Very nice. Thank you. I have a follow up question. Suppose (for 3d printing purposes) I wanted to create a dome with a skin thickness of 2 millimeters. Do you have a simple method of doing that? I've been using offset -> 2mm inward on a quarter circle, highlighting the face in between, then Follow Me around the guiding circle with that face. Is there a better way? Maybe creating a dome first, then copying it, and sizing the second one down and inward. Actually, this sounds like a good idea for a plugin... a tool that creates an inward skin of a user-desired thickness for any solid. Your videos are great.

As a 3D newbie I'm enjoying your thorough video lessons. I've taken your extensions suggestions videos as a shopping list of what I should download. How might you suggest blending a flat surface to a dome surface like in the case of a spoon? I tried Fredo RoundCorner but didn't get close to what I expected/wanted.
@Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials 6 жыл бұрын
For that shape specifically, you might want a process closer to the one in this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5SyhZaDr9yJaNE - unfortunately, RoundCorner was what I was going to recommend :(

Thanks for the link. I'm not after a regular spoon but a measuring spoon. I'm shooting for about a 1/4 teaspoon for my wife's tea. Another problem I'm facing, and this one is more frustrating, is when I go to the 3D slicer my open areas get closed in. For example, somehow the dome I made is closed over (but still hollow). I wish I knew what I was doing to make this happen. It's frustrating to have something look right in Sketchup and then wrong when getting ready to print 3D.

I'm having a lot of problems getting the "Follow Me" tool to work - I follow your instructions, but both shapes simply vanish without creating the intended obejct.

In my experience, the Follow Me tool seems *very* finicky, but I admit that it could simply be user error on my behalf. I hope you managed to get yours sorted!

With the circle tool... how many sides does it allow you to generate? I'm trying to design a large ring, where the sides are noticeable. I don't want a ring that's made up of just a handful of sides. The whole idea is to create a torus that's smooth, when pulled/extruded. Smooth as a pipe. Can this program handle that?

Justin, great video once again. I'm starting to make some basic things but I have trouble figuring out where to start or how to dissect an object to starting modelling it. I would love to see some videos on how you approach starting a new 3d model. Do you start with the general shape and then add details or just add all details as you go?
@Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric - it really depends on what I'm creating. If I'm creating something like a house or a building, generally speaking I can use the same workflow every time. If I'm modeling something more complex, often I try to figure out a way to create the general shape first, then I look more at the details. The other thing I always ask myself is if I really NEED a lot of details. Generally speaking the best workflow is to try to model only as much as you need, no more. There's no point to modeling things that you won't even be able to see. Does that make sense?
@ericlyons11
@ericlyons11 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'm creating models for 3d Printing so they are smaller types of objects with curves and details. For example, let's say I was modeling reading glasses. Seems simple enough until you really notice the curves in all directions for an actual model that you wanted to print or use in the real world. You don't have to help with that specifically, I was mainly just making a suggestion on a different type of tutorial video instead of mainly plugins. I love the plugin videos and now use a lot that you've mention. I'm just trying to get a littler better at putting it all together.

Thank you very much! I'm still using Sketchup 2013 so I really need to upgrade to the newer version because I'm not sure if I can do all of this, but I will try. I'm trying to make a euro-style vanity that has a sort of oval bowl with the inner part sort of flat at the very back so it is different types of shapes and the bowl is part of the countertop, which has curved edges. Thus far it is proving to be a royal pain. I really have a hard time getting my objects to line up with one another-- it keeps wanting to create them far apart and I have trouble moving them in the direction I want. I've tried using the arrow keys but that doesn't seem to work. Looks like I really need to upgrade though. This is extremely helpful for when I do upgrade.

You make it look so easy.... I've been trying to make a dome for my project. Only need it to be about 3mm diameter, nothing special, but I'm following along in Sketchup Free originally with no issue, but it completely breaks (what it makes is certainly not a dome, it just erases a lot of stuff or makes fragments) when I start to use the follow me tool. Is there much of a difference with the versions?
@Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials 4 жыл бұрын
It's too small - model the object you want to extrude at your 3mm scale, then scale it up 10x. Then run the follow me tool to create the dome, then scale it back down by 10. SketchUp gets kind of weird with really small or really big shapes

@@Thesketchupessentials Cheers, that worked like a charm. I'll bare that in mind. Working on small 3d printed objects for electronic applications, some of the stuff I deal with is tiny, good to know how Sketchup will behave with it! :p

A notation to what i wrote a few days back, this hole in the sphere seems to come only when its small spheres, if i make em like cannonball size its no problem, but when there like a few mm or so, then there they are, why is that???

first of, thanks for a great video. i get great progres following your vids, however i ran in to some strange thing, im making a sphere in different way, but always end up with a hole in each pole on the sphere, great if that is what one wants, not so mutch if you dont, so what could it be that im doing wrong? im guessing its a setting somewhere, but i have no clue... help please

draw it under bigger measurements then just scale it back down. your processor might not be able to compute that well which results in some geometries not existing

dear Justin, thanks for reply, I mean how can I make cylinder or twisted shapes with brick surface? the blugin (FloorGenerator) do not work good on cylinder or twisted shape it is work just on flat surface, I am beginner in Sketchup, it is important to make brick ornament on complex surface, I try to use image on surface but it is not good for my work. with all good wishes

What is the application that you're trying to create this for? Creating something like that might get tricky - generally speaking you don't model the actual individual bricks on geometry like that. You might be able to achieve that effect with some kind of bump map in a rendering program...
