In the early 1963 and 1964 I spent a couple of summers up there. My friend Cynthia’s mom & dad owned the local gas station, the motel, the lodge on the hill and the Hilltop orchard. Their family had sheep on acres of land. We did part-time jobs as summer-work, and I stayed in the ‘big house’ with their family of 2 boys and 1 daughter. We got to drive an old Ford around the property. I met Cynthia in Chilliwack High School. Her parents sent her to Chilliwack to live with her aunt and uncle, and to attend school. We lost touch after high school as she returned to Spence’s Bridge, worked in the coffee shop and later moved to Merrit. I went to UBC in Vancouver to continue my education. I came across your video while I was looking for photos from the old days!

I was just there last week. You should have checked out Murray Falls. Five minutes down a dirt road that goes under the bridge; then a ten minute scramble up the path you see on your right, and you'll find one of the most stunning falls this side of the Rockies.

We ran out of time! Tried to head over there, but got turned around and wasn't sure if we were heading in the right direction. Will try again next time we head through there :)

Wonderful, as always. As a child Spences Bridge was one of those places we'd pass through traveling up to Prince George, and I never really thought about it too much until I was much older.

Small towns fascinate me. I'm not sure I could live there, but I enjoy visiting - They are full of character :)

That was super interesting - great video! Its nice to learn about a place that we drive through so often (I also know someone named Spence whose family is from there). We always make fun of the Baits Motel 😂

Love your local videos. Been through these places so often yet I did not know the history. Thank you for all your research.

Thanks! Recent travel restrictions have given me lots of time to explore close to home!

Great video. Beats the heck out of looking only on Google maps. I highly recommend the book “ The Widow Smith of Spence Bridge by Jessie Ann Smith Her personal recollections if her life in BC is a fascinating account for those who love our local history.

I grew up here, they didnt mention that the building beside the Inn is the community hall, its to the left when your facing the hotel main enterance. Well the larger building beside the in. It would have been ncie if they went down the Merit highway a bit and shown the arbor :)
