I do love retrofitting older tech to more modern standards and/or compatibilities. my car is from 2005, so it's from that awkward phase where bluetooth or aux input weren't common but cassette decks were rare to find, and therefore doesn't have any native way to interact with pretty much anything but a CD. I installed a new head unit that allows for android auto or carplay and it's really quite a big quality of life improvement. sure it looks like a hacked-together mess but having a GPS and streaming music is pretty nice. in a similar vein, I've seen people add wireless charging coils to Nintendo Switches, using bluetooth dongles for ancient headphones, and then there's the wealth of upgrades available for Gameboys. hell even cfw for the PS3 and Vita probably count as adapting them to the current age. there's some cool projects to be done in this retrofitting space and I'm glad people are interested in maintaining, repairing, or improving what they already have (or more likely giving life to something they bought second-hand but I digress).

I’ve got a late 2006 5th gen slim with a classic faceplate and a 3,000mah battery. It also has 256gb storage (1 sd card, I’m not sure why you’d use the quad for low capacity when the solo is cheaper and easier) and taptic. Really it’s to a point where it could be a modern product, the specs are more than enough for my everyday use. BTW, the scroll wheel is an issue with replacements, I’ve had a few with this issue. You’re better off buying refurbished ones that put new plastic on the old pcb. The only thing I’d say it’s missing is the diymod. Maybe wireless charging, but I hardly ever have to charge it anyways. You can retheme rockbox to look just like the stock software, and tons of other stuff. There’s hundreds of themes, I can’t imagine not using rockbox with your flac files just because the default theme is bad.
@lysolan2692 ай бұрын
The Quad is smaller and makes modding Thinner models w/ bigger batteries possible. Think people say it is basically required to use a Quad if you're putting like 3,000mah in a Thin model

As someone who tried desperately to get Rockbox as close as possible to the look of the stock Apple OS, it's just not the same. Nowadays if I were to consider jumping back into Rockbox I think the best usage is for someone who doesn't care about it mimicking the stock OS.

So I understand why people had gripes with iTunes being required. I really do. But what I don't think people fully grasp is the things that iTunes can do that a drag and drop file browser-type experience can't. Smart playlists being the most obvious. But there is a single checkbox which is absolutely *critical* to me, and not even the open source iTunes alternatives support it. You can set a song to "Skip when shuffling". It's a godsend for interludes, outtakes or other such tracks that makes sense in the context of an album but NOT as an individual experience. Also, two features added with the release of the iPod shuffle: 1 - you can have it automatically downconvert your tracks to a lossy (or lower bitrate) format, which is helpful for lower-capacity iPods like a Shuffle or a nano. But another thing it can do is fill the device with randomly selected music until it is full, which is another amazing feature that works well for shuffles or nanos when your library is too big to fit.

Cool video! I love my iPod, thank you for doing it justice. FYI, Rockbox is very themable. There are themes like iRB_Video/Classic for imitating the original SW; and iRB_Modern/Interpod for an interface closer to the modern Apple Music app. The only thing that really took getting used to is the database export/imports and the clickwheel changes-- but I got used to them pretty fast. Plus, no iTunes is needed; you can load FLACs onto it, as if it were a USB drive.

I actually had the same issues with backplate screw tolerances and my bottom plastic charging point bracket is now only held in by the other components pressing against it. The iPod is also great device for listening to music while working since it doesn’t have all the distractions of a cell phone.

I spent a fair amount of money at the time on the 2nd gen iPod touch 32GB in 2009, only took a couple of years before it could no longer get any iOS updates then Apple gradually stopped all its services first the KZbin app then Weather, iTunes then the App Store (which basically was useless as the iOS was too old anyway). I can still play internet radio on it and obviously play music, but it’s felt like a battle against apple to keep it a usable device (I use it on an old dock as a music player/radio in my bedroom). A tech company wouldn’t get away with lack of support nowadays.

the ipod touch 7th gen is probably the best ipod to be made, especially as a heavily upgraded ipod instead of a dumbed down iphone. it has infinitely faster storage, internet access for streaming services (along with offline listening) a higher game selection instead of brick/solitaire, better way to browse music (which you still can own! apple music supports songs from iTunes that you either bought, or brought into iTunes) with the ability to see songs coming up and rearranging them. plus, the iTunes Store is available on device instead of using a PC to sync

I don't listen to music on my PC, TV, or even from my phone.... I have 2 iPods, one Touch & one Classic... Honestly the best way to use is to just do random play or create the playlist for listening. I would connect my iPod touch via hotspot & stream from SoundCloud if I want to hear the latest stuff. but for the most part most newer music suck & the songs I've collected over the years are going to be the ones I stick with the most on repeat, so a single use device like an iPod makes sense for me.
