It remained in that state for just above 20 years and was never influenced by anything French. No more than 3000 or 4000 ppl in a country of millions ever spoke that language. Hell most Syrians are ignorant of old Syriac. Don't wish to bore you or sound like a know it all, but I have in-laws from Homs. He can say what he wants but as a professed Muslim, traveling in such a country, I expect him to exercise a little knowledge. Peace.
