I spied a spice finch (aka munia) eating at one of our bird feeders while sitting outside this afternoon, and the lighting was too good to resist. These birds are not native to North America, having been brought here by the pet trade from Southeast Asia. As often happens, individuals that have escaped over the years have found some parts of the country habitable, and we have a population here in Southern California. The afternoon sunlight really brings out their coppery brown backs and cinnamon hoods.
