i got a 6 arm 2m howling moon 270*. love it so far, main reason for it was it has zips for walls instead of Velcro, has polls in the arms for setup and has tie down ropes in the canvas in little zipup bags. They also come in a reflective canvas to try and mitigate the oven effect you can get when the suns beating down. Also the ropes are reflective so easy to spot in the dark

I think what you were trying to think of is sail track. That’s what I’ve heard it referred too.
@stuartkcalvin4 жыл бұрын
Sail track is the metal piece, Kedder edging is on the soft piece. Keder consists of two parts: a core and fabric. The core is made from extruded PVC, or another elastic material, to allow flexibility. The core is then wrapped in Keder fabric, which has exposed fibers on the outside to allow the Keder to easily slide into the metal extrusion.
@daslaundrynazi4 жыл бұрын
@@stuartkcalvin Interesting, you're absolutely right. I always called it a sail track and rope bolt. Grew up around boats though, so knowledge is probably skewed in that direction.
@Sethjxl4 жыл бұрын
Howling Moons awning is one of the best. The way they integrate the poles and ropes resolves the water pooling issue. C channel arms also make it a bit lighter, 27kg. They also used sail track on each arm so the wind force on the canvas is spread out. Zip all the way round for walls too, stronger than velcro. Down side is the cost at 1300 starting price. Full size 6 arm with heat reflective coating and wall kit will run close to 2k... But it's well worth it.

Love the alucab products! We had the rooftop tent for a couple of years and was extremely happy with it , on that we ran a darche 180 awning so we could still access the main door in the tent. Changed to a Tommy slide on camper and we have put a howling moon 270 on it. Semi reflective so stays cooler , Integrated ropes and poles on all sides plus zip on walls (Velcro not the best long term or in wind imho but if not using walls doesn’t matter). Absolutely brilliant awning! Cheers For the vids👍🏻

That was a very well balanced and honest review. I have the Drifta 270 awning, which is made by Supa Peg in QLD. It does not setup and pack away as fast as yours, but it's still quick enough. One advantage with the Drifta awning, is it's ability to avoid pooling when it rains, as long as it's setup correctly. I'm very happy with it. The only thing I don't like about car awnings, is the fact that they need to be packed up and setup again, if you wish to drive somewhere and then return to camp again.

Got a 270 Supapeg. Love it. Awesome. Not self supporting like yours, but I’ve got the 1-man setup dialed so not really an issue. The plus for supapeg is they provide really nice tie down straps with sand screws and springs. Really good / solid in wind. (1-man setup in wind is a different story altogether! Learned that the hard way!!) nice vid btw

Previously had a Darche 270 when I had a canopy, lost the canopy on the Ute and went back to the 180 instead. Don’t really feel like I have lost all that much in doing so, it is slightly more practical, although providing less shade it leaves the rear open for access to the rooftop tent etc (mine went on a tub rack but is now being shifted to a trailer)

Agreed with the 23zero falcon awning. Huge coverage, massive mounting brackets, zips and not Velcro attachment for the walls (important for lifted trucks), super strong hinges, after sales service /staff are excellent, great price point for what you get. I’ve got the darche 270! For the money ($1050) it’s been pretty great! Only been on a handful of trips so far! But only had to peg it out once, I wouldn’t set it up without the legs, just seems like there’s too much weight up there for everything to handle! Interested to see what it’s weak points are in the future but seems to be quite a quality product!

Great review Sam. You always present so professionally I can see why people like them, but it seems like a lot of hassle and weight Add up the cost of a clamshell rtt and an awning like this. That’s a lot of occasional paid accommodation on a long road trip. And without having well over 100 kgs up high for the duration. What happened to a simple swag and a little tarp? I’ve never fallen off a swag but can imagine slipping on a dewey ladder in the middle of nowhere then hanging upside down from a ladder with a broken leg. At least the crows would find me. Good to be able to set up and then go for a bit of a drive without having to fold up your awning and rtt too. Anyway each to their own

@michaelnugara14 жыл бұрын
I had a look at this awning and wasn't that impressed when compared to the Front Runner awning which appeared much stronger and had a pole on each arm. Alucab only have one pole and from memory you have to buy more if needed. I could be wrong there. The Front Runner also had tie down points between the poles to allow for run off and the awning was fully fixed to the support arms which prevents awning flapping around. I'd like to see what your thoughts are on the FR awning. I also think the Alucab RTT is so over priced and has nothing on the Bush Company RTT which is cheaper and has a far better ladder. Thanks for the vid though.

Sam, I have a question and maybe something you can help me research.. I do not have a roof rack and do not want to put one on just for an awning, so, are there any awnings that clip onto the rain channel on the side of an 80 series or something similar that you do NOT need a roof rack for .... ???? I have not seen anything out there ... they are all devised to fit onto a roof rack or something that is already fitted to the roof etc. The word you were looking for is Sail Track or Sail Channel.

We love the look of these big awnings but over here 20-30kph winds are so common, I worry that the whole thing would end up on the other side of the car. We went with a small side awning combined with a sealed annexe that gives us somewhere to sleep and somewhere to get away from flies and mozzies if we need to. I think the biggest downside to the big awnings is not having some sealed off area where you can get away from insects.
