Also, a lot of casual players like watching and discussing competitive formats and tournament results, even if they don't play that format.

Spot on, learning about and watching pro play was a big part of what got me excited about playing magic

Havent finished (the three minute) video yet, but theres an important distinction to be made, that maro is either missing or ignoring on purpose. The distinction is between the competition level of the median player vs the median game of magic.

iirc he also said something like 40% or 35% of magic players are women, so I have no fucking clue how he's getting his numbers. Probably not even 40% of people who can identify what a magic card is are women.

i used to be a competitive player , now a hardcore edh player, but far from been casual, i buy sealed product, singles, i deck build, discuss online etc. but I've never stopped my attention from the competitive scene, at least cardboard scene i must say. so i guess i have a different perspective from what a magic player is in general and what is a casual magic player 🤔

I certainly can't speak for all the elite players that got hit by those changes, but more than 90% of my local customers are only interested in competitive 1v1 formats (Standard, modern and pioneer) even though most brazilian players only play EDH according to the community consensus. Recently it has been really hard to keep them interested in playing 1v1 due to the obvious circumstances... Considering the state of Standard and Pioneer not being supported on Arena, it feels like a victory that not a single one of our players has permanently given up. And that's the thing, I'm pretty sure most of them would rather stop playing Magic than start playing singleton. Some players would never play commander... An incomprehensible concept, huh? Jokes aside, in my opinion they should find more ways to support this segment of their customers... And by that I mean competitive players in general (differently of course).

Ironically car brands are somewhere where it seems like this actually does come up. Ford doesn’t sell cars anymore outside of the mustang imprint; they’ve entirely switched to light trucks because they’re higher margin. Maybe there’s enough brand lock in that people will be shifted to higher margin vehicles by lack of lower end options?

You change your offerings but you don't write off that entire segment very often. WotC is leaving the market for sustained elite play.

Other games now have a huge opportunity to support a competitive OP structure. I hope Flesh and Blood is the game to step up and fill that roll.

Not sure I understand the analogy. Toyota produces sports cars because there are customers willing to pay a premium to the extent that manufacturing and marketing those vehicles make economic sense. It's not clear to me that pro play generates direct revenue the way a luxury product line does; in fact, pro play requires a lot of financial support that only has indirect economic benefits. Of course I would be interested to know the concrete cost/benefit analysis of supporting pro play. It does seem like a better analogy would be Toyota dedicating considerable funds to support the Indy 500 or Le Mans or something along those lines.

isn't their a finite amount of effort Wotc can dedicate to each format. Doesn't it reach a point where effort somewhere will detract effort from somewhere else?

Yeah look at the state standard has been in because its not their many income now.

Pay people, it's not like they don't have money. Or people who know things about card design. Or about OP structures.

I honestly couldn't care less about wizards propping up a team of hand-picked individuals for a pro team and giving them salaries and bonuses. Seems silly. Especially when these individuals aren't entertainers or entertaining. They should invest their money in Entertaining people that actually bring people into the game like Mr. Beast.
