago73 ай бұрын
For context: I'm an album listener, and I always have been. I hate the radio, usually don't care for any algorithmically generated playlists I encounter, and only really listen to songs outside of an album context when I'm making myself a mixtape-style playlist (a habit that harkens back to when I was a kid and needed some way to condense my favourites from several albums onto a cassette for listening to on the go). I went through an exercise a while ago - I looked at every album I added on Apple Music since I started using it when it launched, filtered out everything I added on a whim but didn't really listen to that much (ie. "I love this album and still listen to it regularly" is the bar for inclusion), and calculated how much it would cost me to just buy each of those albums outright on iTunes (averaging it to $10 CAD per album). I don't recall the exact number anymore, but it was just shy of $20k, or a full order of magnitude more than I spent on an Apple Music sub in the same amount of time. So... by the numbers, streaming has been very good for me. It's also really encouraged me to check out genres I never bothered with in the past, and has definitely broadened my tastes for the better. But, I'm here for a reason - there are things I miss about "The Olde Ways". I do like how needing to buy an album just slowed things down and let me spend more time on each album. It all just felt a bit more special back in the day. I'd spend my allowance almost entirely on a new CD or two every month, and I really made sure to enjoy them. In the early 00s, I had a 5 CD changer, and those albums were what I listened to at home. I also had a MiniDisc player with more or less the same stuff on a MiniDisc to listen to on the go. Even when I got an iPod and had access to my entire collection at all times, that habit remained, because the UX was very neutral and didn't try to push me towards listening to anything in particular. I just spent a lot of time with those albums. Now, I frequently find myself forgetting I'd added something I absolutely loved but only listened to maybe once or twice. I still have a separate folder on my HDD full of the music I actually own and plan to give my old iPod some love (and a storage upgrade) so I can load it all up on there again. But, at the same time, I can't deny the upsides of Apple Music, and I know that's not going anywhere for me. So, personally, mixed feelings lol.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I agree with you honestly - I think there’s pros to streaming/renting and also ownership, and it doesn’t have to be exclusively one or the other. @@spencers-adventures Yeah, I mean what I like about your channel in general is that it prompts people to actually just think about this stuff. Kind of that whole "intentionalism" sub-genre of minimalism, I guess. I could see just like buying the odd album/song outright being cheaper and/or more satisfying for a lot of people. iPods are definitely in, and even if people don't switch to them full-time again, clearly there's a reason for the renewed interest (beyond just nostalgia) - it's worth examining why and what they offer.

So after watching a few of your vids and Digging The Greats, I finally bought a iPod Classic 160GB and noticed the difference in my life which was great.. but one downside.. Or am I missing something in the settings or even the track settings directly on iTunes?
@spencers-adventures3 ай бұрын
The distortion sounds bad on the iPod? That’s odd - perhaps it’s a setting issue? I have cranked RATM on there and never found any issue with the heavier stuff. Yeah that CD collection was mine! It was either Number of the Beast or Van Halen’s 1984 that was the first CD I ever bought
@thektalks1903 ай бұрын
@@spencers-adventures I know it's really weird and gets weirder.. So at first I thought it was an issue with my Sennheiser Momentums which I was using with their provided cable. Then I switched to my Heavys headphones which, as the name suggests are geared to more of a metal type sound. That seemed to sort the issue with the distortion (a little bit) but then added a lot of reverb on non-metal tracks.. Whereas the Sennheiser was great for stuff like Soul, Funk and most 60s-70s stuff. Now in the car.. even tracks from Kings Of Leon and The Killers with a tad of distortion/overdrive just sound really high pitched but if I played the same tracks via my phone, they work fine. Not giving up just yet. I remember back in the day using JVC Gumys with my iPod nano and first iPod touch. So going to try those and then maybe the ones you suggested in your video. Also remember playing with the EQ on iTunes back in the day, so going to try that too. Ok your first CD whether it be Number Of The Beast or 1984 was definitely better than my first.. which was Avril Lavigne's The Best Damn Thing (although some good tracks for nostalgia..)

I keep wanting to cancel Spotify, which is £16.99 a month (Duo plan) and instead just buy the songs I like on an individual basis. Amazon and iTunes both have pretty much every song ever for 99p each. I too use my liked songs as my main playlist, which has about 60 songs, plus add in any other miscellaneous songs, brings me to about 100 all in. I could realistically cancel Spotify, splash out £100 buying all the songs I am likely to listen to, then buy new ones as and when I want them. Even 10 new songs a month would be a saving, plus id own them, plus I wouldn't lose access to all my other songs if I didn't pay any money that month. Im also considering buy an old external CD drive for my Mac to rip all my old CD's in the loft. Why won't I cancel Spotify? Well, to drop down to a single plan (which my wife would use) only lowers the price by about £3, meaning that for £3 I don't have to worry about the hassle (When technically, Im actually halving the full cost with her, its a technicality but I'm allowing it haha) really should cancel it soon though..

Spotify sounds awful

The problem with Spotify -- even if it's free -- is that you'd have to keep relying on the Internet to use the service. Using an iPod means you don't have to rely on the Internet when you want to listen to music. Sometimes disconnecting from the Internet is necessary and healthy for you.

@@lilPopper When I had spotify I relied on locally stored files cuz what happens when you lose signal for a second? There goes your listening experience. Switching back to MP3s (like the old days when I was broke and didn't have a job) and CDs is way better. I need to get some Beyond the Black CDs at some point to compensate them as I love this band. I listen to this band a lot.

Not ipod, but a tiny mp3 player jolike m5, and it has exact same advantages as ipod, plus bluetooth , it's just satisfying to listen to it while waiting for the bus, walking or just chilling
