As an immigrant who came to US for grad school on my own, and was paid humbly during grad school, I could totally understand why he didn’t want to put his hard-earned money in the bank. After I graduated and found an industry job, I once worried about extremely unlikely things such as the bank went bankruptcy (even though I know about FDIC) or technical glitches from the bank. It’s just a sense of insecurity after long periods of stress. I think, to ease his anxiety, instead of asking him to put all the savings into one* bank, ask him to spread his money into several* different high-yield savings accounts. It would add an extra sense of security that he didn’t put all his eggs in one basket.

If the Zima plan is helping I'd want him to get a week or two's worth at a time. Cause if its helping and he shows up and they are out its a problem, and if just going to the place is more of what is making you feel better than you need to explore that. I can definitely relate to this guy in so many ways with both the financial part, and the car situation. I find myself also doing similar things with cars because I’m a car guy. And as much as i love cars, I try not to think emotionally when i purchase them. I only purchase a car when i can get it significantly cheaper and i know i will profit off of it when i sell. I purchase the car and enjoy it for a little while, fix it up a little if needed, then sell it for a profit. Most recently i was able to purchase a car worth $6,500 for only $2,600 that i am daily driving. All it needed was rear brake pads. In the last 3 years i have gotten extremely good with finding cars for way cheaper than average. Now for the final way i can relate…. I also need to learn how to use my money to make money in a high yield savings account.

People are nuts about cars. I can't help but roll my eyes whenever I hear someone say they wanted a more "reliable" car. New cars are some of the least reliable cars on the road. Look up the bathtub curve on cars. That is doubly true for any time it's a new model year or large revisions in the newest model year. I can understand why some people might want a warranty on a car. However, the amount people spend for that peace of mind is crazy. The key to being a happy car owner (assuming you don't like to wrench on it yourself) is to find a good and honest mechanic. The amount of money they can save a person is mind-blowing. It's not like cars aren't going to require work or repair. It's just a matter of how much you are going to pay and to whom. I think people forget that cheaper cars are normally also cheaper to repair. An old Toyota may not be the sexiest thing on the road but when it blows a water pump. It's only going to cost a few hundred bucks to get those repairs and that car is right back on the road. Just don't buy old luxury cars. Nothing is more expensive in this world than an old BMW with more than 100K miles on it.

I've heard that when you go to bars it's good to pay in cash because you can physically see the money leaving. Maybe that works with everything else

The way he said “taking money out to put in my cash pile” as if that was that was completely normal would have been a perfect thing for Charlie to say on Always Sunny

From someone that works in insurance, he should not be keeping that much in cash in his home. I don’t know if he’s a homeowner but I’ve seen homeowners policies cap cash coverage at $200. Meaning if he was robbed, he would only recover $200 out of the $10k.

Cash is also fun coupons for me, or as I call it “free money” 😅 I could have £500 in my wallet and I would spend that in a day without thinking, even £50 in my bank and I consider every purchase before committing

Could you add a 3rd camera that shows you both in the same shot?

This guy can knock out the emergency fund pretty quickly and after that can focus on investing. Stay away from forex, crypto, and options. Slow and steady wins the race. Time in the market beats timing the market.

The car thing sounds like my husband and I’m not showing him this to vindicate him because the junk cars drive me crazy.
