I love that your recipe is so simple and do-able.. i get so nervous wanting to make korean dishes because many other creators add in so many ingredients i cant find near me and i just say "forget it" but yours are so simple and give me hope. I will be trying this crab recipe very soon 🥰

I remember eating this at a restaurant in Seoul when I was stationed there in the early to mid-80's. It was really delicious, especially served with a glass of ice cold soju.

I just had my first raw crab in a korean restaurant in Singapore. It was delicious! They made it without chili flakes though

From 1971 to 2011 I lived 15 years in Korea. I always made note of restaurants thst had this spicey crab side dish.....my favorite. Sometimes our office would have lunches or afterhour dinners. I would recommend these same restaurants because I knew some of my coworkers didn't trust this dish......GOOD, PASS IT ME.

In my country,if a crab isn't alive when you buy it,it isn't fresh. Those crabs are so nice and fat! I love yangnyeom chicken so I'll try this gejang. I love to cook Singaporean chili crab. BTW Maangchi, love the red lipstick! 🥰

Same in Korea! Once seafood is dead, its price drops immensely because it's deemed not fresh.

I used to think the same until I really saw how inhumane it was eating live animals and boiling them alive, but I will say fresh does taste better

I’m making you recipe now, I’m making it with live blue crab. Unfortunately, I didn’t leave the crab in the freezer long enough so I had to refreeze them. I’m super excited to try the dish tomorrow. I've gone through the trouble of removing all of the meat from the shell and marinating it that way to make it more approachable to first timers, but removing all the meat is *extremely* tedious and daunting. Now I just make sure they know well ahead of time its a messy dish to eat and serve it in the shell the classic way

My first time eating out with a bunch of Koreans in Korea was at a seafood place in Yeosu, and marinated raw crap was served. I must admit I was weirded out by it. I tried it, not bad, though I wasn't fond of the texture. But when I told my friends and family here in France about it they were super weirded out, and I'm like, seriously!!! hahhahaha, because French people eat some weird shit sometimes, lol. The next time I had crap in Korea was in Pohang right on the sea, and it was cooked and while it was good, the best was at the end when the cooks took all the leftover bodies of the craps and mixed the insides with rice and seasoning and cooked it, oh man was that good

Hi Maangchi, thank you so much for posting this recipe! My husband and I both love yangnyum gejang so much and have always been intimidated to make it ourselves, but you make it look so easy! The most delicious gejang we ever had was at Kkottol Gejang 1beonga in your beautiful home town of Yeosu. We experienced the best food there! Gejang is also one of my mom’s favorite foods, but she doesn’t eat it as often after her dentist reprimanded her for chipping her tooth on one. 😆 She told me that Koreans prefer to make soy gejang with female crabs because you get more of a “pure” flavor with the roe, whereas male crabs are generally used for yangnyum gejang. I’m not sure if that’s true, but I did notice more crabs with roe in the soy marinated version. Either way, thank you for another amazing video. I hope your family realizes how incredibly lucky they are to have you! We all are! 😊❤

Catching female crabs is outlawed in Korea to let the species reproduce sustainably, so we've always had male crabs. Wonder if female crabs do have a difference 👀

@@제정은-f7j That’s interesting and good to know (and yes, much better for sustainability). There were markets and restaurants serving female crabs in Seoul and along the southern coast when we visited last year, so they must’ve been doing so illegally. 😬 Thanks for the info!

Ok Maangchi I just ordered 12 jumbo live blue crabs (very expensive) but this looks like it will be worth it and it is so easy! I am nervous to work with the crabs but I will be ok because I will follow your video recipe ❤ can I use rice syrup instead of sugar or should I just stick with granulated sugar?

The marinade is similar to ganjang-gejang. Just replace the crab with prawns. Make sure they're VERY fresh!

I forgot to add - remember to drain and boil the brine the day after marinating. Let it cool thoroughly and pour it back on top of the prawns. This step is to kill any remaining bacteria.

when I stayed with a homestay family in korea, they took me to a restaurant and had me try this without telling me what it was first. they were whispering to each other suspiciously but I ate it and to their surprise, I did not freak out after they told me it was raw crab. they stared at me blankly because it was supposed to be a little prank. joke's on them, though. I loved it! they were so sweet

I have found ONE Asian market since finding your channel in 2015. I am really saddened that the owners don’t make the soy sauce crab and shrimp and red sauce crab and shrimp. Or even home made kimchi. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

may i know why do you wash the head and crabs after cutting? wont the flavor and juice be wasted? can u clean and wash b4 cutting?

Of course, at first, I wash the crab with a kitchen brush, but after removing the shell, I also need to remove the gills and other dirty, muddy substances near the gills. I rinse them off under running water.
