Love the video. We have two working cats. We don't own a farm, but we have a piece of land of 850 square meters on the water side close to the forest. Before we had the cats it was full of mice, moles, rats, mole rats and we even had a nest of pine martens in the shack. In winter most of the rodents would move into the house which was a nightmare especially in the cellar. After some reading and realising cats were domesticated as pest control, we decided to get some cats. Two brothers. We gave the cats a home base in the cellar of the house. It's where their seats are, and their toys. We also gave them access to the shack so they can get in by themselves. I trained them to do a morning walk each morning visiting the cellar of the shack (did it with them for weeks, now they do it without me). I taught them to come home when I whistle. Just start whistling when you give the food and eventually change the tune to something loud and they will come when you do so. I never was a cat person, I used to love dogs. But I'm blown away by how awesome these creatures are. The only rodents I see these days are ones that have been caught. No moles in the garden anymore (just rarely) and the pine martens decided to raise their children somewhere else where they don't get morning visits from cats. Fantastic animals.

Same here. I grew up on a full on hobby farm. I raised Siamese cats inside and we had a queeen ms maggie outside. One day she came back with a gunshot through her you could see right through. Experience to watch one of past litter instinctively nurse her kittens. All the videos out these days it still brings me back when I hear the wonder how free range farm cats keep warm in the winter and I kindly reply how they make nests in the hay bails. An experience I will carry with me the rest of my life like the process of chicken harvesting just a young child. I remember the day a few beef cattle got out into the corn. My dad had to put one down before time because the corn made it explode in size of gas to later find if he had knifed it the gut it would have saved it. Many stories behind one of the cleanest farms around in its time.

@David-gh6vp2 ай бұрын
This DOES depend upon the neighborhood. Cats of all kinds love freedom, and independence. If there are no predators, I do let the cat out for 4-6 hours to hunt. Mice, after all, are most active in the wee hours of the morning, maybe 2 - 5 am. Coyotes and owls are rare in the Willamette Valley, and these are the most concerning of night-time predators. Mountain lions do hunt in the day, and an eagle may carry a cat or small dog away.

Glad to see that you regularly feed your barn cats. Regularly feeding helps keep them safe. Hunger and a lack of nearby prey can lead to them foraging farther and farther out, making them vulnerable to coyotes and other predators. With a full tummy, they will still hunt, but will stay closer to home. Cats will hunt to eat, but they also hunt just because they enjoy the thrill of the chase.

Actually, a mother and her ~6-month-old kittens showed up and adopted us, especially the horses. The horses really were affected by the rodents with bites and scratches on their legs. Within a week, the mice were noticeably less. An adult Tom showed up who was friend or family, and with the mom, wiped out the rats. Currently, they have a large cat house within the stable. I adopted a stray tuxedo female 8yrs ago. She monitors our historic apartment building like a custodian! She's the expert mouser. She doesnt kill them. She holds them until I collect them. She also protects baby birds when they fall out of their nests. She alerts like a dog too. She was about 6 yrs old when she found me. You have a wonderful group of them! There names are adorable!

I could see cats being good workers because they don't just kill when they are hungry, but anytime something moves.

Cats are VERY intelligent creatures. They make entertaining housemates. Respected and secure cats have the opportunity to let their goofy out to play. I raise mine pretty much like I do my dogs. Good manners a must. They know what no means and come when called. I talk to them and they answer me. They know how loved they are and I know how lucky I am to have had such AWESOME felines in my life. Last two were siblings, Murphy and Molly. It was a privilege to be their caretakers for all those years. Beloved knuckleheads!

Those are some very nice looking cats! Healthy. Until you get several together you just don't realize how different head shape, bone structure, fur can be in cats. M&M had nearly identical markings and kinked tails. NOTHING else about them was the same. He was a love hound and she was as catty as a cat can get. She had decided as a kitten that my son was her special human. She was more strict about his bedtime than I was. 💕

Wonderful video! I grew up on a ranch in Alberta and yes we always had the Working Barn cats and then the house cats who slept in our bedrooms. You're right CATS are amazing creatures! Independent yet still Love attention and affection. They are BRILLIANT and will wait for hours to catch prey like your MAGGIE MAY was about to do. I took care of a feral colony here in Toronto and eventually domesticated 240 of them to be homed. Once we got them caught vaccinated and neutered they had a week to recover back at our place and once they came to and got use to food a bed and warm place to sleep without fear of the Coyote or owls to catch them. Only 4 choose to go back out into the wild. That was almost 20 years ago and I still have one of the 5 I kept. She looks like a Palace Cat or raccoon and was a the best Mommy cat I'd ever seen. So once I had taken all her friends she was easy to catch with a litter of 20. She has out lived the 4 kittens I had of hers. I love your Pride of Working cats and all the profiles you shared. Don't know if you already have any naturally growing on your property. But catnip is a great treat for them to have around to munch on. It's in the mint family so it grows around Southern Ontario. I have found it along the trails. I did see a slot for Catnip seeds at Canadian Tire seed display last year but it was empty. I dug up the small patch in the way of the massive construction happening in the lot near me. Thankfully it gave our Hawkeye one of Mommy cats kittens who would have been 18 last month. He got great joy out of going over to eat a few pieces of the catnip before he passed on New Year's Eve afternoon 2023. I was grateful I'd brought it home for them. He and his other siblings loved catnip. Mommy cat not at all. She is like a Margaret Thatcher type! Bwahahah.. Anyway I rattled on enough here. I really appreciate your video and did subscribe. My son sent me this video because he LOVES cats too. Hawkeye was his special buddy. We both still really miss Hawkeye our Ginger Boy! Teddy was his nickname! Okay I'm off. Looking forward to more of your Cat and Farm life videos! 🎉💞🐈 I

Cats are incredible and also misunderstood. You have no idea what a cat is until you bond with one, and the cat decides to show you who it truly is.

My cats are wonderful...all seven of them. I don't have a farm to tend, but I live on the edge of a greenbelt, so the couple that do venture outside during the day control our rats and mice. We occasionally receive gifts!

We had both a rattlesnake problem, and a stray cat problem. I had no issues with the strays. Because i knew thry were keeping the mice and snakes down. They only made a mess when people didn't close the dumpster when it got full. Feral, but appreciated.
