You’re so right about giving up on animal lives. I had a kitten that was FIV positive and basically had sinus infections most of her kitten hood. The vet told me she wouldn’t recover and would have a bad quality of life. I got so mad and didn’t listen. Basically she was full of shit. She needed breathing treatments and I walked her ass to the vet twice a week for that for weeks. She mad a full recovery and lived a long healthy happy life.

@A P I was vegan my senior year of high school and then until I was about 23 and it just became a hassle for me when my husband and family are all meat eaters. I still enjoy vegan dishes and I tend to only eat fish or steak. I even cook some vegan side dishes for my family. I’ve managed that much out of them and got them to stop drinking milk. It’s a slow process but eventually I hope they will all convert and make my life easier. But my husband is the worst and he grew up hunting and fishing so he doesn’t see why it’s wrong. My whole life I was never a big fan of meat to begin with I always preferred my vegetables. When my babies are older and understand better I hope they will chose to be vegan as well. Before I’m 30 I plan to be full on vegan again and my family will just have to cook for themselves. But for now I’m not vegan.

about the whole "is it moral or not to have kids" i think that if you choose to bring a child to life, you're responsible for giving them the opportunity to be happy, cared for, and to exist for themself, not as a "ooh i must have kids", "my marriage is dead let's have a child yayyy" which sadly happens a lot. Hopefully that'll change soon

The veterinary give us special food & pills. They had hydrated him. I said he will us know when he's ready we don't do that to humans. When he stopped eating & couldn't walk up the stairs we knew it's was time. He cuddle up to each one of us & pass the Tuesday after mother's day 5 yrs ago 💔

So the philosophy of it being wrong to have children is often called anti-natalism and one of the big issues is the lack of consent. Often times parents bring children into the world because of their desires to be parents, and children are unable to consent to being born or fulfilling that role for their parent. I am moderately anti-natalist myself. For me, what improves the ethics of childbearing are two ideas. TW for suicide. The first is that the child is able to have autonomy and input into their relationship with their parent and who they want to be as a person. I am not talking about ice cream for breakfast, but for the parent to limit their expectations for their child and what kind of relationship they will have. If you have a child wanting them to worship you, and to grow up and follow in your footsteps in terms of values and possibly lifestyle/career, you are fulfilling your own desire and using your child to do that. Parenting should be about the child's fulfillment as well, because that child never agreed to play a certain role in your life. The second, and this is controversial, is the right to suicide. I also believe it is so so so important to prevent suicide by having a just, equitable, and caring society, but purely on an ethical level I think it is immoral to bear children without their consent and then, once they are capable of retroactively consenting, removing their ability to deny further consent to be alive. This is not promoting suicide because I think we can create a world where the vast majority of people are happy to be born and capable of flourishing. I hope that makes sense!
@CheapLazyVegan
@CheapLazyVegan 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the insight!! Totally makes sense everything you're saying and I can't say that I disagree. I always thought anti-natalism was simply about the concept of how human beings are bad for the environment but I guess it's a lot deeper than that. It is true that we often birth children for the sake of wanting a child and then expect them to be x y and z. and society often doesn't care for the human beings that are alive but condemns suicide. SO interesting! Thank you for sharing.

Unfortunately, I know with stray cats, it's really difficult situation because the overpopulation is insane. Although it is preferable to bring a stray to a cat rescue as first resort if possible, then a regular shelter, than a veterinarian bc the vet will need payment for care. But even animal shelters cant take them all in. I had the horrible experience of having to bring 4 really young stray kittens who had ringworm to a humane society and they had to be euthanized. It broke my heart and I was shocked. It was traumatic experience actually, wanting to save them but not being able to, especially with the costly health condition. Shelters are overrun and don't have the funding to save every one. It is sooooo sad and it's the same with dogs. The problem is overpopulation and people not spaying and neutering their pets and feral cat communitities. It is never a priority in local government and it should be part of good community protocols. Otherwise shelters will be overrun. There just aren't enough fosters and funding out there .

So, for me personally, having mental illness most of my life and suffering a lot from it, sometimes hearing things that equate life to suffering make that suicidal part of my brain light up like 'see we told told you, life is terrible and you are terrible too. There is no point.' But I am used to refuting that part of myself at this point as long as I am not too ill. Life is a lot more than suffering even when you're forced to experience anguish constantly. Seeking out purposes and dedicating myself to things and other people does make me feel all of the pain is worth it. (even tiny ones like the neighbours dog loves my head pats) (Again as long as I am well enough to be rational, to be myself) When I was still very young(13) I remember having such a negative outlook on life because everyone around me seemed happy, and even when I tried I could not maintain any lasting happiness. It seemed like the point of everyones life was to be happy and that further alienated me and also really let that suicidal part of my brain take over. I was reading Emerson when this quote really struck a cord with me “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” Even though I could not control how I felt I can still live a fulfilling life. In a way a round about way stoping the focus on being happy made me a little happier. I am pro Euthanasia of course, when people are terminally ill it is a kindness. Just to clarify. I also think many things that cause human suffering are systemic and that we can build a better future together.

@@CheapLazyVegan I believe in that position (antinatalism). The position is that if a being misses out on potential happiness in life, that won’t affect it (as it doesn’t even exist yet) but if you bring it into existence, it will inevitably suffer and that weighs heavier than the “missing out” on potential happiness. I hope that made sense 🙂

When I was younger, our neighbor had a dog ( a pit bull which makes it so much worse bc people say all pits are mean and they’re NOT it’s how they’re raised, any dog can be aggressive ) and our neighbor was friends with my dad so one day I was at their house. Sadly the people were mean to their dog, so one day the dog had like something in his eye and I was literally 5 so I tried to get it out and the dog attacked me, I have a huge scar on my cheek from it. They put the dog down and to this day I feel SO bad because it really was my fault. I begged and cried for them to not do it, but they wouldn’t listen. For some reason hearing about this story it brings up memories and my heart is broken all over again. Animals deserve so much better then us humans. 😔

For context for anyone who didn’t watch Nikki’s video: Their dog was always shown as very loving and gentle. They said that their dog got attacked as a puppy and after that, it occasionally showed signs of aggression around other dogs that snapped at it (makes sense). Nikki admitted that her son had been pulling at the dogs ears and getting in its face. She said the dog tolerated it many times and then snapped back once so they put the dog down after owning it for 9-10 years. In my opinion, Nikki is a stay at home mother and so is her husband so they should have been teaching their child how not to use animals as toys, respecting the animal, and also helping the dog feel safe around potential threats. It’s just like PTSD, imagine getting attacked in the face and then years later someone is repeatedly hitting you in the face, it’s going to be scary and you will try to defend yourself.

We unfortunately had to euthanize one of our dogs. I was about 16-17 at the time. Our dog got out of the gate and we had a 3 day search party looking for her. Someone finally found her and returned her to us but she was bleeding on her face. It looked like she got into a fight with another animal. We took her to the vet and they cleaned her up and we took her home. Within a few days, she began having seizures and completely stopped eating. She would just pee and poop wherever she was laying down. Her seizures started getting worse by the next day. We took her back to the vet and they said she had distemper. There was (not sure if there is now, this was 20 years ago) no cure for this disease. We didn’t want to euthanize her so we took her home and have her so much love. The seizures were then happening so close together, she was losing so much weight, and hair started to fall out in patches. She was crying all day. We made the decision to euthanize bc we didn’t want her to live for the next few days in such pain. It was the hardest decision to make but I think we made the right one for her. I couldn’t imagine taking that decision so lightly without trying to do something to help an animal, the way they did.

I work in the veterinary field and yes it is SO common. It’s also not illegal for an owner to come in and just say “I want to euthanize my (perfectly healthy, no issues, I just don’t want it anymore, I’m moving, we have kids, I don’t have time to train/troubleshoot their behavior/medical issues) pet”. They have the “right” to do it. We also have the right to refuse it, but they will (more than likely) be able to find a vet who will. Thankfully I work with veterinarians who refuse, and we also try to give loads of resources and if all else fails, they can surrender the pet to us, and we’ll call one of the MANY rescue groups we work with.

And I am not talking about the vegans who blow up on people over their dietary choices or eating meat near them or people “like Freelee” but people who meaningfully try to bring attention to the immoralities of the animal product industries & bring attention to the fact that cows & pigs are aware sentient beings, the fact that baby male chicks are murdered simply as a byproduct of the egg industry, and the devastation that the fishing industry is causing for our sea animals!

That school of thought is probably antinatalism :D I consider myself one. Basically, the logic is, everyone in their life will experience varying levels of suffering and ultimately die - that is the only thing we can guarantee for any one being born. Therefore creating more beings capable of suffering just because we want to is immoral. If I had a second just to exist before being born and comprehend everything about the world I'm about to be created in - I would choose not to be born. But now I'm here I need to work on being as happy as I can in my little bubble because death itself is petrifying, yet I won't be able to escape it.

By saying this, I really hope you do realize that you will have to live a very perfect life, without inflicting suffering on other beings, to actually call people that want children inmoral. You are also giving your children many other things and if you're a parent then you know the one thing you don't want your child to experience is suffering. And even then, suffering makes people empathetic, which in turn makes them better humans. I suffered allot in my life, and it only has made me more grateful for what I do have, and humble and generous with everything that I have. I would really encourage you to be very critical of your "school of thought"

@@4usister Yes, I absolutely disagree with causing suffering unnecessarily. Parents usually don't want their children to suffer but that doesn't mean that you can prevent it and as I said everyone will experience dying. Non-existence is at least neutral. I very much understand that this is a fringe philosophy but at least it takes the focus away from the parents' ego trip onto the potential child.

I strongly agree with the philosophy you shared at the end! I have suffered from depression for most of my life and endured abuse as a child; I felt so much anger towards being forced to be in this world. I think that it is an incredibly huge responsibility to bring a child into this world and if people cannot afford to take proper care or are not mentally stable enough to care for a baby and especially able to guide them through life then they should not have them. Because of this, people are forced to endure abuse and or forced to be stuck in a cycle of poverty etc. I could never understand how you can be forced into this world, into a situation that you have no control over then be told that it is illegal to end your own life. Humans value human life but aren't even close to UNDERSTANDING what makes it valuable.

It's sort of one of the arguments about not wanting children, because some people just want children not because they like children, or they think their life won't be fulfilled otherwise, but there are those that want "to leave a part of them behind" or "leave a legacy behind" or even want children so that they should carry on their business. I get so angry at people and vets who put down healthy animals. We had to put down our dog in 2018 because he was terminally ill, we had tried to fight for little over a year with medicine, diets and so on. But the last week he was weak and not happy and having trouble breathing... then we knew it was time. The most heartbreaking decision I've had to make, but now I'm happy I did it and didn't keep him alive a little while longer just for our sake. He was ready to go

Having babies is not immoral but having babies when you can’t give them a good life is immoral. That’s like extreme version of consent. Life in general is a gift including the good and bad. We need new people to continue the human species but it betters society to have well raised kids.

I thought a lot about the idea of giving birth, and the moral aspects of creating a new human life, even apart from environmental and state-of-the-world aspects. I think the morality of the act in itself is hard to discuss, as we were all born, and I think most of us are kinda grateful to be alive . My conclusion (for now) is that giving birth isn't immoral unless you know you absolutely can't provide a good enough life and upbringing to the kid (and had a way to prevent or terminate the pregnancy). What I consider immoral is expecting your child to be grateful to you for giving them life, and treating them like they owe you. Then, I also believe people should be given the possibility to end their life when it becomes insufferable (obviously lines need to be drawn to protect people whose consent can't be expressed, and also to protect the conscience and define the responsibility of those who may assist in cases of euthanasia / medically assisted suicide, for example)

I agree that a parent should never expect their child to be grateful for giving them life! And I actually think that people should be allowed to end their lives whenever they see fit. No one else should be able to control that or be able to determine what is and is not sufferable.

@@vistaoalry4883 I agree with you : my stance on controlling the circumstances is more meant to protect the people who assist in the death, when assistance is needed. I think that for them, having guidelines can be very useful.

I agree with the philosophy that it’s immoral to make a child. Especially because most parents are inherently abusive. I have seen one family model my entire life where my friend was happy and had a positive relationship with her parents and siblings and the rest of her family. For me, coming from generations of abuse, it was very unusual and difficult to understand. For heterosexual couples, it’s so easy to have kids. There isn’t a single hoop they have to go through to have a child if both parents are fertile. And in my opinion most people aren’t prepared for that responsibility. We need better child care education for everyone, not just the people that can afford optional baby classes. Make it mandatory in schools. Learn about psychology, and what needs a child has in their earliest and most important stages of development. So much human suffering stems from lack of care as a baby because it leads to trauma as an adult. That’s my take on it anyways.

kinda unrelated but it boils my blood that some people get pets without putting in mind that they need vet visits, physical care and mental care too. and once they realize that they're breathing beings and not a home decor they throw them on the streets while also REFUSING to neutre/spay them only for their next generations to have hard lives on the streets and keep the cycle going :(

I work in a vets in the UK and I can guarantee we do not ever put an animal to sleep willy nilly, at least not in my region. We keep sick strays and treat them with returned stock if needed until we can get them rescue space. We have had pets signed over to us for whatever reason because owners have wanted to put to sleep but we didn't agree and we treat them as necessary for their condition and help find them homes. I obviously can't speak for the vets you were using with the kitty but most veterinary practices I've worked in would not have put her to sleep unless she was actually really sick =( which is really sad but the only time we wouldn't try is if its just prolonging their suffering and unfortunately animals are incredibly good at hiding their pain, especially cats. I hope this information helps hun I love your videos ❤

Not all human life is cherished. I think it's hypocritical of people to freak out over euthanizing a dog or cat but not bat an eyelash over abortion...over having aborted babies in certain vaccines. You can't tell me babies don't feel pain in the womb. There have been surgeons that have done surgeries on unborn babies and they've said the baby definitely feels pain. I don't agree that animals are put down for silly reasons either. It only should be if the animal is suffering in pain and terminal anyway. As for the school of thought that someone is forced to be born because they didn't choose to be...I think it's ridiculous. How can they make a choice if they don't exist yet? Even if they could make a choice after conception, how would it make its choice known? And if it's immoral, what standard of morals are they going by? So many view issues of morality differently. I swear, the world is getting weirder and weirder every year.

I agree that animal lives should be given more value than they are given now. Also I feel like human lives should be given less importance, because we aren't contributing to the betterment of the environment, unlike the animals. Nature needs animals more than it needs humans. I feel like the deciding factor of weather someone should live or die should be based on how much they contribute POSITIVELY to the environment.

Moneyyyyyy Rose! With healthcare insurance for animals, (if the owner wants to invest in it in the beginning), there will be way less euthanasia for expensive procedures! Also, because you didn't choose to live, you get to do the most good you can do, but in the end, it is not your 'fault' that the world is such a difficult place. I really believe that, and it is way less stressful. Ecoanxiety specifically.

19:40 The philosophical idea about people having kids being immoral because it’s like choosing them to exist and now they have to suffer. I think that philosophy is touching on the fact that choosing to have children requires a moral obligation to ensure that a child will have access to resources for survival and that the parent fulfills the duty of preparing them for the world by raising them humanely, considering their mental health as well. But in reality, most people just have kids nilly willy without taking it as a serious life commitment choice and it results with many children dealing with neglect, abuse and abandonment. Which is why it can be immoral to have children, if one isn’t truly going to care for the well-being of the child and take their parent job seriously.

Problems lie in our attempts to fit the world to the reality our thoughts project on the screen of consciousness, without realising that thought are not independent, like waves have no independent existence from ocean. It's just a structure that comes and goes. Our thoughts are informed by the memory and what is memory but a residue of the past, dead and gone but thought sustains the past and use this memory to project a future. So future has the seeds of the past, and hence the outcrop of so many divisions that this otherwise beautiful world is rife with. You cannot sink your teeth in the flowing water but thought arrests the flow and turn that into an icicle - leaving us numb and paralyzed, desensitized to the suffering of innocent creatures.

Haven't caught one of these in a while. But DAMN that all looked great. And no worries about the depressing topics. It's real life, and if it's what's on your mind, most of us wanna hear it. The part at the end about having kids being cruel because you're just creating life that will ultimately suffer made me lol for some sick reason. 🤣 Like I guess?? But that's the ultimate nihilistic pessimist way to look at life to the point where I find it comical. Whomever came up with that needs to spark a j and eat a taco. Life is beautiful sometimes and that's good enough for me.

20:15 I kinda understand it bc I believe having children is an animalistic instict and is inherently selfish. We are evolved enough to know better about eating animals and everything else. We should also know and understand that the urge to procreate is an animalistic urge and actually put some thought into WHY you want to. Can almost guarantee it is for selfish reasons. "Who's going to take care of me when I'm old...what will I do when I'm old" etc. is a very common excuse I've heard. So I understand the argument of it being immoral even to inflict it upon something that didnt choose to live in this f*d up world for your selfish reasons.

I have never heard of H mart! Going there tomorrow now, must try those deep fried seaweed rolls. Side note: I worked as a vet assistant, and there are shitty veterinarians out there for sure. But wow, there are many that care about animals soooo very much and are very passionate about their work and empathetic to their clients and patients. And that have very strict policies and procedures in place for every euthanasia, at least at our clinic, they were always made a very big deal. I wish it was the norm, but just like doctors, a few visits to different ones to find a good one is worth it, especially for our fur babies!
