Stumbled across your channel tonight. With tech stuff, I'm sort of like the ol' 4 gated horse... fart, start, stumble, & fall. So I subscribed, too. Enjoyed the video. 13 sets of shoes is a long day. Your joy in your work reminds me of The Hoof GP aka Graeme Parker, over in Scotland. (I probably didn't spell his first name right but I tried. 😊) His last name was easy, it happens to be my second Great Grandson's first name. 14 years to practice spelling it correctly does help.😊 Love seeing the horses. Across the pond, over the hill, or around the bend... By definition, I love all things with 4 legs & hair. Have a wonderful day & I will catch up on your videos shortly. The hot shoeing process is so interesting to see, not something our farriers in the rural western U.S. even offered. Our horses would definitely have gotten cheeky or fidgety about it, which is putting it nicely (in cowboy vernacular they would have "thrown a sh** fit").

For a possible future KZbin installment, I would enjoy hearing a conversation between the two of you about being an apprentice and a mentor in the farrier profession. Here are some of my questions. 1. How is an apprentice “spotted” or chosen? T-Did you apply? What was your strongest “selling point” to Sam? 2. S-What did you see in T that qualified him? Any concerns that T has disqualified in the course of his work? 3. T-Where are you in your apprenticeship? Beginning? Middle? End? 4. S-What does T do really well? What’s his biggest challenge. If you reflect on your own apprenticeship, how are the two of you the same? Different? 5. T-Of the many things Sam has taught you, what stands out as being the most significant in helping you learn the craft? In building your self-confidence? 6. T-Did you grow up around horses? If not, has it been a serious disadvantage? Did you have to get over any fears or any sense of intimidation? (By the horses, not Sam!) 7. S-How many apprentices have you had? Are they all still in the profession? Any women? 8. T-Will you have to pass any exams at the end of your apprentice-ship? If so, are they both written and demonstrative? 9. For both-Any serious injuries as a result of your work? 10. T- Does Sam ever cuss or are we just getting the “sanitized” version of his commentary? And on and on and on. Thanks for considering the possibility.

Lovely to see a farrier with so much patience! I had a 12.2 pony at a school being broken in, the farrier was calling so I asked if he could just give her a trim whilst he was there. The horses before her had been real handfuls then came her turn. I told him that she had a quirk that when you picked her feet up she always gave one tiny pull against you on each foot and that was it. He walked up to her, picked up her front foot and she gave her slight pull back like I said, he immediately dropped her foot and smacked her full force underneath her ribcage with the full length of his rasp! I swear the little thing raised completely off the floor, she was a 4 yr old 12.2 Welsh section B, a real lightweight daisy cutter show type. I absolutely lost my 💩, if I’d have had anything in my hand he’d have had it across the side of his head. He just shrugged his shoulders and walked away, the barsteward! If he did things like that when owners were there what the hell was he doing when they weren’t. I swear the pony was never the same being shod after that and who can blame her! Unfortunately at the time there was an EXTREME shortage of farriers so they could pretty much do what they liked, turn up, not turn up with no warning you name it and people had to just put up and shut up because there was nobody else. I’ve been without a horse for about 10 yrs now after having spinal surgery so hopefully things have changed.

When I saw some of the horses not so cooperative when fitting their shoes and they yanked away several times, a few reasons come to mind. Horses may not like the sound and feel of something bashing their leg. They might feel tired standing on 3 legs. The farrier may be twisting their leg at uncomfortable angle. Or the horse has an innate sense and just don’t like the farrier etc. The horse is a strong animal and the farrier using sharp tools or red hot metal. If the horse jerked, either the farrier or the horse could get seriously hurt. So the farrier will have to be very patient to allowe the horse to calm down. And I just thought, not all farriers are kind temperament like Sam & Tom, ill intent farrier who had a bad day can easily lash out at the horse. Having read your comments just confirmed my thought and feel bad & 😡😡😡. Totally feel for you and your horse. You can’t report him to police. Law is not sufficient to prosecute the bastard etc etc. And you are completely helpless.
